Chapter 62: Zhang Shan and Li Jin Attack Xiqi

诗曰： 抢攘兵戈日不宁，生民涂炭自零星。甘驱苍赤填沟壑，忍令脂膏实羽翎。战士有心勤国主，彼苍无意固皇扃。只因大劫人多难，致使西岐杀戮腥。

The poem says: In days of turmoil and war, peace is nowhere to be found; the common people suffer in misery, scattered like stars. They are forced to fill ditches and ravines with black and red earth; how can one bear to let fat and marrow be used to stuff feathers? The warriors have a loyal heart for serving their sovereign, but Heaven has no intention of preserving the imperial throne. It is because in this great calamity many people suffer hardships, thus causing Xi Qi to be filled with bloodshed and stench.

话说差官一路无词，来到朝歌域，至馆驿中歇下。次日，进午门，至文书房。那日是中大夫方景春看本，忽然接著看时，见苏护已降岐周，方景春点首骂曰：“老匹天！一门尽受天子宠眷，不思报本，今日反降叛逆，真狗彘之不若！”遂抱本入内庭，问侍御官曰：“天子在何处？”左右侍御对曰：“在摘星楼。”方景春竟至楼下候旨。左右启上天子。纣王闻奏，宣上楼，朝贺毕，王曰：“大夫有何奏章？”方景春奏曰：“汜水关总兵官韩荣具本到都城，奏为冀州侯苏护世受椒房之贵，满门叨其恩宠，不思报国，反降叛逆，深负圣恩，法纪安在？具本申奏。臣未敢擅便，请旨定夺。”纣王见奏大惊曰：“苏护乃朕心腹之臣，贵戚之卿，如何一旦反降周助恶，情殊痛恨！大夫暂退，朕自理会。”方景春下楼。纣王宣苏皇后。妲己在御屏后，已听知此事，闻宣，竟至纣王御案前，双膝跪下，两泪如珠，娇声软语，泣而奏曰：“妾在深宫，荷蒙圣上恩宠，粉骨难消。不知父亲受何人唆使，反降叛逆，罪恶通天，法当族诛，情无可赦。愿陛下斩妲己之首，悬于都城，以谢天下。庶百官万姓知陛下圣明，乾纲在握，守祖宗成法，不私贵幸，正妾之报陛下恩遇之荣，死有馀幸矣。”道罢，将香肌伏在纣王膝上，相偎相倚，悲悲泣泣，泪雨如注。纣王见妲己泪流满面，娇啼婉转，真如带雨梨花，啼春娇鸟，纣王见如此态度，更觉动情，用手挽起，口称：“御妻，汝父反朕，你在深宫，如何得知？何罪之有？赐卿平身，毋得自戚，有损花容。纵朕将江山尽失，也与爱卿无干。幸宜自爱。”妲己谢恩。纣王次日升九间殿，聚众文武，曰：“苏侯叛朕归周，情实痛恨！谁与孤代劳伐周，将苏护并叛逆众人拿解朕躬，以正其罪？”班中闪出一员大臣，乃上大夫李定；进前奏曰：“姜尚足智多谋，知人善使，故所到者非败即降，累辱王师，大为不轨。若不择人而用，速正厥罪，则天下诸侯皆观望效尤，何以惩将来！臣举大元戎张山，久于用兵，慎事虑谋，可堪斯任，庶几不辱君命。”纣王闻奏大喜，即命传诏赍发，差官往三山关来。使命离了朝歌，一路上无词。一日到了三山关馆驿歇下。次日传与管关元帅张山同钱保、李锦等来馆驿，接了圣旨，至府堂上焚香案，跪听开读诏敕。 “诏曰：“征伐虽在于天子；功成乃在阃外元戎。姬发猖獗，大恶难驱，屡战失机，情殊痛恨！朕欲亲往讨贼，百司谏阻。兹尔张山，素有才望。上大夫李定等特荐卿得专征伐。尔其用心料理，克振壮猷，毋负朕倚托之重。俟旋凯之日，朕决不食言，以吝此茅土之赏。尔其钦哉！特诏。”

