Chapter 69: Kong Xuan's Troops Block Jinji Ling Pass

诗曰： 伐罪吊民诛独夫，西周原应玉虚符。自无血战成功易，岂有纷争立业殊。孔雀逆天皆孟浪，金鸡阻路尽支吾。休言伎俩参玄妙，总有西方接引徒。

The poem says: To punish criminals and relieve the people by 诛 ing a tyrant, the Western Zhou dynasty originally corresponded to the Jade Xufu talisman. Since there was no bloody battle, success came easily; how could there be contention or distinctive achievements? Peacocks defying heaven are all reckless; golden chickens blocking the way merely stall and evade. Do not speak of tricks that partake in the profound; there will always be disciples from the West to guide and lead.

话说孔宣人马出关，至金鸡岭，探马报人中军：“前有周兵在岭下，请令定夺。”孔宣令：“在领上安下营寨，阻住咽喉之路，使周兵不能前进。”不题。只见子牙人马正行，哨马报入中军：“禀上元帅：前有成汤大队人马住在岭上。”子牙传令：“安营。”升帐坐下，自思：“三十六路人马俱完，怎么又有这枝兵来？”子牙沉思，搯指算来：“连张山是三十五路，连此一路方是三十六路。此事必又费手。”

It is said that Kong Xuan's troops left the pass and arrived at Jinji Ling. A scout reported to the vanguard: "There are Western Zhou forces ahead below the ridge; please give orders for action." Kong Xuan gave orders: "Set up a camp on the ridge, block the vital pass, and prevent the Zhou forces from advancing." No further mention. Just then, Zi Ya's troops were marching forward when a scout reported to the vanguard: "Reporting to Commander-in-Chief: ahead there is a large force of Cheng Tang stationed on the ridge." Zi Ya gave orders: "Set up camp." He entered the tent and sat down, pondering to himself: "All thirty-six divisions of troops are already in place; how come there is yet another force coming?" Zi Ya pondered deeply, calculating with his fingers: "Including Zhang Shan makes thirty-five divisions; adding this one division brings the total to exactly thirty-six. This matter will surely require more effort."

且说孔宣在岭上止住了三日，子牙大兵已到。忙传令问：“谁人去周营见头阵走一遭？”有先行官陈庚出位应曰：“末将愿先见头阵。”孔宣许之。陈庚上马下岭，至周营搦战。探马报入中军。子牙问左右：“谁去见此头阵？”有先行官黄天化应曰：“愿往。”子牙分付曰：“务要小心。”黄天化答曰：“不必嘱咐。”忙上了玉麒麟出营。看见来将，手提方天戟大呼曰：“反贼何人？”黄天化答曰：“吾非反贼，乃奉天征讨扫荡成汤天宝大元帅麾下，正印先行官黄天化是也。你乃何人？也通个名来。录功簿上好记你的首级。”陈庚大怒：“量你鸡犬小辈，敢与天朝元宰相拒哉？”纵马摇戟，直取黄天化。天化手中双锤赴面交还。麟马往来，锤戟并举。有赞为证，赞曰： 二将阵前势无比，颠开战马定生死。盘旋铁骑眼中花，展动旗旛龙摆尾。银锤发手没遮拦，戟刺咽喉蛇信起。自来也见将军战，不似今番无底止。

