Chapter 34
The verse says: Left path and side doorways are in chaos like hemp, only because a dim-witted ruler stirs up waves. Greedy and lustful, they do not avoid the norms of propriety; who knows that disorder in governance has caused the state's affairs to go awry. Generals and ministers should naturally return to the sage ruler; why did Han Rong obstruct the procession? On the way, he encountered Lingzhuzi, who injured him with a brick, in vain lamenting and sighing.
The story goes that Huang Gun crawled forward on his knees to the front and requested punishment, seeing Han Rong. He said, "Offending official Huang Gun specially comes to pay respects to the general." Han Rong hurriedly replied, "Old General, these matters are all of great importance to the state; it is not something I, a low-ranking officer, would dare to decide on my own." "Now that you, Old General, have come like this, what instructions do you have?" Huang Gun said, "The Yellow Gate official who breaks the law should be justly punished; there is originally no room for denial; but there is one matter that falls within the category of circumstances deserving compassion. I hope General Han will show mercy beyond the law and open this thread of a lifeline; then, even if my foolish son and I die in the netherworld, our gratitude for your kindness will be boundless." Han Rong said, "What matter is it you entrust to me?" I would be honored to hear it." Huang Gun said, "The son's faults lead to the father's death; I dare not complain. Yet the Yellow Gate has for seven generations been loyal and virtuous, never once failing in their loyalty." Now, unfortunately, we have encountered this calamity, causing my descendants to be entirely slaughtered; the situation is indeed pitiable. Forced by circumstances, I crawled on my elbows and knees to beg an audience with you, General. Pity the innocent child; his crime is pardonable. I implore you, General, to allow this seven-year-old grandson of mine to leave the pass, so that a line of the Yellow Gate may survive. But I wonder, what is your esteemed opinion, General?" Han Rong said, "Old General, you are mistaken!" "I hold this position here with my official duties; how could I possibly act out of private interest and forget the sovereign?" "For instance, you, Old General, hold the position of head, with authority over all officials. Your entire household enjoys wealth and honor, fully receiving the grace of the state. Yet you do not think of repaying this favor; instead, you let your son rebel against the court. His crime is unforgivable, and even a child so young must not be spared." "If an entire family breaks the law, there can be no private leniency. They must be sent to Chaoguo; the court will have its own impartial judgment, and ultimately justice will prevail." "At that time, with righteousness and proper authority, who would dare refuse to obey?" "Now you, Old General, wish me to release Huang Tianxiang from the pass. If I do so, it would mean I am colluding with rebels and insulting the court—where then is law and discipline?" Neither you nor I could escape blame. "I absolutely dare not obey such an order." Huang Gun said, "General Han above: The Huang family has broken the law, but there are many innocent relatives in our household. Surely a single infant can cause no harm. Even if released, what could he possibly accomplish? This act of compassion would be more than sufficient." "The compassionate heart is something everyone possesses." Why does the General insist so rigidly and not offer even a thread of leniency? Think of our Huang family's contributions, which have accumulated like mountains. To be treated thus in an instant—ancient words say: "If those in power do not show leniency, it is like entering a treasure mountain and returning empty-handed." Can one's life truly be guaranteed to remain free of trouble for an entire hundred years? Moreover, our whole family is wronged and unjustly treated; we are not great villains or wicked people who deliberately plot rebellion. I beg you, General, to show mercy and spare us. While living, I shall repay your kindness; in death, I will never forget it. I swear I would never dare betray the great virtue of a general like you." Han Rong said, "Old General, if you want Tianxiang to leave the pass, I would have to join those who have defected and fled with you to Xiqi. Only then could this matter be done." Huang Gun, after many repeated attempts and seeing that Han Rong remained resolute in upholding the law without agreeing, became greatly enraged. He said to his two grandsons, "I hold the position of supreme commander, yet I am reduced to groveling before others!" "If General