The envoy, having no words along the way, arrived at Chao Ge territory and stopped to rest at an inn. The next day, he entered Wumen Gate and went to the Office of Documents. That day, Zhong Dafu Fang Jingchun was reviewing the documents. When he suddenly received and examined them, he saw that Su Hu had already surrendered to Qi Zhou. Fang Jingchun nodded and scolded, "Old rogue!" "Your whole family has received the emperor's favor and patronage, yet you never thought of repaying it. Today you have turned to surrender to a rebel instead; you are truly worse than dogs and pigs!" He then took the documents into the inner court and asked the imperial attendants, "Where is the Son of Heaven?" The attendants on both sides replied, "He is at Zhaixing Lou." Fang Jingchun went all the way to the foot of the tower to await an imperial decree. The attendants on both sides informed the Son of Heaven above. King Zhou, having heard the report, summoned him onto the tower. After the court paid homage, the king asked, "Minister, what memorial do you have to present?" Fang Jingchun presented his report, saying, "The commander of Fanshui Guan, Han Rong, has submitted a memorial to the capital city. He reports that Ji Zhou Hou Su Hu's family has long enjoyed noble status through their connection with the imperial harem and have received great favors from the court, yet they never thought of serving the country but instead surrendered to rebels. They have deeply betrayed His Majesty's grace—where is law and discipline now?" He has submitted a detailed memorial for Your Majesty's consideration. "I have not dared to act on my own, but humbly request an imperial decree to decide the matter." King Zhou, upon hearing this, was greatly shocked and said, "Su Hu is one of my trusted ministers and a noble relative. How could he suddenly turn to surrender to the Zhou and aid the wicked? This situation fills me with deep sorrow and anger!" "Minister, you may withdraw for now; I shall personally handle this matter." Fang Jingchun descended from the tower. King Zhou summoned Empress Su. Daji, who had been listening from behind the imperial screen, heard of this matter. Upon being summoned, she went directly to King Zhou's desk, knelt on both knees, wept with tears like pearls, and in a soft,娇柔 voice, sobbed and presented her report: "I, your humble concubine, have long dwelled in the inner palace and received Your Majesty's boundless grace; even if I were to crumble into dust, it would be impossible to repay this kindness. "I do not know what person has incited my father, causing him to surrender to rebels and commit crimes so heinous they reach the heavens. By law, his entire clan should be executed; there is no possible mercy for such a situation." "I humbly request that Your Majesty cut off Daji's head and hang it in the capital city, to atone before all under heaven." "Only then will the hundred officials and ten thousand common people know that Your Majesty is wise and just, firmly holding the reins of power, upholding our ancestors' established laws, not showing favoritism to nobles or favorites. This would be my greatest honor in repaying Your Majesty's kindness; I would consider it a privilege even if I were to die for this." After finishing her words, she laid her fragrant body on King Zhou's knees, leaning close to him, weeping bitterly with tears streaming like rain. King Zhou saw Daji weeping with tears streaming down her face, her soft and sorrowful cries like a pear blossom in the rain or a spring bird crying tenderly. Seeing such an emotional display, King Zhou felt even more moved. He reached out to comfort her and said, "My imperial wife, how could you know that your father has betrayed me while you remain secluded in the palace?" "What crime have I committed?" "I grant you permission to rise. Do not grieve so, for it would mar your beauty." "Even if I were to lose the entire realm, it has nothing to do with you, my beloved concubine." "I hope you will take good care of yourself." Daji kowtowed in gratitude. The next day, King Zhou ascended the Jiujian Hall and gathered all his civil and military officials. He said, "Marquis Su has betrayed me to go over to the Zhou—this situation fills me with deep pain and anger!" "Who among you will take on the task of leading an expedition against the Zhou for me, capture Su Hu and all those who have rebelled, and bring them before me so that their crimes may be punished?" From among the officials, a minister stepped forward. He was Shang Dafu Li Ding; He stepped forward and presented his report, saying: "Jiang Shang is full of wisdom and strategy; he knows how to use people well. Therefore, wherever he goes, the enemy either surrenders or suffers defeat. He has repeatedly humiliated our imperial forces and committed great acts of treason." "If we do not carefully select the right person to deal with him and swiftly punish his crimes, then all the feudal lords under heaven will watch and follow suit. How can this serve as a warning for the future!" "Therefore, I recommend Da Yuanrong Zhang Shan. He has long been experienced in military affairs and is prudent in planning; he is capable of this task and would not disgrace Your Majesty's command." King Zhou, upon hearing the report, was greatly pleased. He immediately ordered an imperial decree to be issued and dispatched officials to go to Sanshan Guan. The envoys left Chaoge and traveled along the way without speaking a word. One day, they arrived at an inn in Sanshan Guan and stopped to rest. The next day, the commander of Sanshan Guan, Zhang Shan, along with Qian Bao and Li Jin, was summoned to the inn. They received the imperial decree, went to the hall in the residence, burned incense at the table, and knelt to listen as the edict was read aloud. "The decree said: "Though military campaigns lie in the hands of the Son of Heaven; the success lies with the generals on the frontier. Ji Fa is rampant and commits great evils that are hard to quell; he has repeatedly failed in battle, a situation that fills me with deep sorrow and hatred! I wish to personally lead the campaign against this bandit, but all my officials have advised me against it. Therefore, you, Zhang Shan, who has long been known for your talent and reputation, have been specially recommended by Shang Dafu Li Ding et al. to be granted full authority over military campaigns. You must use your heart and mind to manage the matter well, strive to achieve great feats, and do not fail in the heavy trust I place upon you. When the day of your victorious return comes, I shall certainly keep my word and not withhold this reward of land." You must take these words to heart!" "Special decree."