Meanwhile, Kong Xuan had halted on the ridge for three days when Zi Ya's main force arrived. He quickly gave orders and asked: "Who will go to the Zhou camp and confront the vanguard?" A forward officer named Chen Geng stepped forward and replied: "I, your humble general, am willing to go first against the vanguard." Kong Xuan approved. Chen Geng mounted his horse, descended the ridge, and arrived at the Zhou camp to challenge for battle. A scout reported into the vanguard. Zi Ya asked his attendants: "Who will go and confront this vanguard?" A forward officer named Huang Tianhua stepped forward and said: "I am willing to go." Zi Ya instructed him, saying: "You must be careful at all costs." Huang Tianhua replied: "There is no need to give further instructions." He quickly mounted his white qilin and rode out of the camp. Seeing the approaching general, he raised his Fang Tian spear and shouted: "Who is this rebel?" Huang Tianhua replied: "I am not a rebel, but the official forward officer Huang Tianhua under the command of Commander-in-Chief Tianbaoda, who is commissioned by heaven to campaign and purge the Cheng Tang forces." Who are you? Speak your name as well. "So that I may record your head in the register of merit." Chen Geng became furious and said: "How dare you, a mere insignificant underling, oppose the chief minister of heaven's dynasty?" He urged his horse forward, brandished his spear, and charged straight at Huang Tianhua. Tianhua met the attack with his twin hammers in hand. The qilin horses dashed back and forth, while hammers and spears clashed together. There is a eulogy to attest: The eulogist says: The two generals on the battlefield are incomparable; they decide life and death as their horses gallop. Circling iron steeds dazzle the eyes like flowers; banners wave like a dragon's tail in motion. Silver hammers strike without obstruction, spear thrusts at the throat like a snake strikes. Though I have seen generals fight before, never has there been a battle as endless and fierce as this one.

麟马交还，大战有三十回合，黄天化掩一枪便走。陈庚不知好歹，随后赶去。黄天化闻得脑后鸾铃响，挂了双锤，取火龙标掌在手中，回手一标。正是： 金标发出神光现，断送无常死不知。

The qilin steeds clashed repeatedly; the two generals fought for thirty rounds, when Huang Tianhua suddenly feigned a spear thrust and retreated. Chen Geng did not discern the trick and pursued him immediately. Huang Tianhua heard the sound of a phoenix bell behind him, dropped his twin hammers, took out a Fire Dragon dart in his hand, and threw it backward with one swift motion. Indeed: The golden dart emits divine light; death comes suddenly without warning.

话说黄天化回手一标，将陈庚打下马来，兜回马取了首级，掌鼓进营，来见子牙。子牙问：“出阵如何？”黄天化答曰：“末将托元帅洪福，标取了陈庚首级。”子牙大喜，上黄天化首功。子牙方才举笔向砚台上捵墨，不觉笔头吊将下来。子牙半晌不言，从新再取笔，上了黄天化头一功。──此是黄天化只得首功一次，故有此警报。

It is said that Huang Tianhua, with a backward throw of the dart, struck Chen Geng off his horse. He wheeled his horse around, beheaded him, beat the drum to announce victory, and returned to camp to report to Zi Ya. Zi Ya asked: "How did your sortie go?" Huang Tianhua replied: "By the great fortune of Commander-in-Chief, I have taken Chen Geng's head with a dart." Zi Ya was greatly pleased and awarded Huang Tianhua the highest merit for his achievement. Just as Zi Ya picked up his brush to dip it into the inkstone, he suddenly felt the tip of the brush fall off. Zi Ya remained silent for a moment before picking up another brush and once again recorded Huang Tianhua's achievement as the top merit. ──This was because this was the only time Huang Tianhua received a head award, hence this warning occurred.

