Chapter 32
The poem says: Five Dao Xuan Gong is wondrous and immeasurable, transforming with the wind into qi to traverse the vast 沧茫 (cāng máng). In a moment it traverses all of Yanyu Shi; in an instant it roams leisurely across Taiyue Mang. To save one's father, how could one avoid toil and hardship? To punish slanderers, one fears not the fierce heart of a wolf. On the day when father and son meet at Tongguan Pass, they are all fine pillars of Qi Zhou.
It is said that Huang Tianhua borrowed the earth 遁 (dun) technique, suddenly arriving at Tongguan Pass. He descended from the dust, and it was just the fifth watch of the night. He saw a group of people on horseback surrounding an area, with a single lantern high above in the air. He also heard sad and sorrowful weeping sounds. Tianhua walked up to a group of people, and someone in the shadows asked, "Who are you? Have you come here to spy on military affairs?" Tianhua replied, "I am a cultivator of qi from Ziyang Dong on Qingfeng Mountain; I know that your great king is in trouble and have specially come to rescue him." Hasten and go report this." The family general, upon hearing these words, reported the news to Second Lord. Feibiao hurriedly rushed out of the camp gate and observed under the lantern light. He saw a young Daoist disciple who was indeed neatly dressed. How could this be described? The "Xijiang Yue" verse attests to it: His hair in a neat topknot shines brightly; his Dao robe with wide sleeves billows in the wind; The silk sash tied in an elegant knot resembles the dragon of Anli; on his feet are humble hemp shoes, yet they appear precious. Within the flower basket lies hidden mystery; on his back hangs a precious sword, its sharp edge ominous. Only when father and son meet at Tong Pass does it become clear that there is indeed a lineage of qilin.
It is said that Huang Feibiao came out to welcome and invite the young Daoist disciple, and upon seeing his manner and appearance, he seemed like Feihu. Feibiao quickly invited him inside for a meeting. After the young Daoist disciple entered the camp and met with all the generals, Feibiao asked, "Daozhe, if you can save my elder brother, you will truly be a second father and mother to me!" The young Daoist disciple said, "Where is General Huang?" Feibiao led the young Daoist disciple to see. They walked to the rear camp and saw Feihu lying on a felt mat, face up toward the sky, his body as pale as white paper, eyes closed and silent. Huang Tianhua looked at his father's yellowed face and sighed silently, "Father! Where is your name inscribed? Where lies your benefit?" You hold the position of a king, a first-rank official in court. For what reason have you come to such a wretched state!" Tianhua noticed that there was still one sleeping beside him and asked, "Who is the other person?" Feibiao said, "He is my sworn brother, also killed by Chen Tong's flying spear." Tianhua ordered, "Go down to the stream and fetch some water." In no time at all, the water arrived. Tianhua took out a divine medicine from the flower basket, ground it into paste with water, pried open the upper and lower teeth with his sword, poured it into the mouth, sent it to the middle yellow dantian, passed through three energy gates, penetrated all four limbs, and in an instant reached eight million four thousand hair pores; He also applied medicine to the injured eyes. After an hour, suddenly Huang Feihu cried out loudly, "It hurts me so much!" He opened his eyes and saw a young Daoist disciple sitting on the grass mat. Feihu said, "Is this not a meeting in the netherworld? How could there be such a divine child?" Feibiao said, "If it were not for the Daozhe, my elder brother would not have returned to life." After hearing this, Feihu immediately rose and bowed in gratitude, saying, "What good fortune for Feihu to now receive the Daozhang's compassion and be rescued back to life!" Huang Tianhua wept, kneeling on the ground and saying, "Father, I am not someone else; I am Huang Tianhua, your son who disappeared from the back garden when you were three years old." Feihu and the others, after hearing this, exclaimed in surprise, "It was originally our son Tianhua who came to save me! Unknowingly, it had already been thirteen more years." Feihu asked Tianhua, "My son, which famous mountain did you study the Dao