Chapter 63: Shen Gongbao Persuades Yin Jiao to Rebel
The poem says: Gong Bao cherished a most wicked heart; two sons of King Zhou perished on the battlefield. In the beginning, it was he who caused Yin Hong to rebel; today, he still causes the Tai Sui to perish. Long tongue incites trouble and accomplishes nothing; sly words invite disaster—what rush is there? Although Heaven's will should be so, why must one go to such lengths to speak of trivialities!
It is said that Yiyi Xian rolled on the ground, crying out, "This pain kills me!" The Daoist rose and slowly walked up to him, asking, "You had just gone to take a vegetarian meal. Why are you like this?" Da Peng replied, "I ate some noodles and pastries, and my stomach hurts." The Daoist said, "Since you can't digest it, just vomit it out." Da Peng, taking it seriously, went to vomit. Unconsciously, he vomited something out the size of an egg, white and shiny, continuous like a silver chain that locked Da Peng's heart and liver. Da Peng felt strange; when he tried to pull it out, it caused him chest pain. Da Peng was greatly frightened and realized it was bad news. He wanted to turn around, but just then the Daoist wiped his face and shouted loudly, "I'll deal with you this cursed wretch! Do you recognize me?" -- This Daoist was none other than Rendeng Daoren of Yuanjue Dong on Lingjiu Mountain. -- The Daoist scolded, "You cursed wretch! Jiang Ziya has been entrusted by the Yu Xu Fu Ming to support the holy sovereign, quell disasters and chaos, rescue those in distress from drowning or fire, and punish the guilty while comforting the people. Why have you turned your wolfish heart against him, even wanting to devour me?" You are aiding evil and committing cruelty!" He ordered the Huangjin Lishi: "Hang this cursed wretch on a large pine tree. Wait until Jiang Ziya defeats Zhou, and then it will not be too late to release him!" Da Peng hurriedly pleaded in sorrow: "Master, please show great compassion and forgive your disciple! Disciple was momentarily foolish and was incited by others; From now on, I know my mistake and will never again dare to look at Xiqi with a direct gaze." Rendeng said, "You attained the Dao in the time of Tianhuang. How could you not know your great destiny and not recognize truth from falsehood, yet still listen to others' incitement? Your guilt is indeed despicable and cannot be forgiven!" Da Peng pleaded repeatedly, saying, "Pity my thousand years of effort. I beg you, Master, to show mercy!" Rendeng said, "Since you are willing to abandon evil and return to the right path, you must take me as your teacher. Only then will I release you." Da Peng hurriedly and eagerly exclaimed, "I wish to take you as my master, Master, and cultivate toward the true fruit." Rendeng said, "Since it is so, I shall release you." With a hand gesture, he pointed, and the hundred and eight prayer beads returned to his abdomen as before. Da Peng then followed Rendeng Dao Ren to Lingjiu Mountain for cultivation. No further mention is made of this.
The narrative now splits into two parts. Let us speak of Guangchengzi of Taoyuan Dong on Jiuxian Mountain, who had violated the precept against killing and thus remained in his cave meditating in silence, preserving harmony with Heaven, and paying no attention to external affairs. Suddenly, a white crane child Daoist came bearing the Yu Xu Fu Ming and said, "Zi Ya will soon be enfeoffed as general at Jintai. The master has ordered all disciples to go to Xiqi Mountain for a farewell banquet before his eastern expedition." Guangchengzi thanked him and sent the white crane child back to Yu Xu. The Daoist happened to think of Yin Jiao: "Now that Zi Ya is marching east, I should send Yin Jiao down the mountain to assist Zi Ya in advancing through the five eastern passes. First, this will allow him to see his ancestral homeland again; second, it will enable him to capture Daji and avenge his mother's deep murder." He hurriedly asked, "Where is Yin Jiao?" Yin Jiao had been listening for his master's call at the back of the hall and hurried to the front hall, where he bowed before his master. Guangchengzi said, "Now King Wu is marching east and the feudal lords of all under Heaven have gathered at Mengjin to jointly attack the tyrant. This is precisely the day for you to avenge yourself and vent your hatred." I am now sending you ahead to assist Zhou's forces as vanguard. Will you go?" After hearing this, Yin Jiao said respectfully to his master, "Although I am the son of King Zhou, I have been an enemy of Daji all along. My father king, however, believed the villain's words and executed my wife and killed me. My mother died innocently; this hatred has always been in my heart, constantly on my mind, never to be forgotten. Today, Master shows great compassion and sends me off; how could I dare not go in order to repay your kindness and serve with all my might? This is the true emptiness born between Heaven and Earth." Guangchengzi said, "Go to the Lion Cliff outside Taoyuan Dong and find your weapons there. I will pass on some Daoist techniques to you so that you may descend the mountain properly." Yin Jiao, upon hearing this, hurried out of the cave toward Lion Cliff in search of weapons. He saw a cave on the other side of White Stone Bridge. How is this described? The "Xijiang Yue" verse attests to it: The gate rests beneath the twin wheels of sun and moon, illuminating a vast expanse of mountains and rivers. Pearl springs and golden wells warm with mist; there are many more admirable things to be found here. Tier upon tier of red pavilions and painted towers, solid crimson cliffs and emerald fields; Spring willows in three seasons, autumn lotuses in nine months—this is a rare celestial cave.
