Chapter 45: Master Randeng Discusses Breaking the Ten Absolute Arrays
The poem says: Within the "Heavenly Absolute Formation" much is fierce and intense; if one encounters the "Earthly Flame," it becomes even more unbearable. Qin Wan's gathering of numbers are all heaven-determined; Yuan Jiao's execution is due to his greedy nature. Thunder and fire have burned away the two already; binding the immortal and restraining him prevents forming a three. A mere ten formations, what help do they bring? They only earn mention on the "Canon of Deified Immortals."
Now, as the people were discussing who should be the main general to break through the formation, they pushed and yielded among themselves. Suddenly, a Daoist priest arrived from the sky, riding on a deer and cloud, with fragrant winds wafting around him. How could one describe his extraordinary appearance and strange features? Truly, he was the foremost of immortals, a descendant from the lineage of Buddha. There is a poem to attest: The day's auspicious colors shimmer and sway; five-colored divine clouds fly endlessly. Within the sky, the deer's cry echoes like the Nine Gao sound; purple zhi mushrooms display vibrant colors with layers of leaves. At the central gate appears the image of a true immortal; his strange and unusual features are naturally distinct. Divine dances pierce through the sky with rainbows; at his waist hangs a precious scroll, free from birth and extinction. He is known as Rendeng beneath Lingjue Mountain, often attending the Peach Banquet to add longevity to his realm of life.
The immortals recognized him as Daoist Priest Rendeng, of Yuanjue Cave on Lingjue Mountain. They all descended from their canopies to welcome him aboard and paid respects before he sat down. Rendeng said, "All my Daoist friends have arrived first; I am late in coming. I hope you will not take this to heart." "Now the Ten Absolute Formations are especially fierce and cruel; I wonder who shall be in charge?" Zi Ya bowed respectfully, saying, "I have been waiting for the Master's instruction." Rendeng said, "My coming here is indeed to relieve Zi Ya of his burden and take charge of the talismans and seals; Secondly, because my fellow immortals are in distress, I have specially come to resolve it; Thirdly, to fulfill my own intention." Please proceed, Master Zi Ya! You may hand over the talismans and seals to me." Zi Ya and the others were all greatly pleased, saying, "The Daoist master's words are indeed not mistaken." They immediately presented the talismans and seals in a respectful manner to Rendeng. Rendeng accepted the seals and talismans, thanked his fellow Daoist friends, and then began to organize matters concerning breaking through the ten formations. Indeed: The thunder gods exert great force; even immortals cannot escape the decree of death.
Now, as Daoist Priest Rendeng arranged his strategy to break the formation, he could not help but sigh inwardly: "This calamity will surely cost me ten of my friends."
Meanwhile, Lord Wenshoucheng summoned the Ten Heavenly Lords to his tent and asked while seated: "Have the ten formations been fully completed?" Qin Wan said, "They have been completed for quite some time." You may send someone to deliver a challenge letter, informing them that we will achieve success early so that we can return in triumph." Lord Wenshoucheng hurriedly wrote a letter and ordered Deng Zhong to go to Zi Ya's camp to deliver the challenge. Nezha, seeing Deng Zhong arrive, asked, "What business brings you here?" Deng Zhong replied, "To deliver a challenge letter." Nezha reported to Zi Ya: "Deng Zhong has delivered the challenge letter." Zi Ya ordered, "Bring it up." The letter read: "From Lord Wenshoucheng, the Grand Marshal of the Western Expedition, to the command of Chancellor Jiang Zi Ya: As the ancients said, 'All within the borders are subjects of the king.'" Now, without cause you have rebelled, committing offenses against all under heaven; thus, you are despised by all. Repeatedly summoned to submit under heaven's justice, you have not repented of your crimes, but instead acted with arrogance and violence, killing the royal forces, bringing disgrace upon the court; thus, your crime is unforgivable. Now these Ten Absolute Formations have been fully set up, and I shall decide victory or defeat with you. Therefore, I have sent Deng Zhong to deliver this letter; please fix a date and await your arrival to break the enemy." "On the day the challenge arrives, this shall be announced immediately."
