Chapter 65: Yinjiao Receives a Plow and Hoe at Qishan Mountain

诗曰： 鼙鼓频催日已西，殷郊此日受犁锄。翻天有印皆沦落，离地无旗孰可栖。 空负肝肠空自费，浪留名节浪为题。可怜二子俱如誓，气化清风魂伴泥。

The poem says: The war drums frequently urge as the sun has already set; on this day, Yinjiao receives a plow and hoe. Heaven-defying authority with seals all fall into decline; without flags to mark the land, where can one find a place to dwell? In vain does one bear loyalty and sincerity, in vain is it spent; in vain are reputation and virtue left behind, in vain do they become subjects of discussion. Pitifully, the two sons both kept their oaths as promised; their spirits transformed into clear winds and their souls accompanied by mud.

话说李靖大战罗宣，戟剑相交，犹如虎狼之状。李靖祭起按三十三天黄金宝塔，乃大叫曰：“罗宣！今日你难逃此难矣！”罗宣欲待脱身，怎脱此厄，只见此塔落将下来，如何存立！可怜！正是： 封神台上有坐位，道术通天难脱逃。

It is said that Li Jing engaged in a great battle with Luo Xuan; halberds and swords clashed, resembling the fierce confrontation of tigers and wolves. Li Jing raised up the golden pagoda of the thirty-three heavens and shouted loudly, "Luo Xuan!" "On this day, you cannot escape this calamity!" Luo Xuan wished to free himself but could not escape this disaster; he saw the pagoda falling down and had no way to stand firm! Pitiful! Indeed: On the Fengshen Altar there are seats prepared; even with divine arts reaching to heaven, escape is impossible.

话说黄金塔落将下来，正打在罗宣顶上，只打得脑浆迸流。──一灵已奔封神台去了。李靖收了宝塔，借土遁往西岐，时劾而至。到了相府前，有木吒看见父亲来至，忙报与子牙：“弟子父亲李靖等令。”燃灯对子牙曰：“乃是吾门人，曾为纣之总兵。”子牙闻之大喜，忙令相见毕。且说广成子见殷郊阻兵于此，子牙拜将又近，问燃灯曰：“老师，如今殷郊不得退，如之奈何？”燃灯曰：“番天印利害，除非取了玄都离地焰光旗，西方取了青莲宝色旗。如今止有了玉虚杏黄旗，殷郊如何伏得他，必先去取了此旗方可。”广成子曰：“弟子愿往玄都，见师伯走一遭。”燃灯曰：“你速去！”广成子借纵地金光法往玄都来，不一时来至八景宫玄都洞。真好景致！怎见得，有赞为证： 金碧辉煌，珠玉灿烂。菁葱婆娑，苍苔欲滴。仙鸾仙鹤成群，白鹿白猿作对。香烟缥缈冲霄汉，彩色氤氲绕碧空。雾隐楼台重叠叠，霞盘殿阁紫阴阴。祥光万道临福地，瑞气千条照洞门。大罗宫内金钟响，八景宫开玉磬鸣。开天辟地神仙府，才是玄都第一重。

It is said that as the golden pagoda fell down, it struck Luo Xuan precisely on his head, beating him so severely that his brains splattered. ──His soul had already rushed to the Fengshen Altar and departed. Li Jing retrieved his pagoda, used a soil 遁 (earth 遁) technique to head west toward Xi Qi, and arrived in an instant. When he arrived before the prime minister's residence, Mu Zha saw his father arrive and hurriedly reported to Ziya: "My master's father Li Jing is waiting for your command." Randel said to Ziya, "He is a disciple of mine and once served as the overall commander under Zhou." Ziya heard this and was greatly pleased; he promptly arranged for them to meet. Meanwhile, Guangchengzi saw that Yinjiao was blocking the troops here and that Ziya's appointment of a general had already drawn near. He asked Randel, "Master Teacher, now that Yinjiao cannot be driven back, what should we do?" Randel said, "The Fanti Seal is dangerous; unless one obtains the Flame Flag of Xudu's Earth and the Qinglian Baose Flag from the West. Now we only have the Yu Xu Xinghuang Flag; how can Yinjiao subdue him? We must first go and obtain this flag before it is possible." Guangchengzi said, "I am willing to go to Xudu and visit my senior master once." Randel said, "You must hurry!" Guangchengzi used the Zongdi Jinguang method to travel toward Xudu, and in no time he arrived at Xuandu Cave of the Eight Scenery Palace. What a beautiful view! How can this be seen? A verse testifies: Golden and jade-like brilliance, pearls and jade shining resplendently. Green moss sways gently; emerald moss seems about to drip. Mythical 鸾 and cranes gather in flocks, while white deer and white macaques appear in pairs. Incense smoke faintly rises to the heavens; colorful mists swirl around the azure sky. lø Mist veils towers and pavilions, layer upon layer; rosy clouds surround palaces and halls in a purple haze. Ten thousand beams of auspicious light descend upon the blessed land; thousands of strands of auspicious qi illuminate the cave entrance. Within Dluo Palace, golden bells ring out; at the Eight Scenery Palace, jade chimes resound as it opens. This is the immortal residence where heaven and earth were opened up; this is indeed the first level of Xudu.