钦差官读罢诏旨，众官谢恩毕，管待使臣，打发回朝歌。张山等候交代官洪锦，交割事体明白，方好进兵。

After the imperial envoy finished reading the decree, all officials kowtowed in thanks. The host then entertained the envoys and sent them back to Chaoge. Zhang Shan waited for the official Hong Jin, who was responsible for handing over duties, until all matters were clearly transferred before proceeding to mobilize his troops.

一日，洪锦到任。张山起兵；领人马十万，左右先行乃钱保、李锦；佐贰乃马德、桑元。一路上人喊马嘶，正值初夏天气，风和日暖，梅雨霏霏，真好光景。怎见得，有诗为证： “冉冉绿阴密，风轻燕引雏。新荷翻沼面，修竹渐扶苏。芳草连天碧，山花遍地铺。溪边蒲插剑，榴火壮行图。何时了王事，镇日醉呼卢。”

One day, Hong Jin assumed office. Zhang Shan raised his army; commanding an army of one hundred thousand men, with Qian Bao and Li Jing as his leading generals on the left and right flanks; the deputy commanders were Ma De and Sang Yuan. Along the way, men shouted and horses neighed. It was early summer; the weather was warm with gentle winds and sunny days, while drizzle fell like mist—truly a beautiful scene. How can this be described? A poem serves as evidence: "The verdant shade grows dense and deep, the gentle wind carries swallows guiding their young. New lotus blossoms sway on the pond's surface; tall bamboo gradually supports the withered grass." "Sweet-scented herbs stretch to the horizon in emerald green, and mountain flowers blanket the ground like a carpet. By the stream, reeds stand like swords; the blazing pomegranate blossoms strengthen the soldiers' resolve as they march forward." "When will our royal duties ever end? We would rather spend all day drunk and playing lu."