且说报马报入孔宣营中：“禀元帅：陈庚失机，被黄天化斩了首级，号令辕门。”孔宣笑曰：“陈庚自己无能，死不足惜。”全不在意。次日，又是孙合出马，至周营搦战。子牙传令：“谁去走一遭？”有武吉应曰：“弟子愿往。”子牙许之。武吉出营，见一员将官，金甲红袍，黄马大刀，飞临阵前，大呼曰：“来者何人？”武吉曰：“吾乃姜元帅门下右哨先行官武吉是也。”孙合笑曰：“姜尚乃是一渔翁，你乃是一个樵子。你师徒二人正是一轴画图──‘渔樵问答’。”武吉大怒曰：“匹夫无理！焉敢以言语戏吾！”切齿咬牙，举枪分心就刺。孙合手中刀急架忙迎。两马交锋，一场恶杀。大战有三十回合，未分胜负，武吉掩一枪便走，诈败而逃。孙合见武吉败走，知是樵子出身，料有何能，随后赶来。──不知子牙在磻溪传武吉条枪，有神出鬼没之妙。武吉已知孙合赶来，把马一兜，那马停了一步；孙合马来得太速，一撞个满怀，早被武吉这回马枪挑下马来，取了首级，掌鼓进营，见子牙报功。子牙大喜，上了武吉的功。就把哪吒激得抓耳挠腮，恨不得要出营厮杀。且说报马报入成汤营里：“启元帅：孙合失机，被武吉回马枪挑下，枭去首级，号令辕门，请令定夺。”孔宣听报，谓左右曰：“吾今奉诏征讨，尔等随军立功，不期连折二阵，使吾心中不悦。今日谁去见阵走一遭，为国立功？”傍有五军救应使高继能曰：“末将愿往。”孔宣分付曰：“务要小心。”高继能上马提枪，至营前讨战。哨马报入中军。傍有哪吒忙应声曰：“弟子愿往。”子牙许之。哪吒登风火轮，前有一对红旗，如风卷火云，飞奔前来。高继能大呼曰：“哪吒慢来！”哪吒大喜曰：“既知吾名，何不早早下马受死？”高继能对哪吒大笑曰：“闻你道术过人，一般今日也会得你著。”哪吒曰：“你且通名来，功劳簿上好记你的首级。”高继能大怒，使开枪分心刺来。哪吒火尖枪急速忙迎。轮马盘旋，双枪齐举，这场战非是等闲，怎见得，有赞为证，赞曰： 二将交锋在战场，四肢臂膊望空忙。这一个丹心要保真明主；那一个赤胆还扶殷纣王。哪吒要成千载业；继能为主立家邦。古来有福摧无福，有道该兴无道亡。