话说广成子至玄都洞，不敢擅入，等候半晌，只见玄都大法师出来，广成子上前稽首，口称：“道兄，烦启老师，弟子求见。”玄都大法师至蒲团前启曰：“广成子至此，求见老师。”老子曰：“广成子不必著他进来，他来是要离地焰光旗；你将此旗付与他去罢。”玄都大法师随将旗付与广成子，曰：“老师分付，你去罢，不要进见了。”广成子感谢不尽，将旗高捧，离了玄都，迳至西岐，进了相府。子牙接见，拜了焰光旗。广成子又往西方极乐之乡来。纵金光，一日到了西方胜境，──比昆仑山大不相同。怎见得，有赞为证，赞曰： 宝焰金光映日明，异香奇彩更微精。七宝林中无穷景，八德池边落瑞璎。素品仙花人罕见，笙簧仙乐耳更清。西方胜界真堪羡，真乃莲花瓣里生。

It is said that when Guangchengzi arrived at Xuandu Cave, he dared not enter without permission and waited for a while. Soon the Great Master Xuandu came out; Guangchengzi stepped forward, bowed respectfully, and said, "Senior Daoist brother, I trouble you to inform my master teacher that your disciple wishes to see him." The Great Master Xuandu went before the cushion and reported, "Guangchengzi has arrived here and wishes to see my master teacher." Laozi said, "There is no need for Guangchengzi to be brought in; he has come for the Flame Flag of Earth. You may simply give him this flag." The Great Master Xuandu immediately handed the flag to Guangchengzi and said, "My master teacher has given instructions; you may go now. There is no need for an audience." Guangchengzi was deeply grateful, held the flag high in his hands, left Xudu, and went directly to Xi Qi, entering the prime minister's residence. Ziya received him, and they paid homage to the Flame Flag. Guangchengzi then went toward the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Using his golden light technique, he traveled a day's journey to reach this wondrous western land—completely different from Kunlun Mountain. How can this be described? A verse testifies: The golden light of the treasure flame shines brightly under the sun; strange fragrances and rare colors are even more refined. Endless sights lie within the Seven Treasures Grove, while auspicious pendants fall by the Eight Virtues Pool. Pure and rare immortal flowers are seldom seen; the flutes and zithers of celestial music bring even greater clarity to one's ears. The wondrous realm of the West is truly enviable, indeed born within a lotus petal.

话说广成子站立多时，见一童子出来，广成子曰：“那童子，烦你通报一声，说广成子相访。”只见童子进去，不一时，童子出来，道：“有请。”广成子见一道人，身高丈六，面皮黄色，头挽抓髻，向前稽首，分宾主坐下。道人曰：“道兄乃玉虚门下，久仰清风，无缘会晤；今幸至此，实三生有缘。”广成子谢曰：“弟子因犯杀戒，今被殷郊阻住子牙拜将日期，今特至此，求借青莲宝色旗，以破殷郊，好佐周王东征。”接引道人曰：“贫道西方乃清净无为，与贵道不同，以花开见我，我见其人，乃莲花之像，非东南两度之客。此旗恐惹红尘，不敢从命。”广成子曰：“道虽二门，其理合一。以人心合天道，岂得有两。南北东西共一家，难分彼此。如今周王是奉玉虚符命，应运而兴，东西南北，总在皇王水土之内。道兄怎言西方不与东南之教同。古语云：‘金丹舍利同仁义，三教元来是一家。’”接引道人曰：“道人言虽有理，只是青莲宝色旗染不得红尘。奈何！奈何！”二人正论之间，后边来了一位道人，乃是准提道人；打了稽首，同坐下。准提曰：“道兄此来，欲借青莲宝色旗，西岐山破殷郊；若论起来，此宝借不得。如今不同，亦自有说。”乃对接引道人曰：“前番我曾对道兄言过，东南两度，有三千丈红气冲空，与吾西方有缘；是我八德池中五百年花开之数。西方虽是极乐，其道何日得行于东南；不若借东南大教，兼行吾道，有何不可。况今广成子道兄又来，当得奉命。”接引道人听准提道人之言，随将青莲宝色旗付与广成子。广成子谢了二位道人，离西方望西岐而来。正是： 只为殷郊逢此厄，才往西方走一遭。

It is said that after standing there for a while, Guangchengzi saw a young boy come out. Guangchengzi said, "You child, please trouble you to announce once: Guangchengzi wishes to visit." Soon the boy went in. Not long after, the boy came out and said, "Please come in." Guangchengzi saw a Daoist priest who was six chi tall, had yellowish skin, and wore his hair in a topknot. The man bowed respectfully before him, and the two sat down as guest and host. The Daoist priest said, "Senior Daoist brother is a disciple of Yu Xu; I have long admired your virtue and reputation but had no opportunity to meet you; today we are fortunate to meet here—this is truly the result of three lifetimes of karmic connection." Guangchengzi replied with thanks, "Your disciple has violated the precept against killing; now Yinjiao is blocking Ziya's appointment of generals. I have come here especially to request borrowing the Qinglian Baose Flag in order to defeat Yinjiao and assist King Zhou in his eastern campaign." The Daoist Priest Jieyin said, "In the West where I dwell, we practice purity and non-action; this differs from your path. One must present a blooming flower to see me, and when I see such a person, they resemble a lotus—this is not someone who has come twice from the east or south. I fear this flag may bring worldly troubles and cannot comply with your request." Guangchengzi said, "Though the Dao divides into two schools, their principles are one. To unite human hearts with heavenly principles is not a matter of duality. The north, south, east, and west are one family; it is hard to distinguish between us and you. Now King Zhou has received the mandate of Yu Xu, rising in accordance with destiny; all directions—east, west, south, and north—are within the realm of His Majesty's land. Senior Daoist brother, how can you say that the West does not share the same teachings as the East and South? An old saying goes: 'Golden pills and Bodhi seeds are united in humanity and righteousness; the Three Teachings have always been one family.'" The Daoist Priest Jieyinh said, "Though your words are reasonable, the Qinglian Baose Flag cannot be tainted by worldly affairs. Alas! Alas!" While the two were discussing, a Daoist priest arrived from behind; it was none other than Zhunti Dao Ren. He bowed respectfully and sat down with them. Zhunti said, "Senior Daoist brother's visit is to borrow the Qinglian Baose Flag to break Yinjiao at Xi Qi Mountain; If we are to speak strictly, this treasure cannot be lent out. But now the situation is different; there is also a reason for it." He then said to Daoist Priest Jieyinyin, "Previously I once told you, Senior Daoist brother, that in the east and south there were two instances where red qi three thousand zhang high surged into the sky; this was connected with our Western Land. This corresponds to the number of times the flowers in my Eight Virtues Pool bloom every five hundred years. Though the West is a land of ultimate bliss, when will our Dao ever be practiced in the east and south; It would be better to borrow from the great teachings of the East and South and combine them with our path—what is there not to agree with? Moreover, now that Senior Daoist brother Guangchengzi has come again, the command should be granted." Daoist Priest Jieyinyin listened to Daoist Priest Zhunti's words and immediately handed the Qinglian Baose Flag over to Guangchengzi. Guangchengzi thanked the two Daoist priests, left the Western Land, and headed toward Xi Qi. Indeed: It was only because of Yinjiao's misfortune that he had to make a journey all the way to the West.