话说张山人马一路晚住晓行，也受了些饥餐渴饮，鞍马奔驰，不一日，来到西岐北门。左右报入行营：“禀元帅：前哨人马已至岐周北门。”张山传令：“安营。”一声炮响，三军呐喊，绞起中军帐来。张山坐定，只见钱保、李锦上帐参谒。钱保曰：“兵行百里，不战自疲，请主帅定夺。”张山谓二将曰：“将军之言甚善。姜尚乃智谋之士，不可轻敌。况吾师远来，利在速战。今日暂歇息军士，吾明日自有调用。”二将应诺而退。

Speaking of Zhang Shan's army, they traveled day and night, enduring hunger and thirst along the way as they rode tirelessly on horseback. In no time at all, they arrived at the northern gate of Xi Qi. The attendants reported into the field headquarters: "Your Excellency, our vanguard forces have arrived at the northern gate of Qi Zhou." Zhang Shan gave orders: "Set up camp." A cannon roared, the three armies shouted in unison, and the central command tent was raised. Zhang Shan took his seat; soon, Qian Bao and Li Jinyu entered the tent to pay their respects. Qian Bao said, "Marching an army a hundred li without battle exhausts them on its own; please, my commander, decide what to do." Zhang Shan said to the two generals, "Your words are very wise. "Jiang Shang is a man of wisdom and strategy; we must not underestimate him. Moreover, our troops have come from afar; the advantage lies in fighting quickly. "Today we shall let the soldiers rest for a while; I will make my own arrangements tomorrow." The two generals bowed and withdrew.

且言子牙在西岐，日日与众门人共议拜将之期，命黄飞虎造大红旗帜，不要杂色。黄飞虎曰：“旗号乃三军眼目。旗分五色，原为按五方之位次，使三军知左右前后，进退攻击之法，不得错乱队伍。若纯是一色红旗，则三军不知东南西北，何以知进退趋避之方？犹恐不便。或其中另有妙用？乞丞相一一教之。”子牙笑曰：“将军实不知其故耳。红者火也。今主上所居之地乃是西方；此地原自属金，非借火炼，寒金岂能为之有用，此正兴周之兆。然于旗上另安号带，须按青、黄、赤、白、黑五色，使三军各自认识，自然不能乱耳。又使敌军一望生疑，莫知其故，自然致败。兵法云：“疑则生乱。”正此故耳。又何不可之有？”黄飞虎打躬谢曰：“丞相妙算如神！”子牙又令辛甲造军器，只见天下八百诸侯又表上西岐，请武王伐纣，会兵于孟津。子牙接表，与众将官商议：“恐武王不肯行。”众人正迟疑间，只见探事官报入相府，来报子牙曰：“成汤有人马在北门安营，主将乃三山关总兵张山。”子牙听说，忙问邓九公曰：“张山用兵如何？”邓九公曰：“张山原是末将交代官，此人乃一勇之将耳。”正话之时，又报：“有将请战。”子牙传令：“谁去走遭？”邓九公欠身：“末将愿往。”领令出城；见一员战将，如一轮火车，滚至军前。怎见得打扮骁勇，有赞为证，赞曰： 顶上金盔分凤翅，黄金铠挂龙鳞砌。大红袍上绣团花，丝蛮宝带吞头异。腰下常悬三尺锋，打阵银锤如猛鸷。撺山跳涧紫骅骝，斩将钢刀生杀气。一心分免纣王忧，万古流传在史记。