It is said that Yin Jiao saw a cave dwelling on the southern side of Stone Bridge, with beast-shaped door rings and vermilion doors, resembling the mansion of a noble official. He thought to himself: "I have never been here before—once I cross the bridge, I will know for sure." When he arrived at the cave entrance, the two doors opened by themselves without being pushed. He saw inside a stone table on which there were six or seven hot steaming beans. Yin Jiao picked up one and ate it, immediately feeling its sweetness and fragrance were unlike ordinary beans. "These are excellent beans," he thought to himself. "I might as well eat them all." Just as he finished eating, he suddenly remembered: "I came here in search of weapons—how could I be idly playing around here?" He hurried out of the cave, crossed the stone bridge, and when he turned back, the cave dwelling was already gone. The prince felt doubtful in his heart and suddenly heard a sound of bones creaking throughout his body; then, out of nowhere, a hand suddenly emerged from the left side of his shoulder. The prince was startled and turned pale with shock. He saw another one emerge from the right side. In a moment, three heads and six arms suddenly sprouted, leaving Yin Jiao so frightened that he stood there with his eyes wide open and mouth agape, speechless for a long time. Just then, the white cloud child approached and called out, "Elder brother, Master is requesting your presence." At this moment, Yin Jiao felt slightly more alert. His face was blue as indigo, his hair red like cinnabar, with fangs protruding from upper and lower jaws, an extra eye added to his face; he appeared in a daze before the cave entrance. Guangchengzi clapped his hands and laughed, "How extraordinary! How extraordinary!" A benevolent ruler possesses virtue; Heaven naturally produces an unusual person." Guangchengzi ordered Yin Jiao to enter the cave and, upon reaching the peach garden inside, passed him a Fang Tian Hua Ji (a painted halberd) and said, "You go down the mountain first and proceed ahead to Xiqi. I will come later." The Daoist took out the Fantian Yin (a heavenly seal), Luohun Zhong (Soul-Dropping Bell), and Cixiong Jian (Male-Female Sword) and gave them to Yin Jiao. Yin Jiao immediately bowed in farewell and descended the mountain. Guangchengzi said, "Disciple, wait a moment. I have something to say to you." I am giving you all these treasures, but you must act in accordance with Heaven's will and the people's wishes. Advance east through the five passes to assist King Wu of Zhou and support the righteous campaign that comforts the people and punishes the guilty. Do not change your mind or hesitate; otherwise, you will incur Heavenly punishment, and it will be too late for regret." Yin Jiao said, "Master's words are mistaken! King Wu of Zhou is a virtuous and holy ruler. My father was licentious, corrupt, and tyrannical. How could I possibly make such an error and wrong the teachings of my master? If I were to change what I said before, I would suffer the calamity of being plowed under by a plow." The Daoist was greatly pleased. Yin Jiao bowed in farewell to his master. Indeed: The prince sincerely supports the holy ruler, yet one fears that others may incite disaster.
It is said that Yin Jiao left Jiuxian Mountain and used earth concealment to travel toward Xiqi. While traveling, he was unaware that the concealment light drifted and brought him down onto a high mountain. How is this good mountain described? A eulogy attests to it, which says: Reaching the sky and occupying land, turning the sun and generating clouds. Where it reaches the sky, sharp peaks tower; where it occupies the land, distant ridges stretch far away. Turning the sun is the dense pine forest on the mountain ridge; Generating clouds are the glistening rocks beneath the cliffs. Dense pines remain evergreen throughout the four seasons and eight festivals; Glistening rocks endure unchanged for thousands of years. In the forest, one often hears night monkeys wailing; in the ravine, one frequently sees demonic pythons passing by. The cries of mountain birds are stifled, and the roars of running beasts echo loudly. Mountain hares and deer move in pairs; Crows and sparrows gather in dense flocks, flying about in clusters. The mountain grasses and flowers are endless to behold; the mountain peaches and fruits ripen with each season. Although rugged and difficult to traverse, it is a place where immortals come and go.