话说广成子离了西方，不一日来到西岐，进相府来见燃灯，将西方先不肯借旗，被准提道人说了方肯的话说了一遍。燃灯曰：“事好了！如今正南用离地焰光旗，东方用青莲宝色旗，中央用杏黄戊己旗，西方少素色云界旗，单让北方与殷郊走，方可治之。”广成子曰：“素色云界旗那里有？”众门人都想，想不起来。广成子不乐。众门人俱退，土行孙来到内里，对妻子邓婵玉说：“平空殷郊伐西岐，费了许多的事，如今还少素色云界旗，不知那里有？”只见龙吉公主在静室中听见，忙起身来问土行孙曰：“素色云界旗是我母亲那里有。此旗一名‘云界’，一名‘聚仙’，但赴瑶池会，将此旗拽起，群仙俱知道，即来赴瑶池胜会，故曰聚仙旗。此旗，别人去不得，须得南极仙翁方能借得来。”土行孙闻说，忙来至殿前，见燃灯道人，曰：“弟子回内室，与妻子商议，有龙吉公主听见。彼言此旗乃西王母处有，名日‘聚仙旗’。”燃灯方悟，随命广成子往昆仑山来。广成子纵金光至玉虚宫，立于麒麟崖。等候多时，有南极仙翁出来。广成子把殷郊的事说了一遍。南极仙翁曰：“我知道了。你且回去。”广成子回西岐。不表。且说南极仙翁即忙收拾，换了朝服，系了叮当玉佩，手执朝笏，离了玉虚宫，足踏祥云，飘飘荡荡，鹤驾先行引导。怎见得，有诗为证： 祥云托足上仙行，跨鹤乘鸾上玉京。福禄并称为寿曜，东南常自驻行旌。

It is said that Guangchengzi left the West and, in no time at all, arrived at Xi Qi. He entered the prime minister's residence to see Randel and recounted how the Western Land had initially refused to lend the flag but finally agreed after Daoist Priest Zhunti spoke up. Randel said, "The matter is settled! Now, the southern direction will use the Flame Flag of Earth, the eastern direction will use the Qinglian Baose Flag, and the central direction will use the Xinghuang Wuji Flag. The western direction lacks the White Cloud Boundary Flag; we must allow Yinjiao to retreat northward alone in order to deal with him." Guangchengzi asked, "Where can the White Cloud Boundary Flag be found?" All the disciples thought about it but could not recall. Guangchengzi was unhappy. All the disciples withdrew, and Tuxingsun came inside and said to his wife Deng Chanyu, "Out of nowhere, Yinjiao attacks Xi Qi; we have gone through so much trouble. Now we still lack the White Cloud Boundary Flag—no one knows where it can be found." Just then, Princess Longji, who was in a quiet room and overheard the conversation, hurriedly stood up and asked Tuxingsun, "The White Cloud Boundary Flag is at my mother's place. This flag is also known as the "Yunjie Flag" and the "Juxian Flag." Whenever a banquet at 瑶池 (Yaochi) is held, this flag is raised; all immortals will know about it immediately and come to attend the grand gathering at Yaochi. Hence, it is called the Juxian Flag. This flag cannot be obtained by anyone else; only Nanji Xianweng can borrow it." Tuxingsun, upon hearing this, hurried to the hall and saw Daoist Priest Randel. He said, "Your disciple returned to his private quarters and discussed it with his wife; Princess Longji overheard. She said this flag is at the Western Queen Mother's place, known as the 'Juxian Flag.'" Randel suddenly understood and immediately ordered Guangchengzi to go to Kunlun Mountain. Guangchengzi rode the golden light to Yu Xu Palace and stood at Qilin Cliff. After waiting for a long time, Old Man Nanji came out. Guangchengzi recounted the entire matter of Yinjiao. Old Man Nanji said, "I understand now. You may go back for now." Guangchengzi returned to Xi Qi. No further details are given. Meanwhile, Old Man Nanji hurriedly prepared himself, changed into court robes, fastened a jade pendent that jingled, held a court tablet in his hand, left Yu Xu Palace, stepped onto auspicious clouds, and floated gracefully through the sky with cranes leading the way. How can this be described? Here is a verse to testify: Auspicious clouds support his feet as the immortal ascends; he rides cranes and phoenixes toward Yu Jing. Fulu are jointly honored as Shou Yao, and he often resides in the southeast with his banners unfurled.