on?" Tianhua wept and said, "I was at Ziyang Dong on Mount Qingfeng; My master is Qingxu Daode Zhenjun. Seeing that I was destined to leave the secular life, he took me up into the high mountains, and before I knew it, thirteen years had passed." Now I see my three brothers and also the two uncles," Zhou Ji was also saved, returning to his original nature. The whole family is reunited." Tianhua looked around before and after but did not see his mother, Jia Shi. Tianhua, being a saintly and divine figure with a fiery temper, suddenly turned red in the face. He stepped forward and said to Feihu, "Father, how cruel you are!" He gritted his teeth. Feihu said, "My son, now that we have met today, why do you suddenly say such words?" Tianhua said, "Father, since you have already rebelled against Chaoguo, you brought all your brothers along, yet my mother alone is not here. Why is that? She is a woman; if the imperial court were to arrest and question her, she would be exposed in public. How could General Wucheng maintain his dignity?" Feihu, upon hearing this, stamped his foot and wept bitterly, crying, "My son's words pierce my heart! Why did your father rebel?" It was because of your mother's New Year's Day court appearance to pay homage to Su Hou. Because the monarch insulted a minister's wife, your mother vowed to remain chaste and disgraced the king by leaping from Zhaixing Tower to her death. Your aunt spoke out directly on your mother's behalf, and was thrown down from the tower by King Zhou. She broke every bone in her body and died a tragic death. Now the pain is beyond words." Tianhua, after hearing this, let out a loud cry and died of grief on the spot. The crowd was thrown into panic, and when they urgently revived him, Tianhua wept with tears streaming down his face, crying as if in a daze. He shouted, "Father! I will no longer go to Mount Qingfeng to study the Dao; I shall march straight into Chaoguo and avenge my mother!" He was gnashing his teeth in rage when suddenly someone reported, "Chen Tong is outside requesting battle." Feihu heard the report and turned ashen-faced. Tianhua saw his father's panic and quickly wiped away his tears, saying, "Father, go out; your son is here. There will be no problem." Feihu had no choice but to mount his Five-colored Divine Bull, donned golden armor and a helmet, and stepped out of the camp. He called out, "Chen Tong, repay me for that spear strike from last night!" Chen Tong saw Feihu was perfectly fine.
He felt greatly suspicious but dared not ask, so he could only shout, "Traitor, come no closer!" Feihu said, "Foolish man! You struck me with your spear, yet you did not know that my lineage would never be extinguished in this world!" He urged his bull forward and brandished his lance straight at Chen Tong. Chen Tong quickly raised his halberd to parry the attack. The two riders clashed, engaging in fierce combat for fifteen rounds. Chen Tong turned his horse and fled. Feihu did not chase after him. Tianhua shouted, "Father, pursue this fool!" With your son here, what have you to fear?" Feihu had no choice but chase after him. Chen Tong, seeing Feihu in pursuit, launched a spear strike at him. Tianhua secretly aimed his flower basket at the fire dragon spear; all of Chen Tong's spears were drawn into the basket and vanished. Chen Tong, upon seeing his fire dragon spear taken away, became furious, reined in his horse, and returned to fight Feihu once more. A man behind shouted, "Chen Tong, you fool!" I am coming!" Chen Tong saw a young Daoist disciple aiding the battle and exclaimed, "Ah! It was you who took my divine spear and shattered my Dao techniques. How could I let this go!" He urged his horse forward, brandished his halberd, and charged at Tianhua. Tianhua quickly took the precious sword from his back into his hand and pointed it directly at Chen Tong. A streak of starlight, as large as a lantern's opening, shot from the tip of the sword and struck Chen Tong in the face; Chen Tong's head immediately fell to the ground beneath his horse. There is a poem that particularly praises the excellence of this precious sword. The poem says: Not copper, not iron, nor gold, it is the essence refined through countless trials from Qianyuan; its transformations are invisible and wondrous in use. One should know that it can kill as well as give life.