After reading the letter, Zi Ya returned it with a reply: "We will meet in battle three days later." Deng Zhong returned to see Lord Wenshoucheng and reported, "The meeting of formations is set for three days later." Lord Wenshoucheng then arranged a banquet in the main camp, entertaining the Ten Heavenly Lords with great fanfare and drinking. Drinking until the third watch of the night, they exited the central command tent and suddenly saw from within Zhou's reed canopies a group of Daoist priests whose heads were surrounded by auspicious clouds and radiant colors; some bore golden lamps and sacred leaves, with jeweled ornaments hanging like dripping water from eaves, flowing continuously. The Ten Heavenly Lords were startled and exclaimed, "The people of Kunlun Mountain have arrived!" All were greatly alarmed; each returned to their respective formations and remained vigilant. Unaware, it was already the third day. On that morning, cannons roared in the Cheng Tang camp and shouts rose together. Lord Wenshoucheng emerged from the camp at the wicket gate; to his left and right were arranged the troops of the four generals Deng, Xin, Zhang, and Tao; the ten formation commanders stood in their respective positions according to direction. Looking toward the reed canopies of Xi Qi, faint banners fluttered and auspicious mists drifted; on both sides were arranged disciples from the Three Mountains and Five Great Peaks. The first pair to emerge was Nezha and Huang Tianhua. The second pair was Yang Jian and Leizhenzi; the third pair was Han Dulong and Xue Ehu. The fourth pair was Jinzha and Muzha. How can this be described? A poem attests: The jade chimes and bronze bells sound in two parts; auspicious clouds rise beneath the city of Xi Qi. From now on, the Ten Absolute Formations shall be shattered; the illustrious name of Thunder Ancestor will be heard for ten thousand years.
Now, Daoist Priest Rendeng took command as the supreme general, leading all the immortals from their canopies. They walked in procession, moving slowly and orderly. Looking ahead, Chi Zigen faced Kuangchengzi; Taiyi Zhenren faced Lingbao Dafashi; Daode Zhenjun faced Juliusun; Wenshu Guangfa Tianzun faced Puxian Zhenren; Cihai Daoren faced Huanglong Zhenren, and Yuding Zhenren faced Daoxing Tianzun; twelve high immortals stood in perfect formation. In the center, on a plum blossom deer sat Daoist Priest Rendeng; Chi Zigen struck a bronze bell; Kuangchengzi struck a jade chime. Suddenly, a bell rang from within the "Heavenly Absolute Formation," and as the formation gate opened, two banners fluttered. A Daoist priest emerged; what was his appearance? His face was blue-black like indigo, his hair red as cinnabar, and he rode a yellow-spotted deer out of the formation. One could see: A lotus seed circlet on his head; a crimson robe embroidered with white cranes. In his hand he held a four-edged golden pestle, secretly carrying the mysterious chain for capturing immortals. He roamed the Three Mountains and visited Dongyue; within the Golden Tortoise Island, he burned elixirs of immortality. Because of vexation, anger, and ignorance, he no longer resides in high mountains to enjoy bliss.