It is said that as Yin Jiao was admiring the perilous peaks, he suddenly heard a gong clang from within the forest. He saw a man with a face blue like indigo and hair red like cinnabar riding a crimson sand horse in golden armor and a red robe, with three eyes and wielding two spiked clubs. The horse galloped up the mountain as if flying. Seeing Yin Jiao's three heads and six arms, also with three eyes, he shouted loudly, "Who are you, the one with three heads? How dare you come to my mountain to spy?" Yin Jiao replied, "I am no ordinary person. I am Yin Jiao, the crown prince of King Zhou." That man hurriedly dismounted and knelt on the ground, saying respectfully, "Why is His Highness passing through this White Dragon Mountain?" Yin Jiao said, "I have been entrusted by my master to go westward to Xiqi and meet Jiang Ziya." Before the words were finished, another man arrived on horseback. He wore a fan-shaped cloud helmet and a pale yellow robe, wielded a steel spear, rode a white dragon horse, had a face as smooth as powdered white, and bore three long whiskers. He shouted loudly, "Who is this?" The blue-faced man said, "Hurry up and pay respects to His Highness Yin." That man also had three eyes. He dismounted quickly and knelt on the ground in reverence. The two men said together, "Please allow His Highness to ascend the mountain and come to our camp for a meeting." The three walked on foot to the mountain stronghold and entered the central hall. The two men helped Yin Jiao onto a central chair and immediately kowtowed in reverence. Yin Jiao hurriedly helped them up and asked, "What are your two surnames and names?" The blue-faced man replied, "I am General Wen Liang; the fair-skinned one is surnamed Ma and named Shan." Yin Jiao said, "I see that both of you have an extraordinary appearance and are men of heroic aspirations. Why don't you join me to go westward to Xiqe and establish merit, assisting King Wu in his campaign against Zhou?" The two men said, "Why is His Highness aiding the Zhou in their rebellion to overthrow Zhou?" Yin Jiao replied, "The Mandate of Heaven for the Shang has come to an end, while that of Zhou is flourishing. Moreover, my father incurred ten crimes before all under heaven. Now, the feudal lords throughout the land follow Heaven's will and the people's desire, using righteousness to overthrow tyranny, and yielding power from the unworthy to the worthy. This is a natural course of events; it has nothing to do with our family's legacy." Wen Liang and Ma Shan said, "His Highness has spoken of this matter so eloquently; truly regarding Heaven and Earth as parents in his heart, such is the conduct of a true man. One as noble as His Highness is indeed rare." Wen Liang and Ma Shang prepared wine to celebrate joyfully. Yin Jiao instructed the outlaws on one side to change their attire and become Zhou soldiers, set fire to burn down the camp defenses, and immediately mobilized his troops. Yin Jiao and the three of them mounted their horses, left White Dragon Mountain, advanced along the main road, and headed directly toward Xiqi. Indeed: Yin Jiao had a will to return to King Zhou of the Zhou, but he feared Heaven would not allow it.
While Yin Jiao was proceeding on his way, an outlaws reported: "Your Highness, a Taoist monk riding a tiger is coming and wishes to see His Highness." Upon hearing the report, Yin Jiao quickly instructed his attendants: "Arrange for the troops to be stationed and invite him here for a meeting." The Taoist monk dismounted from the tiger and entered the tent. Yin Jiao hurried to greet him with a bow and said, "Master, where have you come from?" The Taoist monk said, "I am Shen Gongbao, a disciple of the Kunlun School. Where is His Highness going?" Yin Jiao said, "I have been entrusted by my teacher to go westward to Xiqie and pay homage to Ji Zhou. My uncle-teacher Jiang Ziya will soon be appointed as a general, and I shall assist him in his campaign against Zhou." The Taoist monk smiled and said, "Let me ask you: what relation is King Zhou to you?" Yin Jiao answered, "He is my father-king." The Taoist monk said, "Just as I thought! How can there be a principle in the world where a son helps an outsider to attack his own father?" This is nothing but a statement of disorderly filial impiety. Your father will not be long for this world; you were originally the crown prince. You should naturally succeed to the descendants of Chengtang, ascend to the supreme throne, and inherit the imperial lineage. How could there possibly be a case where one helps another person instead, destroys his own state, and ruins his own ancestral temple? This is unheard of since ancient times. Moreover, in the days to come, after a hundred years, with what face will you meet