话说南极仙翁来到瑶池，落下云头，见朱门紧闭，玉佩无声；只见瑶池那些光景，甚是稀奇。怎见得，有赞为证，赞曰： 顶摩霄汉，脉插须弥。巧峰排列，怪石参差。悬崖下瑶草琪花，曲径傍紫芝香蕙。仙猿摘果入桃林，却似火焰烧金；白鹤栖松立枝头，浑如苍烟捧玉。彩凤双双，青鸾对对。彩凤双双，向日一鸣天下瑞；青鸾对对，迎风跃舞世间稀。又见黄邓邓琉璃瓦叠鸳鸯；明愰愰锦花砖铺玛瑙。东一行，西一行，尽是蕊宫珍阙；南一带，北一带，看不了宝阁琼楼。云光殿上长金霞，聚仙亭下生紫雾。正是：金阙堂中仙乐动，方知紫府是瑶池。

It is said that Old Man Nanji arrived at Yaochi, descended from the clouds, and saw the vermilion gates tightly shut with no sound from jade pendants; he saw that the scenery of Yaochi was most extraordinary. How can this be described? Let a verse testify: Its peak touches the heavens, its roots pierce Xumi Mountain. Graceful peaks are arranged in rows; strange rocks jut out unevenly. Under overhanging cliffs, jade grass and rare flowers hang down; winding paths run beside purple ginseng and fragrant orchids. Spiritual monkeys picking fruit in the peach grove, their fur glowing like flames of gold; white cranes perched on pine branches, looking as if they were holding jade in a wisp of blue mist. Colorful phoenixes fly in pairs; azure 鸾 birds appear in couples. Colorful phoenixes, flying in pairs, cry out toward the sun and bring auspiciousness to the world; Azure 鸾 birds, appearing in couples, leap and dance against the wind—rare treasures of this world. Further ahead, golden yellow glazed tiles overlap like mandarin ducks; brightly shining brocade-patterned bricks are paved with nacre. らい East a row, west a row, all are precious palaces of the Rui Palace; Southward and northward, one sees endless jade towers and qiong pavilions. Above the Yunguang Hall, golden dawn lingers; beneath the Ju Xian Pavilion, purple mist arises. Indeed: The immortal music resounds in the Golden Hall, and one realizes that Zifu is none other than Yaochi.

话说南极仙翁俯伏金阶，口称：“小臣南极仙翁奏闻金母：应运圣主，鸣凤岐山，仙临杀戒，垂象上天；因三教并谈，奉玉虚符命，按三百六十五度封神八部，雷、火、瘟、斗，群星列宿。今有玉虚副仙广成子门人殷郊，有负师命，逆天叛乱，杀害生灵，阻挠姜尚不能前往，恐误拜将日期。殷郊发誓，应在西岐而受犁锄之厄。今奉玉虚之命，特恳圣母，恩赐聚仙旗，下至西岐，治殷郊以应愿言。诚惶诚恐，稽首顿首。具疏小臣南极仙翁具奏。”俯伏少时，只听得仙乐一派。怎见得： 玉殿金门两扇开，乐声齐奏下瑶台。凤衔丹诏离天府，玉敕金书降下来。

It is said that Old Man Nanjī knelt on the golden steps and declared, "Your humble servant, Old Man Nanji, respectfully reports to Golden Mother: The divinely ordained sovereign has appeared; phoenixes cry out from Qi Mountain. Immortals have descended to enforce the law of killing, a sign bestowed by Heaven above; due to the convergence of the Three Teachings, I have received the decree from Yu Xu and am tasked with sealing the gods according to the 365 degrees of Heaven's order. The Eight Departments—Thunder, Fire, Plague, and War—along with all the stars and constellations shall be arranged accordingly." Now, there is Yinjiao, the disciple of Guangchengzi, a deputy immortal of Yu Xu. He has betrayed his master's command, rebelled against Heaven, killed innocent lives, and obstructed Jiang Shang from proceeding forward, which may delay the scheduled date for the gods to be sealed. Yinjiao has sworn that he shall suffer the calamity of being plowed with a hoe in Xi Qi. Now, I have been commanded by Yu Xu to humbly request the Holy Mother for mercy and grant me the Ju Xian Banner. I shall descend to Xi Qi to deal with Yinjiao as foretold. With utmost reverence and trepidation, I bow my head in deep respect. Submitted respectfully by the humble servant Nanji Xianweng." After kneeling for a short while, he heard a grand procession of immortal music. How can this be described: The jade hall's golden gates open wide, and the music resounds together from Youtai. Phoenixes carry red edicts away from Heaven's capital; jade decrees inscribed in gold descend from above.

话说南极仙翁俯伏玉阶，候降敕旨。只闻乐声隐隐，金门开处，有四对仙女高捧聚仙旗，付与南极仙翁，曰：“敕旨付南极仙翁：周武当有天下；纣王秽德彰闻，应当绝灭；正合天心。今特敕尔聚仙旗前去，以助周邦，毋得延缓，有亵仙宝。速往。钦哉！望阙谢恩。”南极仙翁谢恩毕，离了瑶池。正是： 周主洪基年八百，圣人金阙借旗来。

It is said that Old Man Nanjie knelt on the jade steps, waiting for the decree to be issued. He heard faint music, and as the golden gates opened, four pairs of immortal maidens appeared, holding up the Ju Xian Banner and handing it to Old Man Nanji. They said, "The decree is given to Old Man Nanji: King Wu of Zhou shall rule over all under Heaven; King Zhou's corrupt virtue has become widely known and he should be utterly destroyed; this is in harmony with Heaven's will. Now, we specially command you to take the Ju Xian Banner forward and assist the Zhou kingdom; do not delay, for it would be a disgrace to the treasures of immortals. Go quickly. Your decree is most honored! He gazed toward the palace and expressed his gratitude." After expressing his thanks, Old Man Nanji left Yaochi. Indeed: The Zhou sovereign's great foundation lasted eight hundred years; the sage borrowed a banner from the golden palace.