Meanwhile, a scout reported into Kong Xuan's camp: "Reporting to Commander-in-Chief: Chen Geng lost his chance and was beheaded by Huang Tianhua; the head is now displayed at the 辕门." Kong Xuan laughed and said: "Chen Geng himself was incompetent; his death is not worth regretting." He paid no attention to it at all. The next day, Sun He rode out again and arrived at the Zhou camp for a challenge. Zi Ya gave orders: "Who will go to meet him?" Wu Ji stepped forward and said: "Disciple is willing to go." Zi Ya approved. Wu Ji rode out of the camp and saw a general, clad in golden armor and red robes, riding a yellow horse with a large saber, who galloped to the front line and shouted: "Who dares come forth?" Wu Ji replied: "I am Wu Ji, the right vanguard officer under Commander-in-Chief Jiang." Sun He laughed and said: "Jiang Shang is merely a fisherman, and you are but a woodcutter. The two of you, master and disciple, are exactly like one painting—'Fisherman and Woodcutter in Dialogue.'" Wu Ji became furious and said: "You impudent fool!" How dare you mock me with words!" He gritted his teeth, raised his spear, and lunged straight at Sun He's chest. Sun He quickly raised his saber to block the attack. The two horses clashed, and a fierce battle ensued. They fought for thirty rounds without determining the victor; Wu Ji suddenly feigned a spear strike and retreated, pretending to be defeated. Sun He saw Wu Ji retreating in defeat, knowing he was a woodcutter by birth, and assumed he had no real ability. So Sun He pursued him immediately. ──Unbeknownst to him, Zi Ya had taught Wu Ji a special spear technique at Banxi, one of divine and ghostly subtlety. Wu Ji already knew that Sun He was pursuing him, so he pulled back on the reins; his horse took one step and stopped. Sun He's horse came too fast, and he crashed straight into Wu Ji. Before he could react, Wu Ji struck with a rear spear thrust, sending Sun He tumbling off his horse. Wu Ji beheaded him, beat the war drum to announce victory, returned to camp, and reported his achievement to Zi Ya. Zi Ya was overjoyed and recorded merit for Wu Ji. This greatly agitated Nezha, who scratched his ears and rubbed his cheeks in frustration, wishing he could rush out of camp to join the battle. Meanwhile, a scout reported into the Cheng Tang camp: "Reporting to Commander-in-Chief: Sun He lost his chance and was pierced by Wu Ji's rear spear thrust. His head has been severed and displayed at the 辕门; please give orders." Kong Xuan, upon hearing the report, said to his attendants: "I have now been commissioned by imperial decree to campaign. You all followed me and sought merit, yet unexpectedly we lost two battles in succession, which greatly displeases me." Who among you will go forth today to confront the enemy and establish a feat for the country?" A nearby officer, Gao Jinei of the Five Army Relief Command, stepped forward and said: "I, your humble general, volunteer to go." Kong Xuan instructed him: "You must be cautious at all costs." Gao Jinei mounted his horse, raised his spear, and went to the front of the camp for battle. A scout reported into the vanguard of the Zhou forces. Nezha, nearby, quickly stepped forward and said: "Disciple is willing to go." Zi Ya approved. Nezha mounted his Fenghuo Lun, with a pair of red flags fluttering ahead like wind-driven fire clouds, and rushed forward. Gao Jinei shouted: "Nezha, hold on!" Nezha joyfully replied: "Since you know my name, why not dismount and die early?" Gao Jinei laughed at Nezha and said: "I've heard your magical arts surpass others, but today I shall surely catch you off guard." Nezha replied: "Speak your name first; so that I may record it in the register of merit along with your head." Gao Jinei became furious and lunged forward, thrusting his spear straight at Nezha's chest. Nezha quickly raised his Huojian Spear to meet the attack. The two generals circled each other on horseback, both raising their spears. This battle was no ordinary one; how can it be described? A eulogist attests to this with a verse: Two generals clash on the battlefield, their limbs and arms moving frantically through empty air. One is filled with loyal heart to protect the true and wise ruler; The other, with a crimson 胆 e, still supports King Yin Zhou. Nezha seeks to accomplish an eternal feat; Jinei wishes to establish a state for his lord. Since ancient times, fortune crushes misfortune; where there is virtue, it shall flourish, and where there is none, it must perish.

高继能大战哪吒，恐哪吒先下手，高继能掩一枪便走。哪吒自思：“吾此来定要成功！”那里肯舍？随手取乾坤圈望空中祭起。高继能的蜈蜂袋未及放开来，不意哪吒的圈来得快，一圈正打中肩窝，伏鞍而逃。哪吒为不得全功，心下懊恼，回营见子牙曰：“弟子未得全功，请令定夺。”子牙上了哪吒的功。且说高继能被哪吒打伤，败进营来见孔宣，具言前事。孔宣不语，取些丹药与继能敷贴，立时全愈。

Gao Jinei engaged Nezha in fierce battle; fearing that Nezha would strike first, Gao suddenly feigned a spear attack and retreated. Nezha thought to himself: "I must achieve success this time!" How could he let it go? He immediately took out his Qiankun Ring and summoned it into the air. Before Gao Jinei could even open his scorpion bag, unexpectedly Nezha's ring came too fast. It struck precisely at the hollow of his shoulder, and he fell from his horse in retreat. Nezha was upset that he had not achieved complete success, and returned to the camp to report to Zi Ya: "Disciple did not achieve full merit; please give orders." Zi Ya recorded merit for Nezha. Meanwhile, Gao Jinei, having been wounded by Nezha and defeated, returned to the camp and reported everything that had happened. Kong Xuan said nothing, took some medicinal pills for Gao Jinei to apply, and immediately he was fully healed.