It is said that this sword of Tianhua was the mountain-sealing treasure of Qingxu Daode Zhen Jun, named "Moye Precious Sword." When its brilliance flashed forth, a head would immediately fall. Thus, Chen Tong met his fate upon encountering this sword. With Chen Tong dead, Huang Ming, Zhou Ji and the other generals shouted in unison, cut through the bindings and locks, scattered the soldiers, and exited Tongguan Pass. Huang Tianhua bid farewell to his father and returned to the mountains, bowing and saying, "Father and brothers, go slowly. Take care on your journey ahead!" Feihu said, "My son, why will you not travel with me?" Tianhua replied, "I dare not disobey my master's command." He must return to the mountain. Feihu could not bear to part with his son and sighed, "Why did our reunion come so late? Why must our separation be so soon! When will we meet again after this farewell?" Tianhua said, "We shall reunite soon in Xi Qi." Father and son, brothers wept as they parted.
Without mentioning Tianhua's return to the mountain, let us speak of Huang Feihu and his father having traveled more than eighty li away from Tongguan Pass and arriving not far from Chuanyun Guan. The commander defending Chuanyun Pass was Chen Wu, the elder brother of Chen Tong. The defeated soldiers had already reported the news. Upon hearing that Feihu had killed his brother, Chen Wu was so enraged that his three soul deities became furious and smoke arose from his seven orifices. He wanted to beat the drum, gather the generals, raise an army, and avenge his brother. One person in the inner ranks said, "Commander, you must not act rashly. Huang Feihu is a warrior whose bravery surpasses the entire army, and Zhou Ji and others are fierce generals like bears. The few cannot match the many; the weak cannot resist the strong. Second Lord is brave and mighty, yet he has already died in vain. In my humble opinion, we should capture them with wisdom." If we choose to fight directly, I fear we cannot win and may face unforeseen dangers." Chen Wu listened to the words of his subordinate general He Shen and said, "General He's words are reasonable, but what is your plan?" He Shen said, "We must... do it like this." Without drawing a single bow or arrow, we can eliminate the entire Huang family." Chen Wu was greatly pleased and carried out the plan accordingly. An order was issued: "If Huang Feihu arrives at the pass, you must report immediately." Not long after, a scout on horseback reported, "The Huang family's troops are coming!" Chen Wu gave orders: "Sound the gongs and drums. All generals, mount your horses and welcome General Huang Feihu, Duke of Wucheng." Feihu saw from his horse that Chen Wu led the generals toward him, neither wearing armor nor holding weapons. He bowed slightly on horseback and said, "Great King." Feihu also bowed slightly and said, "I, the unfortunate minister Huang Feihu, have committed crimes against the court and was cursed to leave the pass. Today I am honored by General's courteous treatment; my gratitude is as great as a mountain!" "Yesterday, I was again obstructed by your younger brother and thus caused casualties. If General pities my hardship, should I find a place to settle in the future, I will never forget this great kindness." Chen Wu replied from his horse, "Chen Wu knows that Your Majesty has for generations been loyal and virtuous, with a devoted heart to serve the country. Today it is the king who wronged his minister; what crime could there be?" "My younger brother Chen Tong, lacking discernment, resisted Your Majesty's passage and failed to recognize the times. He should have been punished according to law." "Your humble subordinate has prepared a simple meal. I humbly request Your Majesty to pause your imperial carriage for a moment and kindly accept the sincere offering of this lowly general; Chen Wu would be most grateful." Huang Ming sighed from his horse, "Even brothers born to the same mother differ in virtue and wisdom; even fruits on the same tree vary in sourness and sweetness. Viewed thus, General Chen far surpasses his brother!" Huang Feihu's generals heard Huang Ming's words and dismounted together. Chen Wu also dismounted and invited the Duke of Wucheng into his headquarters. The people exchanged courtesies, entered the hall to pay respects, and sat down in order. Chen Wu gave an order: "Bring out the meal." Feihu thanked, "Your humble minister is honored by General's generous gift; how could I possibly deserve it! This kindness and virtue—how can I ever repay even a fraction of it, no matter when?" After the meal, Feihu rose and thanked Chen Wu, saying, "If General