Meanwhile, in Xi Qi, Ziya met daily with his disciples to discuss the timing for appointing a general. He ordered Huang Feihu to make large red banners without any other colors mixed in. Huang Feihu said, "Banners are the eyes and guidance for the three armies. The five-colored flags originally marked the positions of the Five Directions, enabling the three armies to know their left and right, front and back, as well as how to advance, retreat, or attack without disordering the ranks. "If we use only red flags of a single color, then the three armies will not know east from west or north from south; how can they discern directions for advancing, retreating, or evading?" "It would still be inconvenient." "Or perhaps there is some hidden strategy in this request?" "I humbly beg the Prime Minister to explain it clearly." Ziya smiled and said, "General, you truly do not know the reason. łoż Red represents fire. The current sovereign's territory is in the west; this place originally belongs to metal. Without fire refining it, how can cold metal become useful? This is precisely an omen of the Zhou's rise." "However, we will add colored sashes to the flags—green, yellow, red, white, and black—to mark them according to the Five Colors. This way, each unit of the three armies can easily recognize their own banners, and naturally there will be no confusion." Moreover, this would cause the enemy army to become suspicious at a glance, unsure of our intentions, which would naturally lead to their defeat. Military strategy says: "Doubt leads to disorder." This is precisely the reason. "What could possibly be wrong with this?" Huang Feihu bowed and thanked, saying, "The Prime Minister's strategy is as divine as a god!" Ziya also ordered Xin Jia to manufacture military equipment. At this time, another eight hundred feudal lords from under heaven submitted a petition to Xi Qi, requesting King Wu to attack Zhou and gather their forces at Mengjin. Ziya received the petition and discussed it with his generals: "I fear King Wu will not agree to go ahead." While the people were still hesitating, a scout officer suddenly entered the prime minister's residence and reported to Ziya: "Forces from Cheng Tang have set up camp at the northern gate. The commander is Zhang Shan, the overall commander of Sanshan Guan." Upon hearing this, Ziya quickly asked Deng Jiugong: "How is Zhang Shan in terms of military strategy?" Deng Jiugong said, "Zhang Shan was originally my subordinate officer. This man is merely a brave general." Just as he finished speaking, another report came in: "A general requests to fight." Ziya gave orders: "Who will go and take a look?" Deng Jiugong bowed slightly and said, "I am willing to go." He took the order and left the city; he saw a general, like a blazing chariot of fire, rolling toward the front lines. How was he dressed in a gallant manner? A eulogy serves as evidence. The eulogy says: On his head, a golden helmet with phoenix wings; golden armor adorned like dragon scales. His crimson robe was embroidered with round floral patterns, and the silk belt at his waist was a marvel of exquisite craftsmanship. At his waist hung a three-foot sharp sword; his silver mace for breaking enemy formations was as fierce as a hawk of prey. His purple-splashed steed could leap over mountains and streams; his steel sword for slaying generals exuded a deadly aura. With a single heart devoted to relieving King Zhou's worries, his deeds would be recorded and passed down in history for all time.

话说邓九公马至军前，看来者乃是钱保也。邓九公大叫曰：“钱将军，你且回去；请张山出来，吾与他自有话说。”钱保指九公大骂曰：“反贼！纣王有何事负你！朝廷拜你为大将，宠任非轻，不思报本，一旦投降叛逆，真狗彘不若！尚有何面目立于天地之间！”邓九公被数语骂得满面通红，亦骂曰：“钱保！料你一匹夫，有何能处，敢出此大言！你比闻太师何如？况他也不过如此。早受吾一刀，免致三军受苦。”言罢，纵马舞刀，直取钱保。钱保手中刀急架相还。二马盘旋，看一场大战。怎见得： 二将坐鞍鞽，征云透九霄。急取壶中箭，忙拔紫金镖。这一个兴心安社稷，那一个用意正天朝。这一个千载垂青史；那一个万载把名标。真如一对狻猊斗，不亚翻江两怪蛟。