话说南极仙翁离了瑶池，迳至西岐。有杨戬报入相府。广成子焚香接敕，望阙谢恩毕。子牙迎接仙翁至殿中坐下，共言殷郊之事。仙翁曰：“子牙，吉辰将至，你等可速破了殷郊，我暂且告回。”众仙送仙翁回宫。燃灯曰：“今有聚仙旗，可以擒殷郊。只是还少两三位可助成功。”话犹未了，哪吒来报：“赤精子来至。”子牙迎至殿前。广成子曰：“我与道兄一样，遭此不肖弟子。”彼此嗟叹。又报：“文殊广法天尊来至。”见了子牙，口称：“恭喜！”子答牙曰：“何喜可贺？连年征伐无休，日不能安食，夜不能安寝；怎能得静坐蒲团，了悟无生之妙也！”燃灯道：“今日烦文殊道友，可将青莲宝色旗往西岐山震地驻札；赤精子用离地焰光旗在岐山离地驻札；中央戊己乃贫道镇守；西方聚仙旗须得武王亲自驻札。”子牙曰：“这个不妨。”随即请武王至相府。子牙不提起擒殷郊之事，只说是：“请大王往岐山退兵；老臣同往。”武王曰：“相父分付，孤自当亲往。”话说子牙掌聚将鼓，令黄飞虎领令箭，冲张山大辕门；邓九公冲左粮道门；南宫适冲右粮道门；哪吒、杨戬在左；韦护、雷震子在右；黄天化在后；金木二吒、李靖父子三人掠阵。”正是： 计就月中擒玉兔，谋成日里捉金乌。子牙分付停当，先同武王往岐山，安定西方地位。

It is said that Old Man Nanje left Yaochi and went directly to Xi Qi. Yang Jian reported into the prime minister's office. Guangchengzi burned incense to receive the decree, gazed toward the palace, and expressed his gratitude upon completion. Zi Ya welcomed Old Man Nanji into the hall, where they sat together and discussed Yinjiao's affairs. Old Man Nanji said to Zi Ya, "Zi Ya, the auspicious hour is approaching. You must quickly defeat Yinjiao. I will now take my leave for a while." The immortals escorted Old Man Nanji back to his palace. Randel said, "Now that we have the Ju Xian Banner, we can capture Yinjiao." But we still lack two or three more to ensure success." The words were not yet finished when Nezha reported, "Chizongzi has arrived." Zi Ya welcomed him to the front of the hall. Guangchengzi said, "I and my Dao elder are alike, both suffering from such a wayward disciple." They lamented together. Another report came: "Bodhisattva Wenshu Guangfa Tianzun has arrived." After meeting Zi Ya, he said, "Congratulations!" Zi Da Ya asked, "What is there to celebrate?" Years of continuous warfare have brought no rest; by day I cannot eat in peace, and by night I cannot sleep soundly; how can I sit in stillness on a meditation cushion to realize the wondrous truth of non-arising!" Randel said, "Today I trouble my Dao friend Wenshu to take the Qinglian Baose Banner and station it at the western part of Qi Mountain; Chizongzi will use the Li Di Yanguang Banner to station it in the southern part of Qi Mountain; the central direction, Wu Ji, shall be guarded by this humble Daoist; and the western Ju Xian Banner must be personally stationed by King Wu." Zi Ya said, "That should not be a problem." He immediately invited King Wu to the prime minister's office. Zi Ya did not mention capturing Yinjiao, but only said, "Please Your Majesty go to Qi Mountain and withdraw the troops; an old minister will accompany you." King Wu said, "As my prime father has ordered, I shall personally go." It is said that Zi Ya took charge of the drum for gathering generals and ordered Huang Feihu to take command with a spear, charging toward Zhang Shan's main gate; Deng Jiugong charged through the left supply route gate; Nangong Shi charged through the right supply route gate; Nezha and Yang Jian were on the left; Weihu and Leizhenzi were on the right; Huang Tianhua was at the rear; and Jin Zha, Mu Zha, and General Li Jing—the father and his two sons—attacked from the flanks." Indeed: The plan is to capture the jade hare in the moon, and seize the golden crow under the sun. After making all arrangements, Zi Ya went with King Wu first to Qi Mountain to stabilize the western position.

且说张山、李锦见营中杀气笼罩，上帐见殷郊，言曰：“千岁，我等驻札在此，不能取胜，不如且回兵朝歌，再图后举。千岁意下如何？”殷郊曰：“我不曾奉旨而来。待吾修本，先往朝歌，求援兵来至，料此一城有何难破？”张山曰：“姜尚用兵如神，兼有玉虚门下甚众，亦不是小敌耳。”殷郊曰：“不妨。连吾师也惧吾番天印，何况他人！”三人共议至抵暮。有一更时分，只见黄飞虎带领一枝人马，点炮呐喊，杀进辕门；真是父子兵，一拥而进，不可抵挡。殷郊还不曾睡，只听得杀声大振，忙出帐，上马拎戟，掌起灯笼火把。灯光内只见黄家父子杀进辕门。殷郊大呼曰：“黄飞虎，你敢来劫营，是自取死耳！”黄飞虎曰：“奉将令，不敢有违。”摇枪直取。殷郊手中戟急架忙迎。黄天禄、黄天爵、黄天祥等一裹而上，将殷郊围在垓心。只见邓九公带领副将太鸾、邓秀、赵升、孙焰红冲杀左营；南宫适领辛甲、辛免、太颠、闳夭直杀进右营；李锦接住厮杀；张山战住邓九公。哪吒、杨戬抢入中军，来助黄家父子。哪吒的枪只在殷郊前后心窝、两胁内乱刺；杨戬的三尖刀只在殷郊顶上飞来。殷郊见哪吒登轮，先将落魂钟对哪吒一愰。哪吒全然不理。祭番天印打杨戬。杨戬有八九玄功，迎风变化，打不下马来。故此殷郊著忙。夤夜交兵，苦杀了成汤士卒！ 只因为主安天下，马死人亡满战场。