Han is unwilling to show leniency, then let my descendants face the trap; what have we to fear!" He immediately went to Han Rong's headquarters and voluntarily entered prison, arriving in the jail. Huang Feihuo suddenly saw his father and two sons arrive together, and burst into loud weeping: "Who could have foreseen that today your words would come true, making me, an unworthy son, a great traitor for all generations!" Huang Gun said: "The matter has reached this point; regret is of no use. Initially, I originally taught you to spare my life, but you refused to do so. Then why should I still complain!" We will not speak of the Huang family father and son weeping in prison. Let us instead speak of Han Rong, who having obtained the merits and achievements of the Huang family's father and son, also seized their goods, treasures, and valuables. The officials set up a banquet to celebrate General Han's accomplishments. Drums and gongs were beaten loudly; music was played on sheng and huang flutes, and the officials joyfully drank together. While Han Rong was in the midst of drinking, he began to discuss who should be appointed as the official to escort them to court." Yu Hua said, "Supreme Commander, if you wish to send the Huang family father and son for trial, I myself will go; this way, there will be no worries." Han Rong was greatly pleased. "You must indeed go first; only then can my heart and mind find peace." That evening, the banquet ended. The next day, they mustered 3,000 troops and escorted a total of eleven Huang family officials who had committed crimes to Chaoguo. The officials prepared wine to see Yu Hua off with a farewell banquet. After the drinking was done, a cannon fired, and the troops set out forward. They traveled eighty li to Jiepaiguan Pass. Huang Gun, in the prison cart, saw that the headquarters' hall remained as it was; who could have known that today it would serve as a place for criminals. Touched by memories and emotions, he could not help but weep. The soldiers and civilians within the pass all came to watch; none failed to sigh and shed tears.
We will not speak of the journey of the Huang family father and sons, but instead mention Taiyi Zhenren, who was seated leisurely on a green tour bed at Jinguang Cave on Qianyuan Mountain. Just as he was cultivating his primordial spirit, suddenly an inexplicable feeling surged within him. ── Readers should know that any immortal forever forgets the three things: vexation, anger and delusion, love and desire. Their mind is like stone, never swaying again; "When the blood surges inexplicably, it means something has suddenly stirred in one's heart." Zhenren pinched his sleeve and immediately knew what was happening. "Ah! The Huang family father and sons are in danger; it is my duty to save them." He called out to the child Jinxia, "Please bring your elder brother here." Jinxia went to Peach Garden and saw Nezha using a spear. The child said, "Master is requesting your presence." Nezha put down his spear, came to the green tour bed, and fell on his knees in deep respect. "Disciple Nezha is here; I did not know Master had summoned me for what purpose?" Zhenren said, "The father and son Huang Feihuo are in trouble. You must go down the mountain to save them for a while; see them out past Sishui Pass, then return quickly without delay." ── In the future, you will be fellow ministers in one hall. Nezha was naturally fond of action and was greatly pleased inside. He hurriedly prepared himself, making arrangements to descend the mountain; With his feet on the Wind and Fire Wheels, holding up the Flame-Tip Spear, he left Qianyuan Mountain and headed toward Chuanyun Pass. How fast! How swift was it? A verse attests to this. The verse says: With feet on the wind wheel, he rises into the air; the Daoist arts of Qianyuan are wondrous and boundless. He travels across the world as swiftly as a gust of wind, suddenly seeing through clouds with a glance from his eyes.
The story continues: Nezha, riding the Wind and Fire Wheels, arrived at Chuanyun Pass in an instant. He landed on a hillside and observed for a while, but saw no movement. After standing there for some time, he noticed from that direction a column of troops approaching—banners fluttering, swords and halberds gleaming with strict formation. Nezha thought to himself: "Why would they suddenly start a battle without cause? They must find some fault with him before taking action." Nezha suddenly recalled something and composed a song, which went: "I was born long ago without recording the years; I fear only my revered teacher, not even Heaven. Yesterday, Old Lord Lao passed by here— he would have to throw me a golden brick as well."
