Nezha

The Third-Headed Prince of Heaven โ€” Born from a Lotus, Reborn for Battle

He was born in blood and fire. He came into the world already knowing that he was destined for greatness. He challenged the dragon kings of the Eastern Sea, fought his own father, and refused to bow to any authority โ€” not even the Jade Emperor himself.

He is Nezha โ€” and his story is one of the most dramatic in all of Chinese mythology.

The Birth of Nezha

Nezha's story begins before his birth โ€” with his mother, Lady Yin, who was pregnant for three years without giving birth. When she finally delivered, it was not a normal child that emerged โ€” it was a ball of flesh, aใ€่‚‰็ƒ โ€” that rolled on the floor like a sphere of light.

The father, Li Jing โ€” the Pagoda-Bearer, a general in the celestial army โ€” thought the ball was a demon and drew his sword to cut it. But the๏ผŒ่‚‰็ƒ split open, and from it emerged a boy โ€” beautiful, powerful, already equipped with divine weapons.

The boy was named Nezha โ€” "the third-born prince" โ€” and from the moment he drew his first breath, he was extraordinary.

"Theใ€่‚‰็ƒ split like the sky splitting open at dawn. And from the darkness inside, a child stepped out โ€” not crying, not afraid, but laughing. He looked at his father with eyes that held no child in them โ€” only fire."

The Rebellion Against the Dragon King

Nezha's first great adventure happened when he was only seven years old. He went to the Eastern Sea to bathe, and the Dragon King of the East โ€” Ao Guang โ€” was so offended by this mortal child swimming in his waters that he demanded Nezha be captured.

Nezha did not wait to be captured. He fought โ€” and he won. He used his Cosmic Ring (ไนพๅคๅœˆ) to strike the dragon prince so hard that the dragon had to flee. He tied the dragon's spine with his Red Silk (ๆททๅคฉ็ปซ), and dragged him back to the mortal shore like a catch of fish.

The Dragon King was furious โ€” but Nezha was unafraid. "I am Nezha," he said. "If your dragon comes to my waters again, I will cook him for dinner."

The Battle with His Father

The most famous story of Nezha's youth is his battle with his own father, Li Jing. When Nezha's misbehavior was reported to Li Jing, the father came to discipline his son. Nezha โ€” who had never learned to bow to anyone โ€” refused to submit.

Li Jing raised his sword to strike. Nezha responded by transforming into his battle form โ€” three heads and six arms โ€” and raised his own weapons. Father and son fought, and Nezha was so powerful that Li Jing was forced to retreat.

โ˜ฏ๏ธ The Cosmic Ring (ไนพๅคๅœˆ)

Nezha's primary weapon โ€” a golden ring that can shrink and expand at will, strike with the force of a star, and pierce through any armor. It was given to him at birth by a celestial protector, and it has never failed him in battle.

๐Ÿ”ด The Red Silk (ๆททๅคฉ็ปซ)

A flowing ribbon of red that can bind any enemy, no matter how large or powerful. Nezha uses it to trap opponents, drag them across the battlefield, and wrap around enemies so they cannot escape.

Nezha in Journey to the West

When the celestial army needed to capture Sun Wukong, Nezha was called โ€” not by the Jade Emperor, but by his father Li Jing, who had joined the effort. Together, father and son descended upon the Flower-Fruit Mountain to face the Monkey King.

But Nezha was not prepared for what he found. Sun Wukong was not like the demons he had faced before. He was faster, stronger, more unpredictable. Nezha used his wind fire wheels to spin across the battlefield, his cosmos ring circling like a wheel of death, his red silk trying to bind the monkey โ€” but nothing worked.

"My ring has pierced the armor of dragon kings. My silk has bound demons that could swallow mountains. But when I throw them at the monkey โ€” he catches them with his hand, laughs, and throws them back at me. What manner of creature is this?"
โ€” Nezha, after his first failed attempt to capture Sun Wukong

Nezha's battle with Sun Wukong was ultimately inconclusive โ€” the Monkey King escaped, and Nezha returned to Heaven without his prize. But the encounter established Nezha as one of the few beings in all of mythology who could fight the Monkey King to a draw.

The Lotus Prince

After his battle with Sun Wukong, Nezha became a permanent fixture in the celestial army โ€” one of the most trusted warriors of the Jade Emperor, called upon whenever demons threatened the cosmic order. He was given the title Third-Headed Prince not because he literally had three heads โ€” but because he was considered the third most powerful figure in the celestial hierarchy, after the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother.

He is young, fierce, and unbowed โ€” the eternal adolescent of the celestial court, forever challenging authority, forever proving himself. And in this, he is remarkably similar to Sun Wukong โ€” two rebels who happened to end up on opposite sides of the same story.

"Nezha and Sun Wukong are two sides of the same coin: both powerful, both rebellious, both refusing to accept the world as it is. The difference is that Nezha chose to serve Heaven, while Sun Wukong chose to defy it. But in their hearts, they understand each other โ€” because they recognize themselves."