Now, as Deng Jiugong rode to the front of the army, he saw that the one coming was Qian Bao. Deng Jiugong shouted loudly: "General Qian, you return first; ask Zhang Shan to come out. I have something to say to him myself." Qian Bao pointed at Jiugong and scolded, "Rebel! What has King Zhou ever done to wrong you! The royal court appointed you as a great general, bestowing upon you no small honor. You did not think of repaying this favor, yet suddenly surrendered to rebels. You are truly worse than dogs and pigs! What face do you still have to stand among heaven and earth!" Deng Jiugong, stung by these words and turning red in the face, also scolded: "Qian Bao! I suppose you are just a common man. What ability do you have to dare speak such big words! How do you compare with Duke Wen?" Moreover, he is no better than this. Die under my blade early on and spare the three armies from suffering." After saying this, he spurred his horse forward, brandished his sword, and charged straight at Qian Bao. Qian Bao quickly raised his sword to block the attack. The two horses circled each other, and a great battle ensued. How was it? The two generals sat on their saddles; the war clouds pierced through the nine heavens. They quickly took arrows from their quivers and hastily drew purple-gold darts. One was determined to stabilize the state, while the other sought to correct the heavenly mandate of the dynasty. One would be recorded in history for a thousand years; the other would have his name inscribed through eternity. They were like a pair of fighting lion cubs, no less fierce than two monstrous dragons churning the river.

话说邓九公大战钱保有三十回合，钱保岂邓九公对手，被九公回马刀劈于马下，枭首级进城，来见子牙，请令定夺。子牙大悦，记功宴贺。不表。只见败兵报与张山说：“钱保被邓九公枭首级进城去了。”张山闻报大怒。次日，亲临阵前，坐名要邓九公答话。报马报入相府，言：“有将请战，要邓将军答话。”邓九公挺身而出。有女邓婵玉愿随压阵。子牙许之。九公同女出城，张山一见邓九公走马至军前，乃大骂曰：“反贼匹夫！国家有何事亏你，背恩忘义，一旦而事敌国，死有馀辜！今不倒戈受缚，尚敢恃强，杀朝廷命官。今日拿匹夫解上朝歌，以正大法。”邓九公曰：“你既为大将，上不知天时，下不谙人事，空生在世，可惜衣冠著体，真乃人中之畜生耳！今纣王贪淫无道，残虐不仁，天下诸侯不归纣而归周，天心人意可见。汝尚欲勉强逆天，是自取辱身之祸，与闻太师等枉送性命耳。可听吾言，下马归周，共伐独夫，拯溺救焚，上顺天心，下酧民愿，自不失封侯之位。若勉强支吾，悔无及矣。”张山大怒，骂曰：“利口匹夫！敢假此无稽之言，惑世诬民，碎尸不足以尽其辜！”摇枪直取。邓九公刀迎面还来。二将相持，一场赌斗。怎见得，有赞为证，赞日： 轻举擎天手，生死在轮回。往来无定论，叱吒似春雷。一个恨不得平吞你脑袋；一个恨不得活砍你颐腮。只杀得一个天昏地暗没三才，那时节方才两下分开。