After finishing the song, Nezha stepped onto his Wind and Fire Wheels and stood at the narrow pass. A scout on horseback galloped to Yu Hua and reported, "Your Honor: There is a man standing on his chariot singing a song." Yu Hua gave orders to set up camp and urged the Fire-Eyed Golden Vision Beast forward, leaving the camp to observe. He saw Nezha standing on his Wind and Fire Wheels. How could this be described? A verse testifies to it, the verse says: The divine pearl of rare treasure fell into dust; from within Chen Tang Pass emerged a true immortal. At Jiowan River, he slew Li Gen in anger and even plucked the sinew of Xiao Long. Before Baode Gate, Ao Guang submitted; twice ascending Qianyuan Mountain to reveal his transformed body. Three times pursuing Li Jing before recognizing his father, he was gifted a single Flame-Tip Spear. The hairpin on his head shone brilliantly; the water-patterned robe bore tiger and dragon motifs. Golden bricks flew everywhere, unimpeded by anything; the Heaven-and-Earth Ring paired with the Confusing Heaven Silk. Through repeated victories in battles for Xiqi, he ensured eight hundred years of prosperity for the Zhou dynasty. Marching eastward as vanguard through five passes, his spear raised and banners unfurled—unparalleled in brilliance. Transformed into a lotus body that cannot be destroyed, the Eight-Armed Nezha is known far and wide.
The story continues: Yu Hua asked, "Who is the one standing on the Wind and Fire Wheel?" Nezha replied, "I have long dwelled in this place. If there are any travelers passing through, whether officials or emperors, they must leave some money to buy safe passage. Where are you going now?" Hasten to present the money for safe passage, so that you may proceed on your way." Yu Hua laughed and said, "I am Yu Hua, the vanguard general of General Han Rong of Sishui Pass. Today I escort the rebellious official Huang Feihuo and others to Chaoguo for credit." You are very bold, daring to block the path and sing songs! Quickly step aside, or I will spare you no life." Nezha said, "You are originally one who has captured generals with merit. Now passing through this place; well then, just give me ten golden bricks and I will let you pass." Yu Hua became greatly enraged, urged the Fire-Eyed Golden-Vision Beast forward, and brandished his Fangtian Huajia halberd to fly straight at Nezha. Nezha quickly raised his spear in defense. The two generals clashed, engaging in a fierce battle with intense back-and-forth combat. One was the Seven Solitary Stars, a heroic tiger; the other was an incarnate lotus, brimming with vigor and spirit. Nezha was taught by immortals, wielding wondrous methods unlike any others. He exhausted Yu Hua completely, forcing him to cover his halberd and flee in defeat. Nezha said, "I am coming!" lington Yu Hua turned his head and saw Nezha approaching. He hung down the Fangtian halberd, took out the Luhun staff, and rushed forward to seize Nezha as before. Nezha saw it and laughed, saying, "This thing is the Luhun Banner; what makes it so extraordinary!" Nezha saw several dark vapors rushing toward him. With a single hand gesture, he caught them and stuffed them into his leopard-skin pouch, shouting loudly, "How many more are there?" "Just bring them all at once!" Yu Hua, seeing his treasure broken, turned back on his beast and charged toward Nezha again. Nezha thought, "I was sent down the mountain by my master's command to rescue the Huang family father and son. I fear Yu Hua might reveal the secret and kill them; that would be most unfortunate." With his left hand, he held the spear and deflected the Fangtian halberd. With his right hand, he took a golden brick, tossed it into the air, and shouted, "Quickly!" Suddenly, five-colored auspiciousness descended upon the heavens and earth grew dark; on Qianyuan Mountain, treasures radiated light. That brick fell down and struck Yu Hua's helmet on the head. The blow caused him to collapse, blood spurting from his mouth as he fell; he dragged his halberd behind and fled in defeat. Nezha chased for a while, then thought to himself, "I was sent by my master's command to aid the Huang family father and son; if I greedily pursue, won't that cause