Meanwhile, Zhang Shan and Li Jin saw the killing aura enveloping their camp. They went to Yinjiao's tent and said, "My Lord, we have stationed here but cannot gain victory. It would be better for us to retreat back to Chaoguo and plan further actions later. What is Your Lordship's opinion?" Yinjiao said, "I did not come here by imperial decree. I shall prepare a report and go to Chaoguo first, seeking reinforcements. With them, I can easily break through this city!" Zhang Shan said, "Jiang Shang commands troops like a god. Moreover, there are many disciples from Yu Xu Palace; they cannot be considered minor foes." Yinjiao replied, "That should not matter. Even my master fears my Fantian Seal; how much more so others!" The three of them discussed until dusk. At the first watch of the night, Huang Feihu led a contingent of troops, set off firecrackers, shouted war cries, and charged into the main gate; Truly a father-son army, they surged forward together, unstoppable. Yinjiao had not yet gone to sleep when he suddenly heard the clamor of battle. He hurriedly left his tent, mounted his horse, took up a halberd, and raised lanterns and torches. Within the light, he saw Huang Feihu's father and son charging into the main gate. Yinjiao shouted loudly, "Huang Feihu! You dare to raid my camp? That is only bringing death upon yourself!" Huang Feihu replied, "I follow the general's order and cannot disobey." He waved his spear forward to attack directly. Yinjiao quickly raised his halberd to block and meet the strike. Huang Tianlu, Huang Tianjue, Huang Tianxiang, and others rushed forward together, surrounding Yinjiao in the center. Meanwhile, Deng Jiugong led his deputy generals Tai Luan, Deng Xiu, Zhao Sheng, and Sun Yanhong to charge into the left camp; Nangong Shi led Xin Jia, Xin Mian, Tai Dian, and Hong Yao to charge directly into the right camp; Li Jin engaged them in fierce combat; Zhang Shan fought against Deng Jiugong. Nezha and Yang Jian rushed into the central camp to assist Huang Feihu and his sons. Nezha's spear wildly stabbed at Yinjiao's front and back chest, as well as both sides of his ribs; Yang Jian's three-pointed knife flew constantly above Yinjiao's head. Yinjiao, seeing Nezha mount his wheel, first brandished the Luohun Bell toward Nezha in a flash. Nezha completely ignored it. He invoked the Fantian Seal to strike Yang Jian. Yang Jian, possessing the Ba Jiu Xuan Gong, transformed and changed with the wind, and could not be brought down from his horse. Thus Yinjiao became greatly agitated. In the dead of night, they engaged in battle, and the soldiers of Chengtang were terribly slaughtered! It is all because of striving to secure peace for the realm; horses died and men perished, filling the battlefield.

话说哪吒祭起一块金砖，正中殷郊的落魂钟上，只打得霞光万道。殷郊大惊。南宫适斩了李锦，也杀到中营来助战。张山与邓九公大战，不防孙焰红喷出一口烈火，张山面上被火烧伤，邓九公赶上一刀，劈于马下。九公领众将官也冲杀至中军，重重叠叠把殷郊围住，──枪刀密匝，剑戟森罗，如铜墙铁壁。殷郊虽然是三首六臂，怎经得起这一群狼虎英雄──俱是“封神榜”上恶曜。又经得雷震子飞在空中，使开金棍刷将下来。殷郊见大营俱乱，张山、李锦皆亡，殷郊见势头不好，把落魂钟对黄天化一愰。黄天化翻下玉麒麟来。殷郊乘此走出阵来，往岐山逃遁。众将官鸣锣擂鼓，追赶三十里方回。黄飞虎督兵进城，俱进相府，候子牙回兵。

Now Nezha invoked a golden brick, which struck precisely on Yinjiao's Luohun Bell, causing it to emit myriad rays of radiant light. Yinjiao was greatly startled. Nangong Shi beheaded Li Jin and also rushed to the central camp to join the battle. Zhang Shan engaged Deng Jiugong in fierce combat, but was unprepared as Sun Yanhong suddenly spewed forth a mouthful of blazing fire. Zhang Shan's face was burned by the flames, and Deng Jiugong seized the opportunity to strike with his sword, beheading him from his horse. Deng Jiugong led the other generals to charge into the central camp, layer upon layer surrounding Yinjiao tightly—spears and swords were densely packed, halberds and blades stood in rows like a wall of bronze and iron. Although Yinjiao had three heads and six arms, how could he withstand this group of fierce tiger-like heroes—all were evil stars on the "Fengshen Bang." Moreover, Leizhenzi flew in the air and wielded his golden staff to strike down. Yinjiao saw that the main camp was in chaos, and Zhang Shan and Li Jin had both perished. Seeing the unfavorable situation, Yinjiao brandished his Luohun Bell toward Huang Tianhua in a flash. Huang Tianhua leaped down from his Jade Qilin steed. Yinjiao took advantage of the moment to break out of the formation and fled toward Qishan Mountain. The generals beat gongs, struck drums, and chased after him for thirty li before returning. Huang Feihu led the troops into the city, all entering the prime minister's residence to await Jiang Ziya's return with his army.