孔宣次日命中军点炮，自领大队人马，亲临阵前，对旗门官将曰：“请你主将答话。”探马报入中军：“孔宣请元帅答话。”子牙传令：“摆八健将出营。”大红宝纛旗展处，子牙左右有四个先行官与众门徒，雁翅排开。子牙乘四不相至阵前，看孔宣来历大不相同。怎见得，有赞为证，赞曰： 身似黄金映火，一笼盔甲鲜明。大刀红马势峥嵘，五道光华色映。曾见开天辟地，又见出日月星辰。一灵道德最根深，他与西方有分。

The next day, Kong Xuan ordered the central army to prepare for battle. He personally led a large force and arrived at the front line, where he addressed the flag gate officer: "Please ask your general to respond." A scout galloped into the central camp and reported: "Kong Xuan requests a response from the Grand General." Zi Ya gave orders: "Have the Eight Brave Generals prepare to leave the camp." With the large red treasure-standard flag unfurled, on either side of Zi Ya stood four vanguard officers and his disciples, arranged like the wings of a wild goose. Zi Ya rode on Si Bu Xiang to the front line and observed that Kong Xuan was quite different from any general he had encountered before. How so? A eulogy serves as evidence, which says: His body gleamed like golden fire; his armor and helmet were radiant and bright. With a great sword in hand, riding a red horse with imposing presence, five beams of light radiated around him. He had witnessed the opening of heaven and earth; he had also seen the rising of sun, moon, and stars. His spiritual virtue was deeply rooted in morality; he was destined to be connected with the West.

子牙看孔宣背后有五道光华，──按青、黄、赤、白、黑。子牙心下疑惑。孔宣见子牙自来，将马一拎，来至军前，问曰：“来者莫非姜子牙么？”子牙曰：“然也。”孔宣问曰：“你原是殷臣，为何造反，妄自称王，会合诸侯，逆天欺心，不守本土？吾今奉诏征讨，汝好好退兵，敬守臣节，可保家国；若半字迟延，吾定削平西土，那时悔之晚矣。”子牙曰：“天命无常，惟有德者居之。昔帝尧有子丹朱不肖，让位与舜。舜帝有子商均亦不肖，让位与禹。禹有子启贤，能继父志，禹尊禅让，复让与益。天下之朝觐讼狱，不之益而之启。再后传之桀。桀王无道，成汤伐夏而有天下。今传之纣。纣王今淫酗肆虐，秽德彰闻，天怒民怨，四海鼎沸。德在我周，恭行天之罚。将军何不顺天以归我周，共罚独夫也？”孔宣曰：“你以下伐上，反不为逆天，乃架此一段污秽之言，惑乱民心，借此造反，拒逆天兵，情殊可恨！”纵马舞刀来取。子牙后有洪锦走马奔来，大呼：“孔宣不得无礼！吾来也！”孔宣见洪锦走马而至，孔宣大骂：“逆贼！你还敢来见我！”洪锦曰：“天下八百诸侯俱已归周，料你一个忠臣，也不能济得甚事。”孔宣大怒，摇枪直取。二马交兵，未及数合，洪锦将旗门遁往下一戳，把刀往下一分，那旗化为一门。洪锦方欲进门，孔宣大笑曰：“米粒之珠，有何光彩？”孔宣兜回马，把左边黄光往下一刷，将洪锦刷去，毫无影响，就如沙灰投入大海之中，止见一匹空马。子牙左右大小将官俱目瞪口呆。孔宣复纵马来取子牙。子牙手中剑急架相迎。傍有邓九公走马来助阵。子牙大战十五六合。子牙祭打神鞭打孔宣，那鞭已落在孔宣红光中去了，似石投水。子牙大惊，忙传令鸣金。两边各归营寨。且说子牙升帐，坐下沉吟，想：“此人后有五道光华，按有五行之状；今将洪锦摄去，不知凶吉，如之奈何？”子牙自思：“不若乘孔宣得胜，今夜去劫他的营，且胜他一阵，再作区处。”子牙令哪吒：“你今夜去劫孔宣的大辕门；黄天化，你去劫他左营；雷震子，你可去劫他右营；先挫动他军威，然后用计破他，必然成功。”三人领令去讫。且说孔宣得胜进营，将后面五色光华一抖，只见洪锦昏迷睡于地下。孔宣分付左右，将洪锦监在后营，收了打神鞭，正欲退后营，只见一阵大风，将帅旗连卷三四卷。孔宣大惊，搯指一算，早已知其就里，忙唤高继能分付：“你在左营门埋伏；周信，你在右营门埋伏。今夜姜子牙要来劫吾营寨。我正要他来，只可惜姜尚不曾亲来！”且说姜子牙营中三路兵暗暗上岭。将近二更，一声炮响，三路兵呐喊