Now, Lord Qin of the "Heavenly Absolute Formation" flew out from within the formation. Daoist Priest Rendeng looked to his left and right, thinking silently: "There is not a single disciple destined for this calamity who can break through the formation first..." Just as he was speaking, suddenly a gust of wind blew from above, and down came an immortal—this was Deng Hua, the fifth disciple of Yu Xu Palace; he carried a square-tipped halberd. Seeing the group of Daoist priests, he bowed respectfully and said, "I have come here at my master's command to break through the 'Heavenly Absolute Formation.'" Rendeng nodded thoughtfully and reflected, "The numbers were set beforehand; how can this calamity be escaped!" Before he could reply, Lord Qin suddenly shouted, "Who from the Yu Xu teachings dares to face my formation?" Deng Hua stepped forward and said, "Qin Wan, do not come so boldly. Do not act with arrogance or recklessness!" Lord Qin replied, "Who are you to speak such bold words?" Deng Hua said, "Karma-bound fool! You don't even recognize me now?" "I am Deng Hua, a disciple of Yu Xu Palace." Lord Qin said, "Dare you come to face my formation?" Deng Hua replied, "Having received the decree to descend from the mountain, how could I possibly return empty-handed!" He raised his halberd and charged forward. Lord Qin urged his deer forward to counter, and the two clashed on their steeds, fighting fiercely before the "Heavenly Absolute Formation." How was it seen: One lightly shifted in Daoist steps; the other turned sharply with a yellow-spotted deer. Lightly shifting in Daoist steps, he raised a gilded five-colored banner; The other turned his yellow-spotted deer and swung the golden pestle like a dragon's tail in motion. One, with Daoist resolve faltering, gave way to malice; the other paid no heed to the true and wondrous secrets of eternal life. One, with a blue face, radiated killing intent piercing three thousand zhang; the other, with a pale face, exuded malevolent energy shattering five clouds of auspiciousness. One was a heavenly lord of thunder displaying might and courage; the other was a divine saint of the Solar Palace, exuding lofty bearing. Indeed: Those marked on the Canon of Deified Immortals, how can they escape calamity of body and soul?
Now, as Lord Qin fought Deng Hua for no more than three or four rounds, he suddenly turned and fled into the formation. Deng Hua hurried after him; seeing Lord Qin enter the formation gate, Deng Hua also rushed into the array. Lord Qin saw Deng Hua rushing in quickly and climbed onto a wooden platform—on the platform was an altar, on which stood three banners with multiple heads. Lord Qin took the banners in his hands, turned them several times to the left and right, then cast them downward. Thunder cracked as Deng Hua suddenly became dazed and confused, unable to discern directions, collapsing onto the ground. Lord Qin descended from the platform, severed Deng Hua's head, carried it out of the formation, and shouted loudly: "Who among the disciples of Kunlun dares to challenge my 'Heavenly Absolute Formation' now!" Ran Deng, seeing Deng Hua's severed head, could not help but sigh: "Alas! Many years of cultivation, yet it all ends today!" Seeing that Lord Qin had returned to challenge the formation once more, he ordered Bodhisattva Manjushri Guangfa Tianzun to go first and break this array, and instructed him with utmost care: "You must be especially cautious!" Bodhisattva Manjusri said, "I understand." He accepted the decree of dharma. Composing a song, he said: "I wish to test my sharpness and am not afraid of toil; the Jade Dragon roars from the Lingxiao treasure chest. Purple qi three thousand zhang long in hand, a hundred chi high clouds pierce the sky above my head." At dawn before the golden palace I speak of morality and virtue; at times I go to Yu Jing to plant peaches of longevity. Following my master's decree, I leave the immortal mansion; I too must descend into the mortal world for a while."