the spirits of Chengtang and his ministers who dwell in Heaven?!" I see that you possess rare treasures hidden within your body, which can bring peace to the world; your appearance is capable of determining the fate of heaven and earth. You should follow my words, preserve your own dominion, and eliminate the tyrannical King Wu of Zhou; this would be a long-term strategy." Yin Jiao replied, "Although Master's words are correct, the Mandate of Heaven is already determined. My father has been tyrannical; Heaven's will and public sentiment have turned away from him. King Zhou should rise to power. How dare I defy Heaven?" Moreover, Jiang Ziya possesses the talent of a general and statesman; his benevolence and virtue are widely spread throughout the land, and no feudal lord fails to respond. My master once instructed me to descend the mountain and assist my uncle-teacher Jiang Ziya in advancing eastward through five passes. How could I dare defy my teacher's words? This matter is absolutely impossible for me to comply with." Shen Gongbao thought to himself, "These words have no effect on him. Well then, I will try once more and see how he responds." Shen Gongbao said again, "Your Highness Yin, you say that Jiang Shang is virtuous. Where exactly does his virtue lie?" Yin Jiao said, "Jiang Ziya is a person of fairness and integrity. He respects the virtuous and humbles himself before scholars; he is kind, righteous, and benevolent. He is a man of conscience and virtue, a true gentleman with moral strength. The whole world follows him—how could one possibly look down on him?" Shen Gongbao said, "Your Highness does not know this. I have heard that a virtuous person will not destroy the natural order of humanity, will not harm people's innate nature, will not recklessly kill the innocent, and will not boast about his own achievements. Your father-king has indeed committed offenses against all under heaven; he can be considered an enemy; Your own younger brother, Yin Hong, is said to have also descended the mountain to assist Zhou. Could it be that he wished to claim credit for himself and thus turned your dear brother into ashes using a Taiji Diagram? Is this something done by a virtuous person or an unvirtuous one?" Now, Your Highness has forgotten your own kin and serves an enemy. I find this unacceptable for you." Yin Jiao was greatly shocked upon hearing these words and said, "Master, is this true?" The Taoist monk said, "All under heaven know of it. Could I possibly be lying to you? To put it plainly to you, Zhang Shan is currently stationed in Xiqi with his troops. You may ask him yourself." If Yin Hong did not commit this act, it will not be too late for you to proceed to Xiqi; if such an event truly occurred, you should avenge your brother. I will now accompany you to invite another great personage who can lend you a helping hand." Shen Gongbao rode his tiger away. Yin Jiao was deeply puzzled but had no choice but to urge his troops forward and head directly toward Xiqi. Along the way, Yin Jiao pondered deeply: "My younger brother has no grudge with all under heaven. How could he be treated in such a manner? There must not have been such an event." "If Jiang Ziya indeed treated my younger brother in this way, I shall never coexist with Jiang Shang. I will surely avenge my brother and seek other plans." The troops traveled for more than one day on the road, arriving at Xiqi. Indeed, there was a contingent of forces bearing the banner of Shang Tang stationed here. Yin Jiao ordered Wen Liang to go into the camp and ask, "Is it indeed Zhang Shan?" Now, after Yu Yi Xian left that evening, two days passed without his return; messengers were sent to inquire but no definite news was obtained. Just as they were pondering the matter, a military official suddenly arrived and reported: "Outside the camp there is a great general who claims, 'Please have the Commander-in-Chief receive His Highness's arrival,' "
and no one knows why." Please, Commander-in-Chief, decide what to do." Zhang Shan heard the report and was puzzled. He pondered deeply: "The prince has long been lost; where could this person be coming from?" He quickly gave orders, "Bring him in." The military official went out of the camp to the incoming general and said, "The Commander-in-Chief has ordered you to meet with him." Wen Liang entered the camp to see Zhang Shan and bowed respectfully. Zhang Shan asked, "General, from where have you come?" What is the purpose of your visit?" Wen Liang replied, "I have come here by order of His Highness Yin Jiao to meet with you." Zhang Shan said to Li Jin, "The prince has long been missing. How is it that there is a 'prince' here?" Li Jin, standing by the side, said, "I fear this might be genuine. Commander-in-Chief