Zi Ya observed that behind Kong Xuan were five beams of light—green, yellow, red, white, and black. Zi Ya felt puzzled in his heart. Kong Xuan, seeing Zi Ya approaching personally, pulled up his horse and rode to the front of the army, asking: "Are you not Jiang Ziya?" Zi Ya said: "That is correct." Kong Xuan asked: "You were originally a minister of Yin. Why have you rebelled, falsely claiming kingship, gathering feudal lords, defying heaven and deceiving your conscience, abandoning your native land?" "I am now carrying out the imperial decree to campaign against you. If you withdraw your troops and remain loyal as a subject, you may preserve your family and state; " if there is even the slightest delay, I shall surely level the western lands. By then, it will be too late to regret." Zi Ya said: "Heaven's mandate is not constant; only those with virtue may possess it. In the past, Emperor Yao had a son named Dan Zhu who was unworthy, so he passed his position to Shun. Emperor Shun also had a son named Shang Jun, who was likewise unworthy, so the throne was passed to Yu. Yu had a son named Qi, who was virtuous and capable of continuing his father's legacy. However, Yu honored the tradition of abdication and passed the throne to Yi instead. The people throughout the land came to Qi for audiences, lawsuits, and justice, not to Yi but to Qi. Later it was passed on to Jie. King Jie was tyrannical, and so Cheng Tang attacked Xia and took control of the world. Now it has passed to Zhou. King Zhou is now indulging in debauchery, drinking excessively, and committing atrocities; his corrupt virtue has become widely known. Heaven is angry and the people resentful, causing turmoil across all four seas. Virtue now rests with our Zhou dynasty, which respectfully executes heaven's punishment. "Why does General not follow the will of Heaven and submit to our Zhou, joining together to punish this tyrant?" " Kong Xuan replied: "You attack the superior with the inferior, yet you do not consider this defying Heaven. Instead, you fabricate these disgraceful words to confuse the people's hearts and use them as an excuse for rebellion, resisting Heaven's army. Your actions are especially despicable!" With a surge of his horse and a whirling sword, he charged forward to attack. Behind Zi Ya, Hong Jin galloped up shouting: "Kong Xuan, you must not be disrespectful! Here I come!" Kong Xuan saw Hong Jin galloping toward him and shouted angrily: "Rebellious traitor! How dare you come before me!" Hong Jin said: "Eight hundred feudal lords throughout the land have already submitted to Zhou. Even if you are a loyal minister, I suppose you cannot accomplish much." Kong Xuan became furious and brandished his spear straight for Hong Jin. The two horses clashed in battle, but before a few exchanges could take place, Hong Jin suddenly thrust his flag gate downward and slashed the sword sideways. The banner transformed into a gate. Just as Hong Jin was about to enter the gate, Kong Xuan laughed and said: "A tiny grain of rice—what brilliance can it have?" Kong Xuan wheeled his horse around, and with a sweep of the yellow light from his left side, he brushed Hong Jin away. There was no effect at all—it was as if sand or dust had been thrown into the sea; only an empty horse remained visible. The officers and generals on both sides of Zi Ya were stunned, their eyes wide and mouths agape. Kong Xuan then rode forward again to attack Zi Ya. Zi Ya quickly raised his sword in defense. At that moment, Deng Jiugong galloped over to assist in the battle. Zi Ya engaged in fierce combat for fifteen rounds of exchanges. Zi Ya summoned the God-Beating Whip to strike Kong Xuan, but the whip had already fallen into Kong Xuan's red light and vanished like a stone sinking in water. Zi Ya was greatly alarmed and quickly gave orders to sound the retreat gong. Both sides returned to their respective camps. Meanwhile, Zi Ya entered his tent and sat in deep thought, pondering: "This man is surrounded by five beams of light, corresponding to the Five Elements; now Hong Jin has been taken away, and I do not know whether it bodes good or ill. What should I do?" Zi Ya thought to himself: "It would be better if I take advantage of Kong Xuan's recent victory and launch a surprise attack on his camp tonight. If I can win this battle, then I will decide what to do next." Zi Ya ordered Nezha: "Tonight you are to raid Kong Xuan's main gate; Huang Tianhua, you will attack his left camp; Lei Zhenzi, you are to raid the right camp; first shake his army's morale, and then use a strategy to defeat him. This will surely succeed." The three received their orders and departed accordingly. Meanwhile, Kong Xuan returned to his camp after the victory. He shook off the five-colored light behind him and saw Hong Jin lying unconscious on the ground. lando Kong Xuan gave orders to his attendants, who took Hong Jin and confined him in the rear camp. Kong Xuan had just retrieved the God-Beating Whip and was about to return to the rear quarters when suddenly a strong wind arose, swirling the general's banner back and forth several times. Kong Xuan was greatly startled, quickly calculated with his fingers, and immediately understood the situation. He hurriedly called for Gao Jinei and gave orders: "You are to lie in ambush at the left camp gate; Zhou Xin, you will hide in ambush at the right camp gate. Tonight, Jiang Ziya is going to raid our camp. I was just hoping he would come—but it's a pity that Jiang Shang himself did not come in person!" Meanwhile, the three divisions of troops from Jiang Ziya's camp quietly ascended the hill. Approaching the second watch of the night, a cannon shot rang out and the three divisions shouted in unison.