Bodhisattva Manjuśrī Guangfa Tianzun asked, "Lord Qin, your sect of the Way of Severance is free and unrestrained, originally full of joy; why have you set this 'Heavenly Absolute Array' to harm living beings?" Since I am here now to break the array, I shall surely break my vow of non-violence. It is not that we abandon compassion; it is merely to resolve past karmic causes. You must not regret this later!" Lord Qin laughed and said, "You are idle and carefree immortals; how come you too have come to suffer such vexation. You do not know the boundless wonders within my array. It is not I who forces you; it is your own karmic retribution!" Bodhisattva Manjurī Guangfa Tianzun smiled and said, "Nor do you know who has incurred the sin of a death sentence!" Lord Qin became furious and brandished his weapon to strike. The Tianzun said, "How auspicious!" He raised his sword to block and parry. Before several rounds had passed, Lord Qin turned and fled back into the array. The Tianzun hurried to the entrance of the "Heavenly Absolute Array," where he saw cold mists swirling and mournful winds howling. He hesitated himself, daring not to enter without authorization. Just then, hearing the sound of a golden bell from behind, he had no choice but to proceed into the array. The Tianzun pointed his hand downward, and two white lotuses suddenly sprouted from the ground. The Tianzun stepped onto the two lotuses and floated forward gracefully. Lord Qin shouted, "Bodhisattva Manjugusri Guangfa Tianzun! Even if you speak and golden lotuses bloom, or with a wave of your hand white light shines, you cannot escape my 'Heavenly Absolute Array.'" The Tianzun smiled and said: "What is this to me? How difficult can it be!" He opened his mouth, and a golden lotus as big as a gourd was expelled; from the five fingers of his left hand, five beams of white light descended to the ground and then curled upward. Above each beam of white light was a lotus flower; on top of each lotus stood five golden lanterns lighting the way. Meanwhile, Lord Qin wielded the three-headed banner as before. Suddenly, Bodhisattva Manjuśri Guangfa Tianzun saw a celebratory cloud rising above his head; from within five-colored rays of light, tassels and pearl chains hung down, while he held aloft a seven-treasure golden lotus, manifesting an emanation body. How was this seen: Understanding the spiritual platform, one's nature becomes unique; free and unbound, dharma cannot restrain. The lotus has long faced the Primordial Sea; tassels hang like threads of pearls above the head.
Now, Lord Qin shook the banner dozens of times, but could not move Guangfa Tianzun at all. Within the light, the Tianzun spoke: "Lord Qin! I cannot let you go today; I must fulfill my vow to kill!" He cast the Dragon-Evading Stake into the air, trapping Lord Qin. This stake followed the Three Talents; with three rings above and below, it bound Lord Qin tightly in a straight line. Guangfa Tianzun bowed respectfully toward Kunlun and said, "Disciple today breaks this vow of non-violence!" He slashed with his treasure sword, severed Lord Qin's head, and carried it out from the "Heavenly Absolute Array." Lord Wenshi, seated on his black qilin, saw Lord Qin beheaded and shouted in rage: "This anger will kill me!" He spurred his mount forward and cried out, "Manjuśrī, do not run! I am coming!" The Tianzun paid no heed. The qilin came swiftly, like a black cloud rolling in. How was this seen? Later generations praised it with a poem: Anger pierces the sky, how can one soothe it? One's heart desires only to raise arms for war. Do not say this array has no day of victory; even with ingenious strategies, all are but falsehoods.
Meanwhile, after Ran Deng, the Yellow Dragon Zhenren rode a crane flying over to block Lord Wenshi and said: "Lord Qin's 'Heavenly Absolute Array' destroyed my junior brother Deng Hua. Now that Lord Qin has perished, it is sufficient retribution. Now only one of the ten arrays has been broken; nine remain undecided in outcome; this is a contest of dharma, not strength. You should withdraw for now!"
Just then, a bell rang from the "Earthly Flame Array," and Zhao Jiang, riding on his plum blossom deer, emerged singing: "Wondrous within wondrous, mysterious beyond mystery. Speech in motion reveals the Dao; silence is the way of immortals." In hand, they shine like pearls; in sky, they appear as full moons. When merit is complete, return beyond the material world; ascend directly to Da Luo Heaven."