may go to meet him and observe whether he is real or fake before making a decision." Zhang Shan followed his advice, went out of the camp with Li Jin, and arrived in front of the troops. Wen Liang first entered the camp to report back to Yin Jiao, saying, "Zhang Shan has arrived." Yin Jiao said, "Bring him in." Zhang Shan entered the camp and saw Yin Jiao with three heads and six arms, his appearance fierce and ugly. On either side stood Wen Liang and Ma Shans, both of whom had three eyes. Zhang Shan asked respectfully, "Your Highness! To which branch of the Chengtang lineage do you belong?" Yin Jiao said, "I am Yin Jiao, the current Crown Prince." He then recounted his previous experiences. Upon hearing this, Zhang Shan was greatly pleased and hurriedly bowed, respectfully addressing him as "His Highness." Yin Jiao asked, "Do you know about the Second Prince Yin Hong?" Zhang Shan replied, "The Second Highness was turned into ashes by Jiang Shang using a Taiji Diagram many days ago while attacking Xiqi." After hearing this, Yin Jiao let out a loud cry and collapsed to the ground. The people around him helped him up. He wept aloud, saying, "My brother has indeed died at the hands of wicked men!" He leapt to his feet, broke a command arrow into two pieces, and said, "If I do not kill Jiang Shang, may my fate be the same as this broken arrow!" The next day, Yin Jiao personally rode out and specifically demanded that Jiang Shang come out. A scout galloped into the city, entered the prime minister's residence and reported, "Outside the city, Crown Prince Yin Jiao is requesting that Chancellor come out to speak." Jiang Ziya gave orders: "Soldiers, form ranks and march outside the city." With the sound of cannon fire, the gates of Xiqi opened. Heroes on both sides stood like tigers; warhorses galloped as if flying. On either side were arranged warriors from various camps. Jiang Ziya saw a man at the opposite gate, with three heads and six arms; his face was blue and he had fangs. On either side rode Wen Liang and Ma Shan, each holding weapons. Ne Zha secretly laughed, "Three men with nine eyes—there's an extra half-person!" Yin Jiao rode forward to the front of his troops and shouted, "Jiang Shang! Come out and face me!" Jiang Ziya stepped forward and asked, "Who dares approach?" Yin Jiao shouted angrily, "I am Crown Prince Yin Jiao! You used the Taiji Diagram to turn my younger brother Yin Hong into ashes. How can this grudge be forgotten?" Jiang Ziya did not know the cause behind it and replied, "He brought death upon himself. What does that have to do with me?" After hearing this, Yin Jiao let out a loud cry and nearly fainted. In great anger he said, "You rascal!" "You say it has nothing to do with you!" He spurred his horse and brandished a halberd, charging forward. Ne Zha, standing nearby, mounted the Fenghuo Lun (Wind-Fire Wheel) and charged straight at Yin Jiao with his Fire-Tip Spear. Their horses clashed; before several exchanges could take place, Yin Jiao struck Ne Zha with the Tianyin (Heavenly Seal), knocking him off his Fenghuo Lun. Huang Tianhua, seeing Ne Zha had fallen into a disadvantage, spurred his Yujiaqin and wielded two silver hammers to confront Yin Jiao. Jiang Ziya's men on both sides rescued Ne Zha back. Huang Tianhua did not know that Yin Jiao possessed the Luohun Zhong (Soul-Dropping Bell). Yin Jiao rang the bell; Huang Tianhua could no longer hold his saddle and fell from his horse. Zhang Shan rode forward and captured Huang Tianhua. Only after the ropes were tied did Huang Tianhua realize he had been captured. Huang Feihu, seeing his son captured, spurred forward on his Five-Color Divine Ox to fight. Yin Jiao did not say a word but brandished both spear and halberd together; After several more exchanges, Yin Jiao rang the Luohun Zhong again. Huang Feihu was thrown off his divine ox and quickly captured by Ma Shan and Wen Liang. Yang Jian, standing nearby and seeing Yin Jiao invoke the Tianyin and ring the Luohun Zhong, feared it might harm Jiang Ziya. Thinking this would be inappropriate, he quickly sounded the gong to recall his troops. Jiang Ziya hurriedly ordered his soldiers into the city and sat in the hall, deep in thought. Yang Jian ascended the hall and reported, "Uncle Master, now once again..."
"an extraordinary matter has arisen!" Jiang Ziya asked, "What is this strange occurrence?" Yang Jian said, "Disciple observed that Yin Jiao struck Ne Zha using the Tianyin; this treasure belongs to my senior master Guangchengzi. How could it have ended up in Yin Jiao's possession?" Jiang Ziya said, "Could it be that Master Guangchengzi sent him to attack us?" Yang Jian replied, "Has Uncle Master forgotten the story of Yin Hong?" Jiang Ziya suddenly understood.