me to miss the main matter?" He then mounted his twin wheels, launched a golden brick which struck the soldiers, scattering them like stars and clouds, melting their formation as they fled for their lives. Nezha saw a man with dirty face and disheveled hair inside the cage, who shouted loudly in an angry voice, "Who is General Huang?" Feihuo asked, "Who is the one on the twin wheels?" Nezha replied, "I am Li Nezha, a disciple of Master Taiyi Zhenren of the Jinguang Cave on Qianyuan Mountain. My master knows that General, you are now facing a minor tribulation and has sent me down the mountain to assist you." General Wuchengwang was greatly pleased. Nezha used a golden brick to break open the cage and released all the generals inside. Feihuo fell on his knees in gratitude. Nezha said, "All you generals, please proceed slowly. I will now go ahead and capture Sishui Pass for you first, so that the generals may pass through." The crowd expressed their gratitude: "We are deeply indebted to your great virtue for rescuing us in our time of need. We shall have the chance to express our thanks properly." Each person held their short weapons in hand, gritted their teeth and clenched their jaws, filled with rage that shook the heavens, and followed behind.
Meanwhile, Yu Hua retreated back to Sishui Pass in defeat—his Fire-Eyed Golden Vision Beast could travel a thousand li between two sunrises. The distance from Chuanyun Pass to Sishui Pass is one hundred and sixty li. General Han Rong, inside his residence, was just drinking wine with the other generals to celebrate, in high spirits and cheerful mood, discussing matters concerning the Huang family. Suddenly a report came: "The vanguard officer Yu Hua is here." Han Rong was greatly startled, saying, "He left and now returns; there must be something suspicious about this matter." He quickly ordered, "Bring him in for an audience." Indeed: "Upon entering the door, do not ask about glory or decline; just observe one's countenance and you will know." He hurriedly asked, "General, why have you returned? Your face is pale as if you are injured?" Yu Hua pleaded for forgiveness, saying, "As our troops were marching near Chuanyun Pass, a man without name or title appeared. He rode on twin wheels of wind and fire, singing songs as he blocked the road." He demanded ten golden bricks from me before allowing us to pass. I was furious and fought a fierce battle with him. That man's spear techniques were extraordinary, and I had no choice but to retreat on my horse. When I tried to capture him with a treasure, he simply caught it with his bare hands the moment I raised it. I was 不服 and turned back to fight him again. When he moved his hands, I could not tell what object he took out; suddenly a yellow light flashed, and he struck my neck, causing me to flee in defeat." Han Rong anxiously asked, "What has become of the Huang family father and son?" Yu Hua replied, "I do not know." Han Rong stamped his foot and said, "All this hard work was in vain; the rebellious minister has escaped. If the Son of Heaven finds out, how can I escape punishment!" The generals said, "Judging from the situation, Huang Feihuo cannot advance to leave the pass nor retreat toward Chaoguo. Commander Han Rong should quickly dispatch troops to guard the pass and prevent any news of rebellion from leaking out." While they were still discussing, a scout officer reported: "A man has arrived riding on twin wheels and carrying a spear with great valor. He declares himself the 'Seven-Headed General.'" Yu Hua answered from the side, "It is precisely this man." Han Rong became greatly enraged and said, "Summon all the generals to mount their horses; I will capture him!" The generals received the order and mounted their horses, exiting the commander's residence as the three armies swarmed forward. Nezha rode his twin wheels and shouted loudly, "Yu Hua, come to me early and explain clearly!" Han Rong rode ahead and asked, "Who dares approach?" Nezha saw Han Rong wearing a bun cap, golden chain armor, a crimson robe, jade sash, holding a steel spear, and riding a silver horse. He replied, "I am no one else but Li Nezha, disciple of Master Taiyi Zhen Ren from the Jinguang Cave