Lord Zhao shouted, "Since Guangfa Tianzun has broken the 'Heavenly Absolute Array,' who dares to challenge my 'Earthly Flame Array'?" He charged forward fiercely. Master Ran Deng ordered Han Dulong: "Go and break the 'Earthly Flame Array.'" Han Dulong leaped forward and shouted, "Do not act recklessly! I am coming!" Lord Zhao asked, "Who are you? How dare you appear before me?" Han Dulong said, "I am a disciple of Daoxing Tianzun. Following the decree of my master Ran Deng, I have come especially to break your 'Earthly Flame Array.'" Zhao Jiang laughed and said, "You are but a trivial cultivator; how dare you come to break my array? You will only lose your life in vain!" He raised the sword in his hand and flew straight toward Han Dulong, striking with intent. Han Dulong met the strike with his own sword; their blades clashed like purple lightning streaking across the sky, as if icy winds burst from a valley. After five or six rounds of combat, Zhao Jiang struck with his sword and retreated into the array in defeat. Han Dulong hurried after him and rushed into the formation. Lord Zhao ascended the wooden platform, waved the five-direction banners, and strange clouds gathered around. A thunderclap sounded; above came a fiery canopy, while below surged attacks of fire and lightning, both striking together in unison. Alas for Han Dulong—within moments his body was reduced to pulp and powder. ——His soul, however, journeyed toward the Canon of Deified Immortals; a deity of pure fortune led it inside. Meanwhile, Lord Zhao once again mounted his plum blossom deer and exited the array, shouting: "Daoist friends of the School of Enlightenment, send someone truly cultivated to face this formation. Do not allow those with shallow roots and meager cultivation to come here only to lose their lives in vain! Who dares challenge my array again?" Master Ran Deng said, "Juliu Sun, go and try it out." Julu Sun accepted the order and came singing: "Interwoven light of sun and moon refines golden essence; two luminous pearls pierce through the chamber, bringing clarity. Moving heaven and earth reveals true power; transcending life and death marks perfected cultivation." Wandering freely across the four seas, I leave my traces behind; returning to Xuandu, I establish my name and reputation. Straight up through five clouds, the path is steady; purple 鸾 and crimson cranes come to greet me naturally."
Julu Sun leaped forward, seeing Lord Zhao riding his deer approaching. How was he dressed? One could see: A green jade crown with a single red dot; a jadegreen robe, adorned with clusters of flowers. Silken sashes tied in the pattern of heaven and earth; beneath his feet he often stood on two clouds. The Tai'e sword displayed seven stars, capable of slaying dragons and tigers, cutting down demons and spirits. A true immortal from Jiulong Island, he wished to establish great merit for the state of Cheng Shang.
Julu Sun said, "Zhao Jiang, you are an immortal of the Way of Severance. You differ greatly from us; your heart is treacherous and evil. How could you set such a cruel array to defy heaven's will! Do not boast of your Daoist arts in your heart; I fear you cannot escape the calamity awaiting you on the Canon of Deified Immortal!" Lord Zhao became furious, brandished his sword, and flew straight toward him to strike. Julu Sun took up his sword and met the attack head-on. Before several rounds had passed, Zhao Jiang once again retreated into the array as before. Julu Sun hurried after and arrived at the front of the array but dared not advance carelessly; He only heard the sound of a bell ringing from behind, urging him forward, so he had no choice but to enter the array. Lord Zhao had already ascended the platform and was using the five-direction banners as before. Seeing the situation was dire, Julu Sun first opened the heavenly gate, summoned a cloud of celebration to protect himself, and then retrieved the Immortal-Binding Rope. He ordered the Yellow Turban Laborers to seize Zhao Jiang within the reed pavilion and await further instructions. One could see: Golden light issuing from his hand startled ten thousand immortals; a single breath of immortal wind pierced through the body. "Earthly Flame Array," employing wondrous methods, lifted him from midair to the reed pavilion above.