Meanwhile, Yin Jiao brought the Huang family father and son to his central camp. Huang Feihu carefully observed and realized it was not Yin Jiao himself. Yin Jiao asked, "Who are you?" Huang Feihu said, "I am General Huang Feihu of Wucheng." Yin Jiao said, "There is also a General Huang Feihu of Wuchcheng in Xiqi?" Zhang Shan, sitting nearby, leaned forward and replied, "This is the very Huang Feihu who stood before the Son of Heaven; he rebelled against five passes, defected to King Wu of Zhou, and thus became a traitor, bringing about war; now he has been captured. As the saying goes, 'The heavenly net is vast but lets nothing escape.' This is simply his own doing." Yin Jiao, upon hearing these words, hurriedly left the tent and personally untied their ropes, bowing and saying, "Gracious benefactor! Had it not been for you General in days past, how could I have survived to this day?" He quickly asked Huang Feihu, "Who is this man?" Huang Feihu replied, "This is my eldest son, Huang Tianhua." Yin Jiao immediately gave orders to release him as well; and said to Huang Feihu, "In the past, General saved my brother and me; today I release you and your son as a repayment of that kindness." After expressing his gratitude, Huang Feihu asked, "Your Highness, when the wind carried you away at that time, where did you end up?" Yin Jiao refused to reveal the truth, fearing it might expose a secret. He vaguely replied, "At that time, I was rescued by immortal sages on an island and studied in the mountains; now I have specially descended from the mountain to avenge my brother." Today, I have already repaid General's great kindness. If we meet again in battle later, please kindly avoid me. If captured once more, I shall surely be punished according to the law of the state." The Huang family father and son took their leave from the camp and went down to the city gate, calling for it to be opened. The gate guards recognized them as the Huang family father and son and quickly opened the city gates to let them in. Father and son entered the Prime Minister's residence to see Jiang Ziya, recounting all that had happened. Jiang Ziya was greatly pleased. The next day, a scout reported: "A general requests battle." Jiang Ziya asked, "Who will go and meet him?" Deng Jiugong nearby volunteered to go. Jiang Ziya agreed. Deng Jiugong accepted the order and left the residence, mounted his horse with sword in hand, and opened the city gate; he saw a general on white horse wielding a long spear, wearing a light yellow robe. How was he described: He wore a Shan Yun Guan (Fan Cloud Crown), radiating four beams of light; a yellow robe, with purple qi swirling around it; silver-leafed armor, dazzling and brilliant; three ribbons of sash crossed behind his back; his white dragon horse could chase the wind and catch up with the sun; his Chuju Spear resembled a huge python or stubborn snake. He cultivated in an immortal mountain and cave dwelling, achieving the Dao with righteousness and no evil.
As it happened, Deng Jiugong shouted loudly, "Who dares approach?" Ma Shan said, "I am the general Ma Shan." Deng Jiugong did not introduce himself but spurred his horse and brandished his saber, charging straight forward. Ma Shan met him head-on with a spear strike. Their horses circled each other, and after twelve or thirteen exchanges of blows, Deng Jiugong's swordsmanship was divine. Ma Shan could not hold his ground. Deng Jiugong deftly slashed with a stroke, forcing Ma Shan to drop his spear, then grabbed the sash at Ma Shan's waist, lifted him over the saddle, and flung him down, capturing him alive. He brought Ma Shan into the city to the Prime Minister's residence to see Jiang Ziya. Jiang Ziya asked, "General, how did you fare in battle?" Deng Jiugong said, "I captured a general named Ma Shan; he is waiting before the residence for your orders, Chancellor." Jiang Ziya ordered, "Bring him forward." After a short while, Ma Shan was pushed to the hall. The man showed no fear at all and stood upright without kneeling. Jiang Ziya said, "Now that you have been captured, why do you not kneel?" Ma Shan laughed loudly and scolded, "Old rascal!" You are a traitor to your country. Now that I have been captured, if you wish to kill me, do so—why speak so much!" Jiang Ziya became furious and ordered, "Drag him out of the residence and behead him. Report back when it is done!" Nan Gong Shi was the execution supervisor. When Ma Shan was pushed before the residence, as soon as the execution signal arrow was shot out, Nan Gong Shi raised his saber and beheaded him in one swift stroke, just like cutting vegetables. Indeed:
The steel saber, as it passed through, grew longer with each stroke, just like slicing water.
