The Flaming Mountain

When the Earth Itself Was on Fire
🔥 Flaming Mountain ⏱️ 10 min read 💨 The Magic Fan

The road to the West was long, and through every kind of terrain imaginable — mountains higher than the clouds, rivers wider than the sea, deserts that burned like the floor of hell. But nothing prepared the pilgrims for what they found on the forty-third day of their journey.

Fire.

An entire mountain was burning. Flames rose hundreds of feet into the sky. The heat was so intense that birds fell from the air, their wings catching fire before they could escape. Nothing could survive near the mountain — and the road to the West ran straight through it.

The Ox Demon King

The fire was not natural. It was created by a demon — the Ox Demon King of the Flaming Mountain. He had been exiled to this region centuries ago, and in his anger, he had used forbidden magic to ignite the mountain. He claimed the land as his own, and no one dared cross.

As the pilgrims approached, Tripitaka saw the mountain and his face went pale. "There is no way through this," he said. "We must turn back."

Sun Wukong looked at the fire. It was impressive — magical fire, burning with colors that no natural flame could produce. But it was not beyond his power.

"Master, please wait here with Pigsy and Sandy. I will go to the mountain and find a way to extinguish this fire. We will not be stopped by a mere demon and his flames."

The Monkey King flew up to the peak of the mountain. There, he found the Ox Demon King sitting on a throne of black rock, laughing as the flames danced around him. The demon saw the Monkey King and sneered.

"So the Monkey King has come to play? I am the master of this fire, monkey. It burns at my command. You cannot extinguish it — no one can!"

The Monkey King challenged the Ox Demon King to battle. Their weapons clashed — the Golden Cudgel against the Ox Demon's iron staff. But the flames were all around them, and eventually the heat became too much. The Monkey King retreated, not defeated, but outmatched by the magical fire.

The Iron Bull Fan Princess

On his way back, Sun Wukong met a kind-looking woman on the road. She was the Iron Bull Fan Princess — so named because she carried a giant palm-leaf fan made of iron. She was the wife of the Ox Demon King, but she had long ago grown tired of her husband's evil ways.

"I can help you," she said. "My husband controls the fire with a magic fan. When he waves it, the fire blazes. When he stops, it dies down. But if you wave the fan in the opposite direction, it will blow the fire out completely."

The Monkey King saw an opportunity. He stole the fan from the princess — though it was enormous, as big as a wall — and flew back to the mountain. He stood at its peak and waved the fan.

The flames responded — but so did the fire. Rather than dying, the fire grew stronger. The Monkey King realized his mistake: the fan had to be waved in the right direction, with the right rhythm. He had gotten it wrong.

🪭 The Iron Fan (Bang Xiu Shan)

A palm-leaf fan made of solid iron, the size of a door. When waved forward, it creates the most powerful storms. When waved backward, it can extinguish the mightiest fire.

The flames grew so intense that the Monkey King was blown backward — not just back down the mountain, but all the way to the road where the pilgrims waited. His entire body was scorched. He landed at Tripitaka's feet, barely conscious.

The Second Attempt

Sun Wukong recovered and went back to the Iron Bull Fan Princess. This time, he was more careful. He studied the fan's patterns, learned the correct way to hold it, the correct direction to wave it. He even practiced with the princess until he understood it perfectly.

Then he returned to the mountain.

Standing at the peak, the Monkey King gripped the fan with both hands. He took a deep breath. And then, with a single, precise wave — in the correct direction, at the correct angle — he activated the fan's true power.

A massive wind blew from the fan. It swept across the mountain and collided with the flames. The fire — all of it, everywhere — went out. The mountain, which had been burning for centuries, went dark. The rocks cooled. The air became breathable.

"The fire is out! I can see the road on the other side!"

The Ox Demon King, seeing his power destroyed, fled. The Monkey King did not pursue him — the fire was gone, and that was what mattered. The pilgrimage could continue.

After the Fire

When the pilgrims crossed the mountain, they found the path clear. The rocks were still black from centuries of burning, but the fire was truly gone. The Monkey King had done it.

Pigsy, who had once been married to the Iron Bull Fan Princess (long story — don't ask), was sent to return the fan to her. He did so reluctantly, and only because the alternative was worse.

The pilgrims continued westward. They had passed through fire and survived. But more challenges awaited — because the road to the West was never easy, and the demons were always watching.