且说殷郊杀到天明，止剩有几个残兵败卒。殷郊叹曰：“谁知如此兵败将亡！俺如今且进五关，往朝歌见父借兵，再报今日之恨不迟。”因策马前行。忽见文殊广法天尊站立前面而言曰：“殷郊，今日你要受犁锄之厄！”殷郊欠身，口称：“师叔，弟子今日回朝歌，老师为何阻吾去路？”文殊广法天尊曰：“你入罗网之中，速速下马，可赦你犁锄之厄。”殷郊大怒，纵马摇戟，直取天尊。天尊手中剑急架忙迎。殿下心慌，祭起番天印来。文殊广法天尊忙将青莲宝色旗招展。好宝贝：白气悬空，金光万道，现一粒舍利子。怎见得，有诗为证，诗曰： 万道金光隐上下，三乘玄妙入西方。要知舍利无穷妙，治得番天印渺茫。

Meanwhile, Yinjiao fought until dawn and had only a few remnants of defeated soldiers left. Yinjiao sighed, "Who could have foreseen such a defeat with the loss of my troops and generals! I shall now proceed through the five passes to Chao'ge to see my father for reinforcements, and it is not too late to avenge this day's humiliation." He then urged his horse forward. Suddenly, he saw Wenshu Guangfa Tianzun standing before him and saying, "Yinjiao! Today you are destined to suffer the calamity of the plow and hoe!" Yinjiao bowed slightly, saying respectfully, "Uncle Master, I am returning to Chao'ge today. Why does my master block my path?" Wenshu Guangfa Tianzun said, "You are now ensnared in a net. Quickly dismount from your horse, and I may spare you the calamity of plow and hoe." Yinjiao became furious, urged his horse forward, brandished his halberd, and charged directly at the Heavenly Lord. The Heavenly Lord quickly raised his sword to block and meet Yinjiao's strike. Prince Yinjiao, feeling anxious, invoked the Fantian Seal. Wenshu Guangfa Tianzhen quickly unfurled the Qinglian Baose Banner. Marvelous treasure: white mist hung in midair, myriad golden rays shone forth, revealing a single pearl-like relic. How can this be described? A poem serves as evidence: The poem says: "Ten thousand golden rays obscure the heavens and earth; three vehicles of mystic wisdom lead into the West." To know that this relic holds boundless wonders, it renders the Fantian Seal's power vague and ineffective.

文殊广法天尊展动此宝，只见番天印不能落将下来。殷郊收了印，往南方离地而来。忽见赤精子大呼曰：“殷郊，你有负师言，难免出口发誓之灾！”殷郊情知不杀一场也不得完事，催马摇戟来刺赤精子。赤精子曰：“孽障！你兄弟一般，俱该如此，乃是天数，俱不可逃。”忙用剑架戟。殷郊复祭番天印就打。赤精子展动离地焰光旗。──此宝乃玄都宝物，按五行奇珍。怎见得，有诗为证，诗曰： 鸿蒙初判道精微，产在离宫造化机。今日岐山开展处，殷郊难免血沾衣。

Wenshu Guangfa Tianzhun activated this treasure; suddenly, the Fantian Seal could not descend. Yinjiao retrieved his seal and flew off toward the south from the earth. Suddenly, Chijingzi shouted loudly, "Yinjiao! You have betrayed your master's words and cannot escape the calamity of making a vow!" Realizing that without a fierce battle, nothing would be resolved, Yinjiao urged his horse forward and brandished his halberd to attack Chijingzi. Chijingzi said, "Wicked wretch! You and your brother are alike; you both deserve this fate. It is the will of Heaven, from which none can escape." He quickly raised his sword to parry Yinjiao's halberd. Yinjiao again invoked the Fantian Seal and struck down. Chijingzi quickly unfurled his Flame Light Banner of Fire Earth. —This treasure is a rare artifact from Xuandu, one of the Five Elements' wondrous treasures. How can this be described? Let a poem serve as evidence: The poem says: "In the primordial chaos, the Dao was subtle and profound; born in the Palace of Fire, it holds the mechanism of creation." "Today at Qishan, where this treasure is displayed, Yinjiao cannot escape blood staining his clothes."

赤精子展开此宝，番天印只在空中乱滚，不得下来。殷郊见如此光景，忙收了印，往中央而来。燃灯道人叫殷郊曰：“你师父有一百张犁锄候你！”殷郊听罢著慌，口称：“老师，弟子不曾得罪与众位师尊，为何各处逼迫？”燃灯曰：“孽障！你发愿对天，出口怎免。”殷郊乃是一位恶神，怎肯干休，便气冲牛斗，直取过来。燃灯口称：“善哉！”将剑架戟。未及三合，殷郊发印就打。燃灯展开了杏黄旗。──此宝乃玉虚宫奇珍。怎见得，有诗为证，诗曰： 执掌昆仑按五行，无穷玄法使人惊。展开万道金光现，致使殷郊性命倾。

Chijingzi unfurled this treasure; the Fantian Seal merely tumbled aimlessly in midair and could not descend. Seeing such a scene, Yinjiao hurriedly retrieved his seal and came toward the center. Randel Daoist called out to Yinjiao, "Your master has a hundred plows and hoes waiting for you!" After hearing this, Yinjiao grew anxious and respectfully said, "Master Teacher, your disciple has never offended any of the revered masters. Why are they all pressuring me from every direction?" Randel replied, "Wicked wretch! You made a vow to Heaven. How could you possibly escape the consequences of your words?" Yinjiao was an evil deity and would not easily give up. Filled with rage, he charged forward furiously toward Randel. Randel said respectfully, "Good!" He raised his sword to parry the halberd. Before three exchanges, Yinjiao invoked his seal and struck down immediately. Randel quickly unfurled the Apricot Yellow Banner. —This treasure is an extraordinary rarity from Yuxu Palace. How can this be described? Here is a poem as evidence: The poem says: "Holding the Kunlun, governing the Five Elements; boundless mystic arts astound men." "Unfurling myriad golden rays to appear; thus causing Yinjiao's life to be in peril."