Nan Gong Shi saw this and was greatly startled. He hurriedly returned to the Prime Minister's residence and reported, "Your Chancellorship: something extraordinary has occurred!" Jiang Ziya asked, "What is it you wish to say?" Nan Gong Shi said, "I was ordered to behead Ma Shan three times. Each time I cut through him on this side, he would immediately regrow there. I do not know what kind of illusionary technique this is. Please, Chancellor, decide what should be done." Jiang Ziya heard the report and was greatly shocked. He quickly left the residence with his generals to personally witness it, and indeed, it was the same. Standing nearby, Wei Hu invoked his Jiangmo Chu (Demonsubduing Pestle) and struck down at Ma Shan. It hit the center of Ma Shan's forehead, striking a burst of golden light that scattered across the ground. Wei Hu retrieved his pestle, but it was still in human form. The crowd of officers were greatly startled and exclaimed, "How strange!" Jiang Ziya had no plan left. He ordered his disciples, "Borrow the Sanmei True Fire to burn this demon!" Standing nearby were Ne Zha, Jin Zhu and Mu Zhu (the two sons of Jin and Mu), Lei Zhensi, Huang Tianhua, and Wei Hu. They conjured the Sanmei True Fire and burned it. Ma Shan took advantage of the rising firelight and laughed loudly, saying, "I am leaving now!" Yang Jian saw Ma Shan escape in the firelight. Jiang Ziya was inwardly displeased. Everyone returned to the residence, and they discussed it without further mention. Meanwhile, Ma Shan returned to the camp and reported to Yin Jiao. He recounted in detail how he had been captured, how they had beheaded him, and how they had set fire to burn him, saying, "Your subordinate borrowed the firelight to return." Yin Jiao heard this and was greatly pleased. Jiang Ziya sat in deep thought within the residence. Just then, Yang Jian ascended the hall and said to Jiang Ziya, "Disciple will go to Jiuxianshan Mountain to investigate the truth and see what it is like. Secondly, I will go to Zhongnan Mountain and visit Uncle Yunzhongzi. I shall borrow the Zhaoyao Jian (Demon-Identifying Mirror) from him to see what kind of creature Ma Shan is, so that we may deal with it properly." Jiang Ziya agreed. Yang Jian left Xiqi and, using a soil 遁 (earth 遁), directly traveled to Jiuxianshan Mountain; In no time at all, he arrived at Taoyuandong Cave and came to see Guangchengzi. Yang Jian bowed and respectfully addressed him as "Uncle Master." Guangchengzi said, "The other day I sent Yin Jiao down the mountain to Xiqi with Jiang Ziya to attack King Zhou. Was it a good idea for him to have three heads and six arms?" "On the day of the investiture, you will come again under his command." Yang Jian said, "Now Yin Jiao is not attacking Chaoguo but instead attacking Xiqi. He has injured Ne Zha and others with Uncle Master's Fantian Seal, acting recklessly and violently." "Disciple was ordered by Jiang Ziya to specially come here to investigate his true situation." Guangchengzi, upon hearing this, shouted loudly, "This beast has violated the master's words and is bound to suffer an unforeseen disaster! But I gave him all the treasures in my cave. Who could have foreseen this turn of events today." He called to Yang Jian, "You go back first; I will come along shortly." Yang Jian left Jiuxianshan Mountain and directly went to Zhongnan Mountain. In a moment, he arrived; He entered the cave residence, paid respects to Yunzhongzi, and respectfully addressed him as "Uncle Master. Recently, a man named Ma Shan has come to Xiqi; he cannot be killed or beheaded, nor can water or fire harm him. I do not know what sort of creature is causing this disturbance. I have specially come to borrow the master's Zhaoyao Jian for use." "After we eliminate this demon, I will immediately return it to you." Yunzhongzi heard this and immediately gave the treasure mirror to Yang Jian. Yang Jian left Zhongnan Mountain, went toward Xiqi, and arrived at the Chancellor's residence, where he paid respects to Jiang Ziya. Jiang Ziya asked, "Yang Jian, you went to Jiuxianshan Mountain and saw Guangchengzi—how did the matter go?" Yang Jian recounted each of the aforementioned events in detail; He also explained how he had obtained the Zhaoyao (Demon-Identifying) Mirror. Jiang Ziya ordered, "Tomorrow you may confront Ma Shan." The next day, Yang Jian mounted his horse with sword in hand and went to the front of the camp to request battle. He specifically called out for Ma Shan to come out. A scout galloped into the central command tent. Yin Jiao ordered Ma Shan to leave the camp. Ma Shan arrived at the front of the army, and Yang Jian secretly took out the treasure mirror to examine him. It turned out that inside was merely a flickering wick of a lamp. Yang Jian put away the mirror, spurred his horse forward with sword in hand, and charged directly at Ma Shan. The two horses clashed, swords and spears raised together; they fought for some twenty to thirty rounds. Yang Jian then turned his horse and rode off. Ma Shan did not pursue, returned to the camp, and reported to Yin Jiao: "I fought with Yang Jian. That fellow fled in defeat, but your subordinate did not go after him." Yin Jiao said, "Knowing yourself and knowing the enemy is the essential principle of military strategy. This is precisely the case."