at Qianyuan Mountain; I have descended the mountain upon my master's command to specially rescue the Huang family father and son." Just now I encountered Yu Hua, but did not kill him yet. I have come especially to capture him." Han Rong said, "To intercept and rob an official of the court and then act so defiantly here is most despicable!" Nezha said, "The mandate of Chengtang should end; the holy ruler of Xiqi has already been born. The Huang family is a pillar of Xiqi, exactly corresponding to the will of Heaven; why do you defy Heaven's mandate and bring about such unforeseen calamity?" Han Rong became furious, urged his horse forward, brandished his spear, and charged at Nezha. Nezha rode on his wheels to parry, the two horses clashed in combat; before several exchanges could occur, troops from both sides surrounded them. How fierce was this great battle: The drums thundered loudly, and colorful banners waved in the wind. The three armies roared together; all the generals wielded spears and swords. Nezha's spear blazed with fierce flames; Han Rong displayed his valor on horseback. The generals were as fierce and powerful as tigers, while Nezha shook his head like a lion. The generals moved like suanni lions swishing their tails; Nezha was like the golden tortoise that stirs up the sea. The Fire-Tip Spear was as fierce as a monstrous python; the soldiers and generals exuded an overwhelming aura of killing intent. Nezha cut through gates and locks, displaying his might; Han Rong resisted with heroic vigor. From this moment, the wars of the world began; it was the first encounter at Sishui Pass.
It is said that Nezha's Fire-Tip Spear was taught in the Jinguang Cave, with a technique unlike any other. When he wielded it, his strikes were like a silver dragon reaching out its claws; when he retracted it, it moved as swiftly as lightning and flying rainbows. His spear thrusts sent many generals tumbling from their horses. The generals could not withstand the assault and fled for their lives individually. Han Rong fought with all his might, but just as the battle was at its height, Huang Ming, Zhou Ji, Long Huan, Wu Qian, Feibiao, and Feipao suddenly attacked from behind. They shouted loudly, "This time we will surely capture Han Rong to avenge our grudge!" Meanwhile, Yu Hua had no choice but to bravely urge his Golden-Eyed Beast forward and wield the painted halberd to fight his way out of the residence. The two sides engaged in a chaotic battle. Nezha saw the Huang family's generals charging forward and, with a hand gesture, tossed a golden brick into the air. It fell down and struck General Han Rong directly; it shattered his chest protector into pieces, and he fled in disarray. Yu Hua shouted desperately, "Li Nezha, do not harm my commander!" He urged his beast forward and brandished the halberd to attack. Before three or four exchanges could occur, Nezha blocked the painted halberd with his spear and quickly retrieved the Qiankun Ring from his leopard-skin pouch to strike Yu Hua. It hit Yu Hua's arm directly, breaking tendons and bones so severely that he nearly fell off his beast before fleeing toward the northeast in defeat. Nezha captured Sishui Pass. Huang Ming and the six other generals slaughtered through the pass, causing chaos among its three armies as they scattered in all directions. They were free to eliminate any resistance at will. The next day, Huang Gun and Feihuo arrived together. They entered Han Rong's residence, loaded all the belongings onto carts, and transported them out of Sishui Pass into Xiqi territory. Nezha escorted them to Jinji Ling before parting ways. Huang Gun and the generals Feihuo expressed their gratitude, saying, "We are deeply grateful for your noble act of saving us; it is beyond our expectations. We do not know when we will have the honor to see you again, so that we may serve you as faithfully as dogs and horses, giving our utmost loyalty." Nezha said, "General, take good care on your journey ahead. I, the poor Daoist, will also be heading to Xiqi shortly. We shall meet again in due time; there is no need for such excessive praise." After parting ways, Nezha returned to Qianyuan Mountain. No further mention is made of it.