would show mercy and compassion, I humbly beg you to open the pass so that this lowly life may pass through. On another day, when I repay your kindness, I will certainly not fail you." Chen Wu smiled and bowed slightly as he said, "Your humble subordinate knows that Your Majesty must be heading to Xi Qi to seek a wise ruler; should we meet again in the future, I shall then repay your kindness and offer my service." Today, I have but a cup of Lu wine; do not let it go to waste as an offering from this lowly subordinate. Your Majesty need not doubt me; there is no other intention." Huang Feihu said, "General's kind consideration—thinking of us both as military officers who have suffered injustice and escaped hardship. Your wisdom is evident. Since General has shown such generous affection, I dare not refuse." Chen Wu quickly gave orders: "Prepare the banquet and play music." The guests enjoyed each other's company, unaware that the sun had already set in the west. Huang Feihu rose to take his leave, saying, "I am deeply honored by your generous hospitality; your kindness is as great as Mount Tai. Should I ever achieve even the slightest progress, I will never forget today's virtue." Chen Wu said, "Your Majesty may rest assured. Your humble subordinate knows that on Your Majesty's journey here, you have not had a moment of rest. Tired from riding all day and the sky is already dark; I humbly offer lodging for one night in a simple bedchamber, and we may depart early tomorrow. I assure you there are no ill intentions." Feihu thought to himself: "Though it is well-intentioned; this place is not suitable for lodging." He also saw Huang Ming say, "Elder brother! General Chen has shown great kindness; there is no harm in leaving tomorrow." Huang Feihu had no choice but to reluctantly agree. Chen Wu was overjoyed. Wu said, "Your humble subordinate shall prepare
to share a few more cups." I fear Your Majesty has been weary for many days and dare not urge you further. Your Majesty, please rest for a while; your humble subordinate will take my leave." I shall offer more wine in the morning." Feihu expressed deep gratitude, saw Chen Wu out of the headquarters, and ordered his men to push the carriages into the courtyard under the eaves and stack them up. The household generals lit painted candles, and everyone retired for rest. All had been weary from the journey, traveling hard and laboring tirelessly; one by one they slept soundly like thunder, each snoring loudly. Huang Feihu sat in the hall, thinking back and forth, his mind burdened with worries. He let out a long sigh and lamented, "Heaven! My Huang family has been seven generations of ministers to the Shang dynasty. Who could have known that today we would become fugitives in disgrace!" My single-minded loyalty can only be witnessed by Heaven itself! It is the tyrant king who has wronged and killed my wife, which fills me with deep hatred. He even caused the death of my sister—this cuts to my very bones and breaks my heart! O Heaven! If Duke of Wucheng would but accept our request for troops, we shall surely punish the tyrant!" Feihu clenched his teeth and composed a poem: Seven generations of loyal virtue have turned to painted cakes; who could know that today I would enter Xi Qi. Five passes on the road truly mark my misfortune; three battles without a king—how can such thoughts be in vain? A bird that loses its forest has already lost its home; relying on others for favor, my mind is filled with doubts. If an old man like me could fulfill his lifelong ambition, I would wash away all the strange events of the past.
As Huang Feihu finished composing the poem, he heard one beat from the drum tower. Sitting alone and bored, before long it was already two o'clock in the night. Thinking to himself, "The royal palace is magnificent, with elegant study halls and embroidered pavilions filled with treasures—how luxurious! Who could have known that I would now find myself without a place to stand." Hearing the third drumbeat, Feihu said, "Why can I not sleep tonight!" His heart grew restless and he broke out in a sudden sweat. Suddenly, he heard the sound of a gust of wind from beneath the danchi. How was this wind so wondrous? The poem says: Formless and shadowless, it startles with its coldness; extinguishing candles and piercing through curtains, it is heartlessly fierce. It sends white clouds flying into the distance, and gently cuts down yellow leaves to fall. It hastens sudden rain, aids boat travel, yet stirs sorrowful thoughts and deep resentment in the heart. Suddenly adding boundless tears of grief, they fall onto the steps like the sound of rain.