殷郊见燃灯展开杏黄旗，就有万朵金莲现出，番天印不得下来，恐被他人收去了，忙收印在手。忽然望见正西上一看，见子牙在龙凤旛下。殷郊大叱一声：“仇人在前，岂可轻放！”纵马摇戟，大呼：“姜尚！吾来也！”武王见一人三首六臂，摇戟而来，武王曰：“諕杀孤家！”子牙曰：“不妨。来者乃殷郊殿下。”武王曰：“既是当今储君，孤当下马拜见。”子牙曰：“今为敌国，岂可轻易相见，老臣自有道理。”武王看：殷郊来得势如山倒一般，滚至面前，也不答话，直一戟刺来有声。子牙剑急架忙迎。只一合，殷郊就祭印打来。子牙急展聚仙旗。──此乃瑶池之宝，只见氤氲遍地，一派异香，笼罩上面，番天印不得下来。怎见得，有诗为证，诗曰： 五彩祥云天地迷，金光万道吐虹霓。殷郊空用番天印，咫尺犁锄顶上挤。

Yinjiao saw Randel unfurl the Apricot Yellow Banner, and immediately myriad golden lotus flowers appeared. The Fantian Seal could no longer descend, for he feared others might seize it; so he quickly retrieved the seal into his hand. Suddenly, looking toward the due west, Yinjiao saw Jiang Ziya beneath the Dragon and Phoenix Banner. Yinjiao roared loudly, "The enemy is right before me! How can I let him go lightly!" He urged his horse forward and waved his halberd while shouting, "Jiang Shang! Here I come!" King Wu saw a man with three heads and six arms approaching, brandishing a halberd. King Wu exclaimed, "This is terrifying for me!" Jiang Ziya said, "Do not worry." "The one coming is Prince Yinjiao." King Wu said, "Since he is the crown prince of today's dynasty, I should dismount and pay him respects." Jiang Ziya replied, "Now that he is from an enemy state, we cannot meet so easily. An old minister has his own reasons." King Wu watched: Yinjiao approached with a force like an avalanche, rushing toward him. Without saying a word, he struck directly with his halberd, the sound of which echoed loudly. Jiang Ziya quickly raised his sword to meet and block the strike. After just one exchange, Yinjiao immediately invoked his seal to strike down. Jiang Ziya hurriedly unfurled the Ju Xian Banner. —This was a treasure from Yaochi, and suddenly mist filled the ground, an unusual fragrance pervaded the air, covering above, preventing the Fantian Seal from descending. How can this be described? The following poem serves as evidence: The poem says: "Five-colored auspicious clouds obscure heaven and earth; myriad golden rays emit rainbows." "Yinjiao in vain invokes the Fantian Seal, as plows and hoes press down from above within arm's reach."

子牙见此旗有无穷大法，番天印当作飞灰，子牙把打神鞭祭起来打殷郊。殷郊著忙，抽身望北面走。燃灯远见殷郊已走坎地，发一雷声，四方呐喊，锣鼓齐鸣，杀声大振。殷郊催马向北而走。四面追赶，把殷郊赶得无路可投，往前行山径越窄。殷郊下马步行，又闻后面追兵甚急，对天祝曰：“若吾父王还有天下之福，我这一番天印把此山打一条路径而出，成汤社稷还存；如打不开，吾今休矣。”言罢，把番天印打去。只见响一声，将山打出一条路来。殷郊大喜曰：“成汤天下还不能绝。”便往山路就走。只听得一声炮响，两山头俱是周兵卷上山顶来，后面又有燃灯道人赶来。殷郊见左右前后俱是子牙人马，料不能脱得此难，忙借土遁，往上就走。殷郊的头方冒出山尖，燃灯道人便用手一合，二山头一挤，将殷郊的身子夹在山内，头在山外。不知性命如何，且听下回分解。

Jiang Ziya saw that this banner held boundless power; the Fantian Seal was as good as turned to ashes. Jiang Ziya then invoked his Dashen Whip and struck Yinjiao with it. Yinjiao panicked, pulled back, and fled toward the north. From afar, Randel saw that Yinjiao had already fled into the northern direction. He summoned a thunderous roar; shouts echoed from all directions, gongs and drums rang out together, and cries of battle surged forth. Yinjiao urged his horse northward in flight. Surrounded from all sides, Yinjiao was driven with no path to escape; the mountain trails ahead grew ever narrower. Yinjiao dismounted and walked on foot. Hearing the pursuing forces rapidly approaching from behind, he prayed to Heaven: "If my father still has the fortune of ruling the realm, I shall use this Fantian Seal to carve a path through this mountain; then the Chengtang dynasty will endure. If it cannot be opened, my fate is sealed today." After saying this, he invoked the Fantian Seal downward. With a loud sound, it carved out a path through the mountain. Yinjiao rejoiced and said, "The realm of Chengtang is not yet doomed." He then hurried along the mountain path. Just as a cannon roared, Zhou troops from both mountain peaks surged up to the summit; behind them came also Master Randel in pursuit. Yinjiao saw that troops of Jiang Ziya surrounded him on all sides and realized he could not escape this predicament. He quickly summoned a earth 遁 (earth 遁 is likely referring to an earth 遁 technique, or "earth 遁" as in earth 遁, which can be translated as "earth 遁 technique") and dashed upward. Just as Yinjiao's head emerged from the mountain peak, Master Randel clapped his hands together. The two mountain peaks pressed in and squeezed, pinning Yinjiao's body inside the mountain with only his head outside. Whether he would survive or not remains to be seen; we shall continue in the next chapter.