Now, Deng Jiugong fought Qian Bao for thirty rounds. Qian Bao was no match for Deng Jiugong and was slashed from his horse by a backhanded strike as Jiugong wheeled his horse around. Jiugong beheaded him and brought the head into the city to report to Ziya, requesting orders on what should be done next. Ziya was greatly pleased and recorded the feat with a banquet in celebration. No further details are given. Meanwhile, the retreating soldiers reported to Zhang Shan: "Qian Bao has been beheaded by Deng Jiugong and his head was taken into the city." Zhang Shan, upon hearing this report, became furious. The next day, he personally went to the front lines and demanded Deng Jiugong come out for a parley. A scout horseman reported into the prime minister's residence, saying: "There is a general requesting battle and demanding General Deng Jiugong to come out for parley." Deng Jiugong stepped forward. His daughter, Deng Chanyu, volunteered to accompany him and take part in the battle. Ziya agreed. Jiugong left the city with his daughter. Upon seeing Deng Jiugong ride up to the front lines, Zhang Shan immediately scolded: "Rebel ruffian! What has your country ever done to you that you would betray its kindness and forget loyalty, suddenly serving an enemy state? You deserve death a thousand times over! Now, instead of surrendering with your sword turned against us, you dare to rely on strength and kill an official appointed by the imperial court. Today I will capture this ruffian and take him back to Chao Ge, to enforce justice according to the law." Deng Jiugong replied: "You, as a general, know nothing of the heavens above and understand nothing of human affairs below. You are born in vain. It is a pity that you wear fine clothes on your body; truly, you are no better than an animal among men! Now King Zhou is greedy, lustful, and tyrannical; he is cruel and unkind. All the feudal lords under heaven do not submit to Zhou but turn to Zhou instead—this shows clearly the will of Heaven and the hearts of the people. You still dare to stubbornly defy Heaven's will; this is only bringing disaster and disgrace upon yourself, just like Duke Wen and others who wasted their lives in vain. Listen to my words, dismount your horse and submit to Zhou. Together we can attack the tyrant, rescue those in distress and from fire. This will please Heaven above and fulfill the people's wishes below; you yourself would not lose a marquis title. If you stubbornly resist, it will be too late to regret." Zhang Shan became furious and scolded: "Smooth-talking ruffian! You dare to spread such baseless words, misleading the world and defaming the people. Even dismembering you would not be enough to repay your guilt!" He waved his spear and charged directly at him. Deng Jiugong raised his sword to meet the attack head-on. The two generals clashed in a fierce contest of strength and skill. How was the battle? A eulogy testifies to this, saying: With a light movement of heaven-reaching hands, life and death revolve in cycles. Their movements had no fixed pattern; their shouts were like thunder in spring. One was so furious he wished to devour the other's head whole; the other was equally enraged, wishing to chop off the other's cheeks while they were still alive. They fought so fiercely that it seemed as if heaven and earth had turned dark, with no trace of the Three Talents left. Only then did they finally separate from each other.

话说邓九公与张山大战三十回合，邓九公战张山不下，邓婵玉在后阵，见父亲刀法渐乱，打马兜回，发手一石，把张山脸上打伤，几乎坠马，败进大营。邓九公父女掌得胜鼓进城，入相府报功。不表。

Now, Deng Jiugong and Zhang Shan fought for thirty rounds. Deng Jiugong could not overcome Zhang Shan. Deng Chanyu in the rear lines saw that her father's sword technique was becoming increasingly disordered. She rode around quickly, threw a stone with all her might, striking Zhang Shan on the face and wounding him so badly he nearly fell from his horse. He retreated into the main camp in defeat. Strange flowers and rare herbs exuded a fragrant aroma; red apricot blossoms and emerald peaches displayed their vibrant beauty. Ancient trees by the cliff, with bark weathered by frost and rain for forty years; Cedar pines outside the gate, dark green in color, reaching thousands of feet into the sky. Pairs of wild cranes often danced in the gentle breeze at the cave's entrance; pairs of mountain birds sang on the branches during daylight hours. Clusters of yellow vines hung like ropes, and rows of willows with smoky green leaves seemed to dangle golden threads. A square pond gathered water; deep caves nestled against the mountain. The square pond, filled with still water, concealed a coiled dragon that had remained unchanged for a thousand years; The deep cave nestled against the mountain gave birth to immortal maidens who had attained the Dao after ten thousand years. Indeed, it was no less wondrous than Xuandu Mansion; truly a gate through which immortals entered and exited.