Meanwhile, Yang Jian returned to camp and entered the residence. Jiang Ziya asked, "What kind of creature is Ma Shan?" Yang Jian replied, "Disciple examined Ma Shan with the mirror and found it to be merely a flickering lamp wick. I do not yet know the details." Standing nearby, Wei Hu said, "In this world there are three places with three lamps: one lamp is in the Bagjing Palace of Xuandou Dong; one lamp is at Yuxu Gong; and one lamp is on Lingjiu Mountain. Could it be that this lamp is the source of the disturbance?" "Yang Daoxiong, you may go and inspect these three places; then you will know for certain." Yang Jian was delighted at the suggestion and wished to go. Jiang Ziya gave his approval. Yang Jian left Xiqi first and went toward Yuxu Gong; he rode on a soil 遁 (earth 遁) to travel. Indeed: With the wind's sound, he traveled a thousand li; in the time it takes for one meal, he arrived at Yuxu.
Now, Yang Jian had never before visited Kunlun Mountain; upon seeing the extraordinary scenery, he could not help but admire it. How was this described: Jade towers and jade pavilions—this is the Kunlun of the upper realms. The hollow valleys echoed with the sounds of nature; the quiet surroundings exuded a fragrant aura from heaven. Green pines, drenched in rain, shaded the tall pavilions; emerald bamboos, faintly visible, lined both sides of the path. The rosy glow was ethereal, and colorful hues drifted gracefully. Red railings and green balustrades; painted beams and carved eaves. The fragrance of incense filled the hall as they discussed scriptures; in quiet stillness, the moon shone through the window. Birds sang within the crimson trees; cranes drank from the stone springs nearby. The strange flowers and rare grasses never withered through the four seasons; golden light shot forth as the palace gates opened. Towers and pavilions appeared and disappeared within auspicious clouds, while the resonant tones of jade chimes and golden bells echoed for a long time. Pearl curtains half-drawn; incense smoke curled from within the censer. Only by studying the "Huangting" (Yellow Court) could one attain sainthood; the leader of ten thousand immortals presided over the East.
Now, Yang Jian arrived at Qilin Cliff and, after admiring the scenery of Kunlun, dared not enter 擅自 (without permission) but stood outside the palace, waiting for a long time; Just then, Bahe Tongzi came out of the palace. Yang Jian stepped forward and bowed respectfully, addressing him as "Elder Brother," and said, "Disciple Yang Jian dares to ask—has the Liuli (Lapis Lazuli) Lamp before Master been lit?" Bahe Tongzi replied, "It is lit." Yang Jian thought to himself, "Since it is lit here, this must not be the place. I should go to Lingjiu Mountain instead." At that time, he left Yuxu and directly went toward Lingjiu Mountain. How fast! Indeed: With mist and clouds beneath his feet, the immortal's body was light; to pass through the Xuanmen (Mysterious Gate) required reliance on the Five Elements. He traveled around the world in a moment, and just as he had arrived at Kunlun, he was already at Yujing.
Yang Jian entered Yuanjue Dong (Awakening Awareness Cave), knelt down, and respectfully said, "Master, disciple Yang Jian pays his respects." Randel asked, "What have you come for?" Yang Jian replied, "The Liuli Lamp before Master has gone out." The Daoist raised his head and saw that the lamp had gone out. With a startled "Ah!", he exclaimed, "This wretched demon has escaped!" Yang Jian recounted all the aforementioned events in detail. Randel said, "You go first; I will come shortly." Yang Jian bid farewell to Randel, borrowed the earth 遁 (soil 遁) and directly returned to Xiqi. Upon arriving at the Chancellor's residence, he came before Jiang Ziya and recounted what had happened when he visited Yuxu and saw Randel: "...Master Randel will come shortly." Jiang Ziya was greatly pleased. Just as they were speaking, a gate official reported, "Guangchengzi has arrived." Jiang Ziya welcomed him to the hall. Guangchengzi apologized to Jiang Ziya, saying, "I did not know of this great change; I had no idea Yin Jiao would turn his thoughts against us. This is my fault." "I shall go out and bring him here to see you." Guangchengzi immediately left the city and went to the front of Yin Jiao's camp, shouting loudly, "Pass along my words to Yin Jiao—come quickly and see me!" What will happen next?