Now, let us speak of Wu Chengwang and his original three thousand troops along with his household generals. On their journey, they traveled by day and rested at night, passing through high mountains, uneven paths, rugged trails, dangerous waters, precipitous cliffs, and deep, dense forests. There is a verse to attest to this; the verse says: Farewelling Chaoge, returning to the sage ruler, the success or failure of five passes is hard to sustain. From this point on, Zi Ya stirred up war and arms; it was destined that the Four Nine would attack Xiqi.
Now, let us speak of Huang's generals and their troops who passed through Shouyang Mountain, Taohua Ling, crossed Yanshan, and after more than one day, arrived at Xiqi Mountain. Only seventy li away was the city of Xiqi. When Wu Chengwang's troops arrived at Qishan, they set up camp. He reported to Huang Gun: "Father above: I will go ahead to Xiqi and visit Chancellor Jiang. If he is willing to accept us, we can then enter the city; if not, we will deal with it accordingly." Huang Gun said, "My son speaks very wisely." Huang Feihuo, dressed in plain white headgear and riding his horse, traveled seventy li to Xiqi. Looking at the scenery of Xiqi: its mountains and rivers are beautiful, its customs and people sincere and kind—very different from before. He saw pedestrians making way for each other, showing respect according to rank; the population was thriving and the terrain both fertile and strategically difficult. Feihuo sighed, saying, "Xiqi is called the land of sages; today it truly has a peaceful people and abundant resources. It is indeed an age like that of Shun or Yao—praise cannot fully capture its excellence." After entering the city, he asked, "Where is Chancellor Jiang's residence?" A citizen replied, "It is right at the head of Xiaojin Bridge." Huang Feihuo walked to Xiaojin Bridge and arrived at the chancellor's residence. He said to an official waiting in the hall, "Kindly inform Chancellor Jiang that Huang Feihuo from Chaoge wishes to see him." The hall attendant struck the yunban (a ceremonial wooden board) and requested Chancellor Jiang to ascend the dais. Zi Ya came out of Yin'an Hall. The hall attendant presented the visiting card. Zi Ya, after looking at it, said, "Huang Feihuo of Chaoge is none other than Wu Chengwang himself. He has come here today; what business does he have?" He quickly ordered, "Please bring him in." Zi Ya, dressed in official robes, welcomed Huang Feihuo to the yimen (ceremonial gate) and waited respectfully. Huang Feihuo knelt and paid his respects before the drip-eave of the hall. Zi Ya returned the courtesy with great respect, saying, "Your Majesty's arrival has not been met by Jiang Shang at a distance; I have failed to welcome you properly. I humbly beg for your forgiveness." Feihuo said, "I, the low-ranking general Huang Feihuo, am a man of hardship. Today I have abandoned Shang and returned to Zhou; it is like a bird in flight losing its forest, seeking only a branch for temporary refuge. If you would be so kind as to accept me, Feihuo will be eternally grateful!" Zi Ya hurriedly helped him up and they sat down according to the guest-host hierarchy. Feihuo said, "I am but a traitor from Shang; how dare I sit beside Chancellor Jiang?" Zi Ya replied, "Your Majesty speaks too highly! Though I hold the position of chancellor by courtesy, in the past I was once under Your Majesty's administration. Why then are you being so modest today?" Feihuo finally accepted and sat down. Zi Ya bowed respectfully and asked, "Your Majesty, why have you abandoned Shang?" Wu Chengwang said, "King Zhou is decadent and licentious; powerful ministers hold power, refusing to accept loyal and virtuous men while favoring only petty villains. He is obsessed with lust, distinguishing neither day nor night; he does not value the state and its people. He cruelly kills loyal men without fear or restraint, using earthworks to oppress and harm countless civilians. On the first day of this year, my lawful wife was in the palace to offer New Year's greetings. Daji devised a plan and falsely accused her, leading to her falling from the tower and dying. My younger sister was in the western palace. Upon learning of this, she went to Zhaixing Tower to publicly clear her name, but King Zhou favored Daji and had my sister stripped of her court robes, grabbed