一声，杀进辕门。哪吒踏轮摇枪，冲开营门，杀至中营而来。孔宣独坐帐中，不慌不忙，上了马迎来，大笑曰：“哪吒，你今番劫营，定然遭擒，再休想前番取胜也！”哪吒也不知孔宣的利害，大怒，骂曰：“今日定拏你成功！”举枪来战，杀在中军，难解难分。雷震子飞在空中，冲开右营；周信大战雷震子。雷震子展动风雷二翅，飞在空中，是上三路，又是夤夜间，观看不甚明白，周信被雷震子一棍刷将下来，正中顶门，打得脑浆迸出，死于非命。雷震子飞至中营，见哪吒大战孔宣，雷震子大喝一声，如霹雳交加，孔宣将黄光望上一撒，先拏了雷震子。哪吒见如此利害，方欲抽身，又被孔宣把白光一刷，连哪吒撒去，不知去向。且说黄天化只听得杀声大作，不察虚实，催开玉麒麟，冲进左营，忽听炮响，高继能一马当先，夤夜交兵，更不答话，麟马相交，枪锤并举。好黄天化！两柄锤只打的枪尖生烈焰，杀气透心寒。二将乃是夜战，况黄天化两柄锤似流星不落地，来往不沾尘。高继能见如此了得，掩一枪，拨马就走。黄天化催开玉麒麟赶来。高继能展开蜈蜂袋，──夜间，黄天化该如此，──那蜈蜂卷将来，成堆成团而至，一似飞蝗。黄天化用两柄锤遮挡，不防蜈蜂把玉麒麟的眼叮了一下，那麒麟叫了一声，使蹄站立，前蹄直竖，黄天化坐不住鞍鞽，撞下地来，早被高继能一枪正中胁下，死于非命。一魂往封神台去了。可怜下山大破四天王，不曾取成汤寸土。正是： 功名未遂身先死，早至台中等候封。