As for Huang Feihu, he was sitting in the hall when at three o'clock at night, he suddenly heard a gust of wind swirling from beneath the danchi all the way to the east side of the hall. Feihu saw this and was so startled that his hair stood on end, breaking out in a cold sweat. From where the whirlwind opened, a hand stretched out and extinguished the candlelight. Then came a voice calling, "General Huang, I am no demon or monster. I am your first wife, Jia Shi, who has followed you here." A great calamity is upon you now!" Right now, fierce flames are coming to destroy everything. Quickly wake up your uncle!" General, please take good care of my three motherless children. Hurry up!" I am going now!" Feihu suddenly awoke from the shock, and to his surprise, the lamp light returned as before. Feihu slammed the table in alarm and shouted, "Wake up quickly! You too!" Only then did he see Huang Ming, Zhou Ji and others, who were still in deep sleep. Hearing the shout, they hurriedly got up and asked, "Elder brother, why are you shouting so loudly?" Feihu recounted to them what had happened when the lamp was extinguished and he heard Jia Shi's words. Feibiao said, "Better believe it exists than assume it does not." As Huang Ming hurried to the front gate to open it, he found that the door was locked from the outside. Huang Ming cried out, "Something is wrong!" Long Huan and Wu Qian chopped through with axes. They saw that the front of the headquarters was piled high with firewood, tightly packed like a wooden barrier blocking the way. Long Huan and Zhou Ji hurriedly called out to their household generals and pushed the carriages outside. The generals mounted their horses and had just exited the headquarters when they saw Chen Wu leading his troops with torches, rushing toward them in a swarm—but it was already too late. It seems to be the will of Heaven, not something that can be controlled by human effort. A scout reported to Chen Wu: "Huang Feihu's men have exited the headquarters, and their carriages are outside." Chen Wu was furious and shouted to his generals: "You came too late! Quickly, ride forward!" Huang Feihu said, "Chen Wu, your generous hospitality yesterday has turned to flowing water. What grudge or hatred do I have against you that you would act so unkindly?" Chen Wu, realizing his plan had been uncovered, cursed loudly: "Rebel!" "I truly hoped to uproot you completely and eradicate your entire Huang clan lineage." Who knew that you, a cunning scoundrel, would ultimately manage to survive through deceit. "Although things have turned out this way, I know you will not escape the heavenly net and earthly snare!" He urged his horse forward, brandishing his spear to attack Huang Ming. Huang Ming met the attack with his axe in hand. In the darkness of night, their forces clashed and engaged in a chaotic battle. Huang Feihu urged on his five-colored divine ox and raised his spear to fight Chen Wu as well. Chen Wu parried with sword and axe, fending off spears and halberds. After fighting for only a few exchanges, Huang Feihu became furious, roared out loud, and with one powerful thrust, pierced through Chen Wu's chest, throwing him from his horse. The two sides clashed so fiercely that the people within the pass cried out in agony; it was a battle that shook heaven and earth, causing both ghosts to weep and gods to grieve. At that time, they cut through the bolts and locks and fought their way out of Chuanyun Pass. By then it was already daylight; they made preparations to head toward Jiepai Pass. Huang Ming said from his horse, "We need not kill any more." "The pass ahead is guarded by Lord Tai; it belongs to our own family." They hurriedly urged the carriages forward, covering more than eighty li. Soon they could see that they were not far from the pass.

Meanwhile, Huang Gun of Jiepai Pass was Huang Feihu's father and had been stationed there to guard it. Upon hearing the report that his eldest son, Huang Feihu, had rebelled against Chaoguo and killed the commanders guarding the passes along the way, he was greatly alarmed. Huang Gun was deeply troubled in his heart. A scout soldier reported, "My lord, the second and third masters have arrived." Huang Gun quickly gave orders: "Send out three thousand troops and form an array; seize ten prison wagons, capture this rebel leader, and deliver him to Chaoguo!" What will become of the lives of Huang Feihu's generals? We shall hear in the next chapter.