话说大鹏雕飞至山洞前，见一道人靠著洞边默坐。羽翼仙寻思：“不若将此道人抓来吃了，以为充饥，再作道理。”大鹏雕方欲扑来，道人用手一指，大鹏雕扑蹋的跌将下地来。道人探眉擦目，言曰：“你好没礼！你为何来伤我？”羽翼仙曰：“实不相瞒，我去伐西岐，腹中饿了，借你充饥，不知道友仙术精奇，得罪了！”道人曰：“你腹中饥了，问吾一声，我自然指你去。你如何就来害我？甚是非礼。也罢，我说与你知道：离此二百里，有一山，名为紫云崖，有三山五岳，四海道人，俱在那里赴香斋。你速去，恐迟了不便。”大鹏雕谢曰：“承教了。”把二翅飞起，霎时而至，即现仙形。只见高高下下，三五一攒，七八一处，都是四海三山道者赴斋。又见一童儿往来捧东西与众道人吃。羽翼仙曰：“道童请了！贫道是来赴斋的。”那童儿听说，“呀”的一声，答曰：“老师来早些方好，如今没有东西了。”羽翼仙曰：“偏我来就没有东西了？”道童答曰：“来早就有，来迟了，东西已尽与众位师父，安能再有？必至明日方可。”羽翼仙曰：“你拣人布施，我偏要吃！”二人嚷将起来。只见一位穿黄的道人向前问曰：“你为何事在此争论？”童儿曰：“此位师父来迟了，定要吃斋。那里有了，故此闲讲。”那道人曰：“童儿，你看可有面点心否？”童儿答曰：“点心还有；要斋却没有了。”羽翼仙曰：“就是点心也罢，快取将来。”那童儿忙把点心拿将来，递与羽翼仙。羽翼仙一连吃了七八十个。那童儿曰：“老师可吃了？”羽翼仙曰：“有，还吃得几个。”童儿又取十数个前来。羽翼仙共吃了一百零八个。正是： 妙法无边藏秘诀，今番捉住大鹏雕。

I was going to attack Xiqi and felt hungry in my stomach. I came here to borrow your body for food, but did not know that you possess such extraordinary Daoist skills—I have offended you!" The Daoist said, "If your stomach was hungry, you could have asked me. I would naturally have pointed the way for you." "Why did you come to harm me without asking?" "That is most impolite." "Never mind. I will tell you: two hundred li from here is a mountain called Ziyun Ya, where there are the Three Mountains and Five Great Mountains. Daoists from all over the four seas gather there for incense offerings." "Hurry to go there; it would be inconvenient if you delay." The giant Garuda bowed and said, "I thank you for the instruction." He spread his two wings and flew off. In an instant he arrived, revealing his Daoist form once more. Looking around, one could see clusters of three or five, groups of seven or eight—Daoists from the four seas and Three Mountains were all gathered there for the meal. He also saw a young boy going back and forth, serving food to the assembled Daoists. Yuyixian said, "Respectfully greeting you, Daoist apprentice!" "I am a poor Daoist who has come for the meal." Hearing this, the boy exclaimed, "Oh!" and replied, "Master, you had come earlier it would have been better. There is no food left now." Yuyixian said, "Is it because I came that there's nothing left?" The Daoist apprentice replied, "If you had come earlier, there would have been food. But now that it is late and the food has already been given to all my masters, how could there be any left?" "It will certainly not be available until tomorrow." Yuyixian said, "You choose whom to give food to, but I must eat now!" The two began to quarrel loudly. Just then, a Daoist dressed in yellow stepped forward and asked, "What is the matter that you are arguing here?" The boy said, "This master arrived late but insists on having a meal." "There is no food left, so we are just talking idly." The Daoist said to the boy, "Child, look and see if there is any noodles or snacks left?" The boy replied, "There are still some snacks; " but there is no vegetarian meal left." Yuyixian said, "Even a snack will do. Bring it quickly." The boy hurriedly took the snacks and handed them to Yuyixian. Yuyixian ate more than seventy or eighty of them in succession. The boy asked, "Master, have you had enough?" Yuyixian said, "Yes, I can still eat a few more." The boy took another ten or so and brought them over. Yuyixian ate a total of 108 snacks. It was indeed: "Limitless wondrous methods hide secret techniques; now at last the giant Garuda is captured."