It is said that Julu Sun ordered the Yellow Turban Laborers with the Immortal-Binding Rope to lift Zhao Jiang and throw him down beneath the reed pavilion. The impact caused Sanwei Fire to spew from all seven orifices of Zhao Jiang, thus breaking the "Earthly Flame Array." Julu Sun slowly returned. Lord Wenshi, upon seeing the "Earthly Flame Array" broken and Zhao Jiang captured, shouted from atop his black Qilin as if a thunderclap: "Julu Sun, do not run away!" I am coming for you!" At this time, Master Yudin said: "Brother Wen, you need not act so rashly. We have received a decree from Yu Xu Gong to descend into the mortal realm, became entangled in worldly affairs, and came to break these ten arrays; we have only just broken two of them, with eight more remaining unresolved. Moreover, if we had truly spoken of dueling Daoist methods, there would be no need for such loud words and expressions; that is not the conduct of a true master in the Way." These words left Lord Wenshi speechless. Daoist Master Randeng ordered, "Let us return for now." Lord Wenshi also returned to the old camp and summoned the eight array commanders, saying: "We have only just broken two arrays, yet we have already injured two Daoist friends. This truly pains my heart as Wen Zhong!" Lord Dong said, "All things are determined by fate." Once events have reached this point, there is no way to contain or control them. Now let us make my 'Roaring Wind Array' achieve great merit." They discussed it together with Lord Wenshi. No further details are mentioned.
Meanwhile, Daoist Master Randeng returned to the pavilion, and Julu Sun brought Zhao Jiang down beneath the pavilion to report to him. Randeng said, "Hang Zhao Jiang from the reed pavilion." The immortals asked Daoist Master Randeng: "Can the 'Roaring Wind Array' be broken tomorrow?" Randeng replied, "It cannot be broken." "This 'Roaring Wind Array' is not an ordinary wind of the mortal world. This wind arises from earth, water, and fire. When it is activated, ten thousand blades will come forth within the wind—how can one withstand them?" One must first obtain the Wind-Stilling Pearl to subdue the wind, and only then can this array be broken." The Daoist friends asked, "Where should we go to borrow the Wind-Stilling Pearl?" Among them, the Great Master Lingbao said: "I have a Daoist friend residing in Badao Yunguang Cave on Jiuding Tiecha Mountain. The True Immortal Du'e possesses the Wind-Stilling Pearl; I can write a letter and my disciple may borrow it." Zi Ya dispatched one civil official and one military general to quickly go and borrow the pearl; "Then the 'Roaring Wind Array' will naturally be broken." Zi Ya promptly dispatched Sanyisheng and Chaotian—the two civil and military officers—to travel by starlight to Badao Yunguang Dong on Jiuding Tiecha Shan to retrieve the Wind-Stilling Pearl. The two men left Xi Qi and proceeded directly along the main road. After more than one day, they crossed the Yellow River. Several days later, they arrived at Jiuding Tiecha Mountain. How was it described: Lofty and towering, steep and majestic. Its jagged peaks pierced the heavens; its perilous heights obstructed the azure sky. Strange rocks were piled haphazardly like crouching tigers, and ancient pines hung at odd angles like flying dragons. Birds sang sweet melodies on the mountain ridges; plum blossoms exuded a fragrant aroma by the cliffs. The stream water trickled coldly outward, and dark clouds on the mountain peaks foretold an ominous presence. They also saw drifting mists, chilling winds, and roaring hungry tigers bellowing in the mountains. Cold crows found no trees to perch upon; wild deer searched for dens but left no trace of their path. Alas, travelers struggled to advance further, frowning with worry and covering their heads in despair.