Gao Jinei opened his scorpion bag—since it was nighttime, Huang Tianhua should have been prepared—but the scorpions surged forward in clusters and groups, like swarms of flying locusts. Huang Tianhua tried to block with his twin hammers, but he did not expect the scorpions to sting the eye of his Jade Qilin. The qilin let out a cry and reared up on its hind legs, causing Huang Tianhua to fall from the saddle. Before he could recover, Gao Jinei struck him in the side with a spear, killing him by unnatural means. His soul departed for the God-Enthronement Platform. Alas, he had descended from the mountain to defeat the Four Heavenly Kings and yet failed to conquer even an inch of Cheng Tang's territory. Indeed: Unfulfilled in fame, he died before achieving success; early he arrived at the platform to await his enshrinement.

The three brothers, the two uncles, and all the generals wept bitterly. Wu Chengwang was as if drunk with sorrow. Ziya remained puzzled and silent. Nangong Shi said, "General Huang need not grieve so." Your son gave his life for the country and will be recorded in history for a thousand years. Now that Gao Jinei has this left-handed technique of scorpion swarms, why does not the general invite Chong Cheng and Chong Heihu from Chongcheng? He is skilled in countering such left-handed techniques." Huang Feihu, hearing this suggestion, went to Ziya's tent and said, "Your humble servant will go to Chongcheng and invite Chong Heihu to come and defeat this bandit, so as to avenge my son." It turned out that the fork-wielding general and the claw-wielding one were fighting together against the hammer-wielding general. After a while, it became clear that the hammer-wielding and fork-wielding generals were now fighting together against the claw-wielding general. The three generals laughed heartily as they fought. Huang Feihu, seated on his steed, mused to himself, "Why are these three men treating battle as a game? I should ride forward and ask them the truth." Huang Feihu rode up to face them. He saw the fork-wielding general, who upon seeing Huang Feihu's phoenix-like eyes and thick eyebrows, his royal attire, and his five-colored divine ox, shouted to his companions: "My two worthy younger brothers, cease your weapons for a moment!" The other two quickly stopped fighting. The general on horseback bowed slightly and asked, "Are you perhaps General Wu Chengwang?" Huang Feihu replied, "That is none other than I. I do not know who the three of you generals are." Upon hearing this, the three generals dismounted and fell to their knees in reverence. Huang Feihu hurriedly dismounted his steed and returned the salute with utmost respect. After bowing, the three generals said, "Great King, we recognized you just now by your appearance and bearing, which matched what we had heard of you in days past. What a rare fortune it is to meet you here today!" They invited him up the mountain, and upon entering the central command tent, they took their seats according to guest-host etiquette. Huang Feihu asked, "Earlier, I saw you three brothers fighting fiercely—what was the reason?" The three of them bowed slightly and said, "My three brothers and I were here having a meal with nothing to do, so we pretended to fight for fun. We did not expect to accidentally violate your banner and failed to avoid you in time." After Huang Feihu had also politely declined their apologies, he asked, "May I ask for your three names and surnames?" The three bowed slightly and said, "Your humble servant's surname is Wen, given name Pin; this one surnamed Cui, given name Ying; and this one surnamed Jiang, given name Xiong." ──This chapter is precisely the meeting of the "Five Great Mountains": Wen Pin was from the Western Mountain; Cui Ying was from the Central Mountain; Jiang Xiong was from the Northern Mountain; and Huang Feihu was from the Eastern Mountain; Chong Heihu was from the Southern Mountain. I beg Great King's forgiveness." Huang Feihu said, "To have come uninvited to your headquarters and be granted the honor of meeting you in person is truly a privilege for your humble servant in three lifetimes." After exchanging courtesies, they sat down according to guest-host protocol. After mutual expressions of comfort and courtesy were exchanged, Wen Pin recounted Huang Feihu's story in detail.