by the hair at the back of her head, and thrown from Zhaixing Tower, where she was crushed into pulp. I reflected to myself: "If a ruler is unjust, his ministers should seek foreign lands." This is but the natural course of things. Therefore, I rebelled against Chaoge and broke through five passes to come here especially, hoping to serve you like a loyal dog or horse. If you would accept my father and me, it will be the greatest kindness from Chancellor Jiang." Zi Ya was greatly pleased: "Now that Your Majesty is willing to join us, and will strive to support the state, King Wu could not be more delighted! How could there possibly be any reason to refuse you?" He ordered, "Announce outside: Please allow His Majesty to rest at the official residence for a while. I will immediately enter the inner court to report." Feihuo took his leave and went to the official residence. No further mention is made here. Meanwhile, Zi Ya rode into the court on horseback while King Wu of Zhou was seated idly in Xianqing Hall. An attendant at the throne announced, "Chancellor is waiting for an audience." King Wu summoned Zi Ya to appear and paid respects. The king asked, "Father-in-law, what business do you have with me?" Zi Ya reported, "Your Majesty has a great joy! The Wu Chengwang of Chengtang, Huang Feihuo, has abandoned King Zhou and come to submit himself to Your Majesty. This is a sign that the western land will flourish." King Wu asked, "Is Huang Feihuo a relative of the royal family in Chaoge?" Zi Ya said, "Indeed he is. In the past, our late king once spoke highly of him and received great kindness from him. Now that he has returned to us, it is only proper to invite him for an audience." The edict was issued: "Please bring him in." In no time, the messenger returned with orders: "Huang Feihuo is waiting for instructions." King Wu ordered, "Announce him in." Upon reaching the hall, Feihuo fell to his knees and kowtowed, saying, "Huang Feihuo, a loyal subject of Chengtang in hardship, wishes Your Majesty ten thousand years of life!" King Wu returned the courtesy and said, "I have long admired General. Your virtue is renowned throughout the world; your righteousness is respected in all directions. You bestow kindness and accumulate virtue, and people everywhere look up to you. Truly, you are a man of sincerity and integrity." How fortunate it is that we meet now—it is indeed the good fortune of three lifetimes!" Feihuo kowtowed and reported, "I am deeply grateful to Your Majesty for your promotion. My entire family has been lifted from the trap of danger and freed from the net of peril. How could I dare not exert my utmost strength, however feeble, to repay Your Majesty!" King Wu asked Zi Ya, "In the past, what position did General Huang hold in Shang?" Zi Ya reported, "He was honored as Zhanguo Wuchengwang (a title of a national defense general)." King Wu said, "In my Xiqi, I will merely change one character and bestow upon him the title 'Kaiguo Wuchengwang' (Founding State General of Valor)." Huang Feihuo thanked for the favor. King Wu held a banquet, and ruler and ministers drank together. At the feast, he gave a detailed account of King Zhou's misrule. King Wu said, "Even if a ruler is unjust, the minister should still maintain proper courtesy; each must fulfill their own path." King Wu instructed Zi Ya: "Choose an auspicious day to begin construction and build a residence for Feihuo." Zi Ya accepted the order. The banquet ended, and ruler and ministers parted ways. The next day, Huang Feihuo ascended the hall to express his gratitude. After finishing, he further reported: "My father Huang Gun, along with my brothers Feibiao and Feipao, my sons Huang Tianlu, Tianjue, and Tianxiang, my sworn younger brother Huang Ming, Zhou Ji, Long Huan, Wu Qian, and a thousand household generals, together with three thousand men and horses, have not dared to enter the capital city 擅自. We are currently stationed at Xiqi Mountain; I respectfully request Your Majesty's decision." King Wu said, "Since there is the venerable general, issue an edict immediately to bring them into the capital city and restore their former positions." Since Xiqi gained Huang Feihuo, weapons and warfare spread throughout the land, and armies of men and horses stirred up unrest. What will happen next? Let us continue to see. Stay tuned for the next chapter.