It is said that Sanyisheng and Chaotian rode up the mountain, dismounted at the cave entrance, and saw a young attendant emerge from the cave. Sanyisheng said: "Elder Brother, please be so kind as to inform our master: Officials from the Western Zhou have sent me, Sanyisheng, to request an audience." The young attendant went inside; After a short while, the young attendant said: "Please come in." Sanyisheng entered the cave and saw an immortal seated on a mat. Sanyisheng bowed and presented the letter. After reading the letter, the immortal said to Sanyisheng: "You have come here, Master, to borrow the Wind-Stilling Pearl. At this time, many immortals are gathered to break the Ten Absolute Arrays; all of this is determined by fate; I cannot but agree. Moreover, with a letter from my elder brother Lingbao, you must proceed carefully on your journey and not make any mistakes!" He then handed Sanyisheng a Wind-Stilling Pearl. Sanyisheng thanked the immortal, hurriedly descended the mountain, mounted his horse with Chaotian, cracked the whip and rode off urgently, regardless of the perilous terrain. They traveled along the Yellow River for two days but found no ferry boats. Sanyisheng said to Chaotian: "When we came a few days ago, there were ferry boats everywhere; why are there none now?" Just then, a man approached from ahead. Chaotian asked him: "Passerby, how come there is no ferry here?" The passerby replied: "Sir, you do not know—recently two wicked men have arrived here. They are of boundless strength and have driven away all the ferry boats at this crossing." Five li from here, there is another ferry. Everyone must cross through that place, and they demand money for the river crossing. People dare not refuse them; whatever amount they ask for, you have to pay." Sanyisheng heard this and said: "Such a thing? The situation has changed so drastically in just a few days!" They rode forward quickly and indeed saw two big men. They did not row boats but used wooden rafts, tying two ropes—one on the left to board the raft and one on the right to pull it across; one on the right to board and one on the left to pull it back. Sanyisheng was greatly startled in his heart: "Indeed, they are of great strength; and very efficient." His heart was anxious, and he waited for Chaotian to come along with him. Just then, Chaotian's horse arrived before them. He recognized the two men as Fang Bi and Fang Xiang, brothers who were in charge of this ferry crossing. Chaotian said: "General Fang!" Fang Bi looked up and recognized Chaotian. He said, "Brother Chao, where are you going?" Chaotian replied: "I trouble you to ferry me across the river." Fang Bi then guided them with the raft, and together Sanyisheng and Chaotain crossed the Yellow River to the shore. Fang Bi and Fang Xiang met and reminisced about their old friendship. Fang Bi asked: "Brother Chao, to where are you going?" Chaotian explained the entire matter of retrieving the Wind-Stilling Pearl. Fang Bi then asked, "Who is this gentleman?" Chaotian said: "This is Sanyisheng, a high-ranking official from Xi Qi." Fang Bi said: "You are a minister of Zhou. Why are you traveling with him?" Chaotian replied, "King Zhou has lost his mandate; I have already pledged allegiance to King Wu." Now Lord Wenshi is waging war against Xi Qi and has set up the Ten Absolute Arrays. We now wish to break the 'Roaring Wind Array,' hence borrowing this Wind-Stilling Pearl." Today, we are fortunate to meet you and your esteemed brother. Fang Bi reflected: "In the past, I rebelled against Chaoguo and offended King Zhou; since then, I have been in exile. If today we could seize the Wind-Stilling Pearl and use it to redeem our past sins, wouldn't that be good? My brother and I might even regain our positions." He then asked: "Master Sanyi, what exactly is this Wind-Stilling Pearl?" Let me take a look; it would broaden my knowledge." Yisheng, seeing that Fang Bi had helped him cross the river and knowing that Chaotian recognized him, hurriedly took it out and handed it to Fang Bi. Fang Bi opened the package and examined it, then tucked the bundle into his waistband. "This pearl shall serve as payment for crossing the river," he said. Without saying another word, he went directly down the main road to the southeast. Chaotian dared not stop him. Fang Bi and Fang Xiang were over three zhang tall, possessed boundless strength—how could one dare provoke them! Yisheng was so frightened that his soul seemed to scatter, and he wept bitterly: "I have traveled thousands of miles with great hardship; now in an instant it has been taken from me by them. What can I do!" How shall I face Chancellor Jiang and the others!" He turned around and was about to jump into the Yellow River. Chaotian caught hold of Yisheng and said, "Master, do not act in haste. We are willing to die for it and have no regrets, but Chancellor Jiang entrusted us with the mission of obtaining this pearl to break the 'Roaring Winds Array,' a task as urgent as fire and wind; unfortunately, it has been stolen from us. If we were to die in the Yellow River and Chancellor Jiang never learned of our fate, it would mislead important national affairs—this would be disloyalty; To have been robbed en route is a failure of wisdom. I will go with you and report the situation to Chancellor Jiang, so that he may devise another plan. Better to die by the sword than to bear this guilt of disloyalty and lack of wisdom." "If we now die without a clear explanation, both sides will be affected, and the consequences would be even worse." Yisheng sighed: "Who could have known that misfortune would strike here!" The two of them mounted their horses and rode forward, urging the steeds with added force. They had not traveled more than fifteen li when they saw two banners ahead flying out from a mountain pass; Behind them, the sound of grain carts could be heard. When Yisheng's horse reached close by, he saw that it was General Huang Feihu, the Duke of Wucheng, passing through with provisions. Yisheng dismounted from his horse. Duke Wucheng also dismounted and asked, "Master, where are you going?" Yisheng wept and fell to the ground in a bow. Huang Feihu returned the courtesy, then asked Chaotian: "Master Sanyi, is there something wrong that has caused you to weep so bitterly?" Yisheng recounted the entire incident of obtaining the Wind-Stilling Pearl, crossing the Yellow River, and encountering Fang Bi who had taken it away. Huang Feihu asked: "When was it stolen?" Yisheng replied, "Not long ago and not far away." Feihu said: "Do not worry. I will go with you to retrieve it." "Wait here for a short while." Feihu mounted his divine ox—this beast could travel eight hundred li in one day and was visible from both ends. He loosened the reins, and before long, he had already caught up. He saw the two brothers walking ahead with a swaying gait. Duke Huang shouted loudly: "Fang Bi, Fang Xiang, slow down!" Fang Bi turned around and saw it was Duke Wucheng Huang Feihu. They had not seen each other for many years, so he hurriedly knelt by the roadside and asked Duke Huang: "Where are you going, Your Majesty?" Feihu shouted angrily: "Why did you seize Master Sanyisheng's Wind-Stilling Pearl?" Fang Bi replied, "He gave it to me as payment for ferrying him across. Who is robbing whom?" Feihu said: "Quickly give it to me!" Fang Xiang handed the pearl over with both hands to Huang Feihu. Feihu asked: "Where have you two been all this time?" Fang Bi replied, "Since parting from Your Majesty, my brother and I have lived by the river in hardship, suffering beyond words." Feihu said: "I abandoned King Chengtang and now serve the Zhou Kingdom. King Wu is indeed a sage ruler, whose benevolence and virtue rival that of Yao and Shun. Though the world is divided into three parts, two are already under his rule." Now I have heard that Lord Wenshi has been waging war in Xi Qi and has failed to achieve victory despite repeated battles. Since you have nowhere else to go, why not come with me and pledge allegiance to King Wu? You will still be granted a noble title. Otherwise, it would be a waste of your brothers' talents." Fang Bi said: "If Your Majesty is willing to promote us, it would be the greatest kindness to my foolish brothers. What could possibly prevent that?" Feihu said: "Since that is so, come with me." The two brothers followed Duke Wumang Wang and rode swiftly back; in an instant they had arrived. Yisheng and Chaotian saw the Fang brothers following behind, and were so frightened that their souls seemed to leave their bodies. Duke Wucheng dismounted and handed the Wind-Stilling Pearl back to Yisheng: "You two go ahead first; I will bring Fang Bi and Fang Xiang later." Meanwhile, Yisheng and Chaotian hurriedly arrived at the tent in Xi Qi under cover of night to see Ziya. Ziya asked: "How did you fare with obtaining the Wind-Stilling Pearl?" Yisheng recounted in detail how it had been stolen while crossing the Yellow River. Ziya shouted angrily: "Yisheng! If this pearl is truly as important, then even if it were the national seal, it would have been stolen en route!" "Go away for now and bear your guilt!" łoż Ziya took the Wind-Stilling Pearl into his tent and presented it to Master Randeng. The assembled immortals said: "With this pearl, we can break the 'Roaring Wind Formation' tomorrow." Whether they would win or lose remained to be seen. We shall see in the next chapter.
